Did anyone give up on their budget?

UnionJackDream, 9 June, 2012 at 19:18 Posted on Planning 0 17

We have a "strict" budget of £7000 We have been really good and sticking to our budget really well. We went slightly over on the venue but saved money on other items.
Recently I have thought why... why am I sticking to this! I am marrying the man of my dreams and I want this to be a day to remember. I was always going to do my own make up and stuff but now I think STUFF IT !! I want to have the most perfect day so I have decided to (not go crazy) but not stop on blowing out on a few things. I have decided to get a make up artist in and spend some extras on bits we were going to save on.

Life is too short! Did anyone else do this or have you been strict?

xxxx

Sadly for my savings account, this is all too regularly my attitude to spending money! So long as I don't get myself into any debt, I am partial to treating myself every so often (or every few weeks...or few days...?)

We dont really have a budget as such, we are just trying to get things as cheap as possible...

I did come up with a budget of 16K when I first started researching but I think we will actually be spending less which is always a bonus.

We've gone over on things! We're about £500 over but this depends a lot on whether everyone we invited will come, bcos for every person who doesn't come we save £50!

But I too wasn't going to have a MUA and I'm now having one! Not sure where other over spends have accrued specifically! Mostly on my beauty, nails, teeth whitening, hair dying all things I thought I could pay for alone but have now tagged on to the wedding budget!

We had an amount in our heads (£10k) that we were comfortable with spending.

Although the most important day of my life... it is still just that, one day.

We could have easily have spent £25k but then would have ended up in debt, which is no way to start married life.

I absolutely agree Mrs C - I am expecting the post wedding blues; these would be pretty unbearable if I also had to keep saving to pay off a big debt; it's been boring enough saving for the last year!

We have gone over our origingal budget but in hindsight when making the budget we were a little naive about how much the things we really wanted cost AND we fell for the most expensive venue we looked at (typical) but we can afford it, just about and won't be going into debt for the wedding although things are very stretched at the moment, its only a few months and then we'll have a little more disposable income to play with and have had the wedding we both wanted.

Mrs C I agree, I am not on about spending loads more maybe a grand max. I am really strict on money in our day to day life so I wouldn't go crazy (never had an overdraft or loan or credit card)

Luckily I've ended up having a very small wedding so will probably be about £2000 under my original budget which took in to account more guests, but I think it's a matter of saving money on the things that aren't really important to you and spending more on the things that are. There's no point depriving yourself of something that's important to you (within reason, I also don't think it's worth getting in to debt) but I've also tried to look for bargains as much as I can.

We didn't have a budget, but wanted to make sure we could have a wedding we could afford, without having to get a loan. I seemed to have done most the savings while my h2b keeps adding stuff on.

Was kind of hoping parents would contribute but no word off either side as yet.

Yes its only one day, but its the only one we will get.

We're a bit over budget because I forgot to include things like make up and hair dressing on to the budget. I also am having additions made to my dress which is costing £90 on top of the alterations.

I got like this, except I ended up paying double on the make-up anyway, having bought a load to do my own, decided I wasn't up to the job and had a (cheap) MUA anyway :/ She did do a fab job and I'm glad I went for it in the end.

Cheapo DIYing absolutely everything is exhausting and stressful so is not good for a serene, fresh-faced bridal look.

Yea we have set a budget for 'essential items' everything else will be the best we can afford at the time without getting into debt so will be splashing out on designer shoes etc I know it's only for 1 day but I don't want to look back at the wedding with any regrets.

The venue has been the biggest part of the budget and extras on top (tog, bar staff, evening buffet, musician, DJ, florists, legal stuff) working out to about 4k.

I asked my Mum and Dad yesterday if I had a budget for my dress and they just said to 'go with my heart', which was nice but I really don't want to take advantage.

They've given me some good ideas, they're paying for the wedding out of bonds and child benefits that they saved up for me from being born and this is definitely what I'll be doing, but I plan on contributing about a quarter of the costs, possibly paying for the supplier stuff.

I won't be having a MUA, one of my bridesmaids is a hair dresser so this has helped a bit!
