Diet not working

DaisyBoyd24, 17 July, 2010 at 10:52 Posted on Beauty & Wellbeing 0 3

Hi I wondered if someone could give me some advise please?

My husband and I have been doing a calorie counting diet for the last 3 weeks.

I'm sticking to 1400 calories a day and my husband around this too.

I have lost 6lbs in this time and have another 8 or so pounds to go.

Dispite being far more active than me my husband has only lost 4lbs and still needs to loose about another 35lbs.

I can't understand why he is not loosing much as normally when you start a diet you have quite a big drop to start with?!

Any suggestions?

He is doing a 2.5 mile bike ride nearly every day and walking the dog about a mile.

For breakfast he has fruit and fibre (around 250 cals)

lunch - crackers, cottage cheese, salad or bagel, salad (around 500 cals)

Tea - chicken or fish, boiled new potatoes, steamed veg or checken, noodles & veg (around 600)

and fruit to snack on.

Any ideas of what he can do to kick start this weight loss?

Many thanks,

Daisy

Has he only just started taking that much exercise? If he has it could be that he's building muscle more efficiently than you are (men tend to be better at that) and so for every pound of fat he's losing he's putting on maybe half a pound in muscle. Alternatively, it could just be that his body is taking a bit of time to adjust to the new diet - 4lbs in three weeks is fairly acceptable and sometimes it takes a while for your body to "get" weight loss - I stayed the same for a while and then it just fell off me rapidly after a month or two. Give it time, if he's got 35lbs to lose you don't want to do that too quickly or it'll just pile back on again as soon as you revert to a normal diet.

Its not about the diet and the exercise. Maybe try a little bit yoga and mind exercise.

It is a good chance that it is as AlmostMrsP says. I remember I was quite chubby last year so went on a diet myself. While I slimmed down a lot I did not lose that much weight. Muscle weighs more than fat so there is a good chance that he is putting that on instead. The thing to remember is 'weight' isn't the issue, it is the size of the body. Best example is a kick boxer I know. He is only 5ft 2 but weights almost 11 stone ... he doesn't have an once of fat on him. While your husband is doing this, do measurements as well then you can see how he really is progressing.

I'm not trying to be mean, but is he really sticking to the diet? I have a friend who swears to his wife he's following the rules, but sneaks off down the corner shop at linchtime for a cornish pastie. If he is sticking to it I apologise, but men are notorious for 'cheating' on diets.

What is he drinking? If he's having 7 cups of coffee with 2 sugars each that will have to be added to the daily calorie count. You also have to consider the types of food - carbs, protein, fibre and fat, and the fact that it may take his digestive system a few weeks to adjust to a new eating regime. High fibre diets are notorious for making you gain weight in the first week or 2. You could try measuring his waist instead - sometimes a better judge with men - my OH lost a stone and ground to a halt in the weight loss, but is still losing inches, it's probably the muscle vs fat thing.

There may also be an issue if he's not eating enough - men are supposed to need 2500 calories a day so 1400 on a diet may send his body into startvation mode. Men are supposed to go for **** on a diet.

How long have you got though? 40lbs is a lot to lose, it will take a minimum of 6 months at a steady 1 or 2 lbs a week.

You might try a detox plan for a week, help eliminate water-retaining toxins and see if that helps.
