Do you bring work stress home?

pandorasbox, 21 September, 2012 at 18:24 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

I admit I do sometimes do this, and sometimes snap at OH when really it isn't anything to do with him. But it has to have been a totally dire day for me to feel stressed.

He on the other hand, can have the worst day ever, but most of the time manages to be sweetness and light when he gets home. It's like he can just switch it off.

Generally no...although currently working a lot from home (in addition to my full time job) so cant help bringing work home.

That said I used to work in hotels/hospitality and nothing really seems that stressful in comparison.

Not usually. I like to forget about it as soon as I'm done. OH, on the other hand, is a complete stress head and can never let things go. It keeps him in a bad mood until I find some way to snap him out of it.

All the time! That's normal isn't it? I have a stressful job and I can't always leave it at the office.

It's normal for me. It can be different types though-the worst is when there are lots of bad issues to deal with that gives a sense of dead for going in the next day (fortunately rarely) = negative stress.. A lot of the time, it is through being busy-but for me that gives me the drive, and generates lots more ideas (quite often in the shower!) = positive stress.

    Does that make sense?

Much less in my current job. When I was working in medicine/ITU I would worry about patients I had seen, and sometimes call back to the ward/the on-call doctor to get them to check something.

Now I'm in anaesthetics, most of the bad stuff that could happen is going to happen while I'm still there, so I don't have to worry too much about what happens after I've woken them up and gone home.

Yes, as a nurse I find it's hard not to. If its been a bad day, it's been busy, we've had rude families or frustrating phone calls with doctors or managers, or worse one of the children has crashed and it leaves you with a horrible adrenaline rush. Luckily my H also works in a hospital so he understands everything when I offload. It's not unknown when you're on a night shift for someone to phone in saying they've forgotten to handover something. It can be hard to switch off.

My work doesn't have a direct impact on individuals (in Finance). I can imagine that it would be hard to switch off/'forget' about them.

Forgot to say - I can rarely talk to OH about work because he is so squeamish. I have some fab friends who I can offload to when I see them, but I always feel like I have to tread on eggshells talking to OH if there's anything remotely "icky" involved.

I don't really bring stress home but If a 'service user' is ill, I worry, but it just makes me a bit quiet. Also OH helps when people I've been visiting for a long time die, it's impossible to not be upset.

I do my absolute best to switch off as soon as I leave work, and I'm much better at it than I used to be. It's not easy though when something bad happens. A patient had a fall on Monday when I was with her (first time it's ever happened to me) and I still feel guilty about it now.

Kind of glad it's not just me.

I do totally but try not to. Didn't realise what a miserable *** I was being really until I stepped out of a situation. Had a torrid time at work with a bullying boss, and finally got up the courage to complain and then circumstances were that she left. Those 8 months or so she wa s there made me miserable and anxious and feel sad I inflicted this on my lovely OH

I've generally de-stressed by the time he gets home as I get in 30 mins to 3 hours earlier than he does (depending on his shift and when I leave work). Unless it's 'weeks' like this one where I've done 12 long days in a row, but that's more tiredness.

I try not to let it bother me, although some things stay with me and can often go round in my head for a bit. If I am bothered by it then I can be a bit snappy towards oh - poor thing!

If I've taught a particularly difficult class that day it will play on my mind for a few hours. When on placement (and in a permanent job if I ever get one) it's hard not to bring work stress home because of the amount of planning/marking that needs to be done at home.

I try not to but when I've had a long stressful day of moaning customers and getting in at gone midnight I generally tend to be tired and grumpy. Throw in some pregnancy hormones and it's not always easy to be in a good mood.
