Do you carry ID?

Melancholie, 24 May, 2009 at 14:10 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 32

I was asked for ID last night and didn't have any so wasn't allowed into the pub. In my whole life I've only ever been asked for ID three times, and two of those have been in the last month! I'm almost 29, there's no way I look under 18. I don't routinely carry ID on a night out; at my age, I don't feel like I should have to! It made me wonder how many people actually do routinely carry ID. So, how old are you and do you take ID with you when you go out for a few drinks?

Last time I was asked for ID I was 27 but I was in a line behind a load of 18 yr olds so I think he was just asking everyone without actually looking up. To answer the question though yes I do, not intentionally but I always keep my driving license in my purse so by default I do always have ID with me.

I would be quite happy to be asked for id and turned away ha ha - but it never happens Smiley winking I don't carry id on a night out. I carry as little as possible as I am a nightmare for losing things after a few beverages. I do my driving license in my wallet not for age identification (I'm 32)just incase I need to show id i.e. post office/police.

I'm 25, I've never been IDd - though I don't really 'do' clubs (prematurely middle aged!).

I do carry my driving license in my purse but not specifically for ID.

No, no matter how drunk I get, I always remember who I am.

If you're being ID'ed in your late 20's there's probably a reason other than age. That or the bar/club is 25+ or some such.

I do all the time now. They routinely card anyone under about 40 here. One specific bar I go only accept "local" ID so I have to take my passport for that one.

I was ID'ed a couple of months ago. My joy at being thought so young was swiftly runined when I was told it was Sommerfield's policy to ID everyone buying alcohol.

I always have my driving licence on me but not specificaly for ID.

This wasn't a club. I haven't been to a club in years! It was just a bar in Clapham Common. We drank in three other places, one before and two after, and I wasn't asked for ID in any of those. I do carry my driving license on a day to day basis, but not when I go out. I don't take my regular handbag and purse when I go out as they're too big!

    Nick, what reason?

Nope, I don't carry ID with me at all and I'm 32. Sadly I haven't been asked for ID since I was 19 ?

Fairy nuff. Don't remember ever being IDd in a pub, I don't even go to bars, I'm not nearly cool enough ??

I guess a bar on a Saturday night in somewhere fairly busy like Clapham/Wimbledon might routinely ID people?

    PS Think Nick's saying you're a bit of a chav ?

I always have my driving license on me because if you get pulled over here and you don't have it, you'll be fined.

Some places have a policy of IDing everyone.

    I don't go to them ?

I haven't been ID'd in a pub for ages, though do carry ID with me as I drink with some young looking 28 year olds.

I've been ID'd recently in supermarkets, or they make a point of looking at me as they scan the booze through. Once I was refused a bottle of cider (a pint bottle of nice cider, not super strong stuff) in with the rest of my shopping in Sainsburys. Unfortunately I'd sent my drivers license away cos I'd moved house. The cashier 'could not be sure' I was telling the truth when I said I was 28 ? I was not amused!

I always carry ID if I'm going anywhere that may involve alcohol even though I'm 27. I get ID'ed in the supermarket if I buy wine with the shopping and have been ID'ed the last twice I was in pubs (1 with an over 21's policy and 1 with an over 25's policy).

It used to bother me when I was younger as I couldn't buy a scratchcard without ID until I was 20, never mind anything else, but now (as I was promised by my young-looking Mum) I'm actually quite pleased when it happens.

I'd love to know what those reasons are as I keep being asked for ID when buying lottery tickets - I'm 28 ?

Yes! I am only 20 though! I get IDed for everything! Recently i nipped into morrisons with my housemate also 20 to buy a bottle of wine. She didnt bring her purse as i was buying. Even though i had my id and i was paying on my card with my name on it she wouldn't serve me with my friend there! It's rediculous! If i had a child with me i could buy the booze! GRRRRR!!! I walked out and left the whole trolley load backed up on the belt! x

Since driving licenses went card-based instead being stupid big bits of paper I carry mine with me all the time. I've been id'd since I turned 30, but only in the supermarket, and generally by a cashier who's been younger looking than me. It's fair enough, they are the ones who get it in the neck if they serve someone underage

I never have ID on me, ever.

I've only been turned away once from a place re: an ID issue, when a bar was asking every third or fourth person for it. Ironically, my older, teacher, very sensible sister got refused entry for not having it, whilst me (the younger sister) swept through without a second nod.

I dont' usually carry ID on a night out and I've never been asked, even when I was out at 16. I have been ID'd once in the supermarket though and had to leave my bottle of wine behind ? Because of moving and sorting stuff at the post office I've actually got my passport in my purse atm.

I worked in a pub up till a few weeks ago and we ID'd people quite a lot, even if they'd been ID'd at the door by the doormen as it's our jobs on the line. The tills had the date in huge writing on the till of what their birthdate would have to be to be over 18 on that day.

A couple came in once in the evening and only he had ID, when I asked her she pulled out her car keys and said she was driving ? She might not be drinking but she couldn't stay in the pub if she didn't have ID!

I'm always a bit snooked when it comes to ID - I'm 33 and have been asked for ID (although on all occasions an outraged "I'm 33!!!" has worked) I don't have a driving licence - no medical reason, just public safety (you would thank me for this!), so have no easy photo ID other than my passport.

I carry my driving license in my purse so as long as I have my main purse with me (i.e. haven't put everything in a small purse to go out with and forgotten to put the license in there as well) then yes, I have ID.

Sadly I haven't been asked for it in years?

I am in my late twenties and always take my driving licence with me as I am paranoid about getting asked for ID. Got asked in Tesco last week when buying sake (and I wouldn't say I look particulary young). I think a lot of places have a policy that if you look under 25 they ID you now.

I'd like to know what Nick meant too. I'm 34 and got asked for ID at the supermarket buying wine the day before yesterday. I quite often get asked in supermarkets, especially if I'm on my own, so now tend to carry some form of ID with me. It's not like I'm buying a bottle of White Lightning either - it will usually be a bottle of mid-price wine to go with the rest of the dinner ingredients.

I usually have my driving licence with me despite not owning a car as I've been ID'd a few times going into bars and things in central London where they were checking everyone regardless of how old they looked. I often get asked how old I am when I buy cigarrettes in our local Tesco (I'm 27) and have to stop and think about it and then get quite objectionable because I've been asked my age rather than what year what I born/to show ID.

I've only been ID'd once and that was buying Scary Movie on DVD for my brother's birthday present!

I always carry some ID on me but not out of a conscious effort! I don't drink alcohol and rarely go to pubs/clubs etc but if I do I'm usually driving there so I have my driving licence in my purse with me at all times Even if I'm not driving and I've got a smaller bag with me I always take my debit card and my driving licence with me along with money and keys.

I take my driving licence. Saves any hassle then. I just bung it in my handbag with my debit card if I'm going out.

I tend to get asked more in shops than pubs or clubs. I'm 32.

I always carry my driving licence no matter where I am. It's just easier than not carrying it IYSWIM. And yes, I got ID'd twice last year. I'll be 37 in a couple of week's time ?

    Love it!

The young boy who I'd me in M&S buying Buck's Fizz the other week said "Oh blimey" and went red when he saw how old I was on my licence ?

    Aw, bless him ?

My conversation with the doorman at the pub went:

Him: 'Right, I'll need to see some ID. How old are you?'

Me: 'I bet I'm older than you are.'

Him: (looking like I was taking the p*ss out of him), 'Come on, ID please'

Me: 'Well, don't say I didn't tell you so...' (handing over ID).

Him (looking embarrassed): 'Oh. Actually you are, yeah. Erm, sorry about that.'

    ?

I'm 29 and last time I was ID'ed it was trying to get into a bar in Clapham Common on bank holiday weekend! I had no ID, and after only having my birthday the week before and spending all day at 'Loaded in the Park' festival I couldn't actually remember how old I was! Still let me in though after I showed the bouncer all the wrinkles round my eyes!!

I very rarely carry ID as I've yet to get round to sending off for my driving licence since I lost it, and one of the joys of being married is that I very rarely need to carry my wallet - usually H takes his and I just take some cash in my pocket.
