Do you let your pets sleep on your bed?

smilesjp, 2 June, 2014 at 16:32 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 37

We recently got an adorable 10 week old kitten who I just adore, however, our previous cat never showed any interest in sleeping on our bed, but this one does and will cry and claw at the door until she's all snuggled up with us, which is fine, but we nearly had a close call of accidentally squashing her, she's so tiny. OH is a very light sleeper as it is and would prefer it if she slept elsewhere, especially when she decides that it's play time at 3.00am and sits (and farts) on your face.

Any suggestions as to what we should do? Should we just buckle up and leave it? It's been two weeks, we thought it was because she missed her mum but she's settled in perfectly. We've tried making her bed as comfortable as possible, even got her a hot water bottle covered in our clothes!

We adopted our cat a couple of years ago, he used his bed for a bit then gradually started snuggling into bed with us or my mum when it was really cold. Now we don't have a choice, he sleeps in with my mum mostly but occasionally us too. He likes to lie right between us or curl up on us. He lies in bed all day too. He's a spoilt little beggar.

We never used to let our cats sleep on the bed but it kind of happened over time. We do have a seperate 'cat blanket' by our feet that they use so that our bed isn't covered in too much fur. We have tried shutting them out but we have a sliding door that they bang repeatedly until we give in. Its nice in the winter when they warm the bed, although that there has been the occasional case of them being kicked out by accident Smiley atonished

We had just moved in and decorated when we got our cats. the rule not allowed in the bedroom at all. the reality, the wallpaper is clawed, the bedsheets are covered in cat hair, nightly wake ups when a sock becomes an intersting thing to play with. Why dont we lock them out, because they claw and cry at the door until you let them in. Lock them in another room? Same problem.

I do quite like having them in bed with me tho, they are like warm teddys! I like how one of my cats smells when hes sleeping, odd I know.

It is personal choice I think. My cats have got 3 gyms, a wicker basket two story cat bed, huge knitted blankets, my sofa, a radiator bed etc but they still sleep in bed with us every night.

When OH and I want 'alone time' we literally have to force them into the lounge and shut the door or they spend the entire time clawing at our bedroom door howling. Huge distraction...

I have always allowed cats on the bed and even in the bed! My old cat used to get in with me every night and my new kitten will sometimes get right under the covers but he is usually cuddled up to one of us. The first night he came home he slept under my chin all night.

As he is a Siamese he craves company so without a friend I would feel awful not letting him sleep with us, especially when we have been at work all day. If he had a friend and I didnt want them on the bed I would just have to be firm and give them a room and leave them in it.

Your kitten will have been lonely so she came to you for comfort. Now she has decided she likes it so she will cry to get in your room.

If you desperately do not want her in the bed you need to start now and mean it. Tire her out before bed and give her a meal of wet food afterwards with a cuddly toy and even a heat pad maybe in an igloo (my kitten loves his igloo). She should hopefully be so tired she will fall asleep and eventually get used to sleeping on her own. You do have to ignore the crying which is incredibly hard!!

Our other two cats are so much different, they rarely seek out human company and even when they were locked in at night they did not sleep with us. They are far too independent whereas the Siamese is a lot more dependent. When we get home he races to greet us just for cuddles!!!

I can't leave my door shut without the dog being in my room, she scratches the door pretty badly, she loves being close to someone - even follows me to the toilet haha!

CAVEAT - NOT A CAT PERSON

I wouldn't be able to tolerate the hair in/on the bed. Although I like dogs this would be the same for them too.

Growing up we had cats and dogs and they never slept upstairs let alone on our beds, it's just not something I could even entertain!

I never used to but i am letting all of them sleep with us more and more. Last night harrycat woke me up with his loud snoring, then bellabamba decided to snuggle up next to me with her furry sweaty little body. Ugh.

My main issue with cats in the bed is that is cancels out any chance of boffing. In afraid I can't get jiggy with a cat on the bed, or even in the rom for that matter. Audiences aren't my thing.

My cats don't ever wake us up in the night. They usually find their spot and are still there in the morning and don't wake up until our alarm goes off Smiley smile

In our house it is more that the cat allows me to share the double bed with him as opposed to me letting him sleep with me. He tells me off if I move too much in the night - I get growled at and have been slapped on occasions? Although when he is being affectionate he gently strokes my face - if I lay still and don't fidget.

But I grew up with cats being allowed everywhere as opposed to having heating in the house.

I couldn't do it with a dog though! Also love the smell of a warm cats body but a dogs smell makes me want to vomit.

Same! I think if we had a dog I would definitely lock it out of the bedroom at night.

Our cat's bed is in our bedroom and she often jumps up on the bed to see us but fortunately she doesn't stay long. I'm a restless sleeper so I would probably end up launching her off the bed by accident if she tried to sleep with us.

She has a habit of pawing and then clawing to wake us up when she wants food or fuss so I am glad that she sleeps elsewhere!

Is anyone else watching the Secret Life of Cats? Those kittens are beautiful.... I want one!

    Ugh this!

I get woken up at 5-6am every day by him pawing my face or standing on me. He also hates getting moved when I make the bed.

We do if they want to, it's not a nightly thing but they all stay quiet and don't make a fuss so it doesn't keep us awake or anything. They also sleep at the end of the bed so aren't in the way either.

If it's really bothering you though just shut her in a room somewhere (far away if she's being loud and keeping your OH awake!) and eventually she will understand.

When I was little we had cats who weren't allowed in the dining room let alone upstairs but now I've got Chip I am much soppier.

He sleeps in his crate downstairs as I didn't want him to grow up thinking it was normal to sleep in the bed but very occasionally he sleeps with us. For such a small dog he manages to take up so much space though and has to sleep under the duvet or he isn't happy so I don't get a particularly good nights sleep because I'm worried about smothering him.

I couldn't do it every night though. I can't get naughty with him in the room!

That rat bed is so sweet!

She has a crate in the bedroom, which she'll go into when we go to bed. The door is open and she sometimes sleeps in there all night, or for for a short time then comes up and lies on the bottom of the bed. In the morning she comes up and her turning round to get herself in position under duvet with head on pillow usually wakes me up. She also has a habit to wanting to sleep with her head resting on your face which isn't the most comfortable.

We're a pack of three, and don't mind her sleeping in the bed at all. My mum on the other hand thinks it's vile. Before she goes on her holidays we'll need to have a few weeks of full closed door crate nights to get her used to it!

Generally only one of them sleeps on my bed. I don't know where else the sleep though. Joey likes to get in the covers when it's cold and he spoons me. Weirdo.

It sounds like our house! Mr Erin hates having them in the bedroom but l love it. We compromise by letting them sleep in our room on nights we don't have big things on the next day. Mr Erin claims they wake him up deliberately but he is a paranoid weirdo! Mimi likes the bed but Rudy prefers the floor.

I love the small of warm sleep cat!

    Loving the rat bed.

I have two. One sleeps in the spare room on the guest bed and the other, well she is always in with us. Either on the wardrobe, on the end of the bed or she'll come under the covers.

This is completely my fault because I encouraged it when she was little - she's ten now - so it's just a bad habit really. But back then it was nice to have something to cuddle in bed!

Thankfully she doesn't take up too much room and when I met OH he initially was like "NO! She is not doing that any more!" but he's softened to it and she just comes under whenever she wants. If I try to shoo her away she nudges me until I give in.

Don't blame the cat, blame the owner! lol

My cat was like that too and there were times I could have sent him back such as when he got between the duvet and sheets so we couldn't get him out! He sleeps on our bed even now (3years later) but his as good as gold and sometimes prefers the windowsill. I never really had pets in my room before but like I said his no hassle and now his older he doesn't moan if we shut him out just sleeps elsewhere x

We've got 3 cats - they sleep wherever. They have lots of beds they rotate around, and they tend to sleep on the spare bed (with it's own cat covers so we can change it when we have guests).

We tried to keep them out but they scratch and Sophia shouts her head off to come in so it's just easier. They occasionally sleep on the bed (sometimes all at once) but more often than not don't bother. Amelia will climb under the covers when it's cold, and she'll poke me to get in if she can't get the cover up.
