Do you remember books you've read?

ebee, 12 December, 2008 at 16:09 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

I love books, and used to be a prolific reader until the children arrived, but it's occured to me that I very rarely remember a book once I've finished it even if I enjoyed it. Does that mean the books I read are rubbish?

it was prompted by reading an interview with Kate Winslet about her new film, The Reader... I've read the book and think I enjoyed t, but only vaguely remembered bits of the plot and certainly couldn't have told you what it was about if I hadn't just read the synopsis.

Do I just have a terrible memory or is that normal? There are a handful of books I remember in detail but I must have read hundreds and hundreds ?

I remember some books but not others. There are some which I've forgotten I've read, but if I ever pick them up again and start reading, I can't finish them as it's all too familiar.

I'm just re-reading a series of books which I've read once before, and can't remember much of at all. That might mean they're crap, but I don't care as I just want something I can read a chapter of here and there without getting absorbed in the story and ending up late for work!

I read a lot but I rarely remember much of them. I do remember some characters and some plots (or bits of them) but sometimes not even that. I reread books a lot as it can all be new to me second/third time around ?. I enjoy them at the time of reading but they don't seem to sink in. It might not be common but your not the only one.

H seems to remember the details of books (and films) so much more than I do.

I don't remember the details of every book I've read. The ones I've identified with, or were more unusual I tend to remember. H is reading Anna Karenina, which I read years ago, and is constantly surprised that I don't remember it.

Yes, I have an excellent memory. It only takes a few mins thinking about a particular book - once I've gotten one bit (character/plot/cover/whatever) the rest comes back.

I still reread my favourites all the time though ?

I'm glad I'm not the only one ? seraphina I've actually re-read a book without realising till I was half-way through, and for the life of me now I still can't remember what it was called or what it was about ?

It's a standing joke with H that I never remember books - not only once I've finished them but also whilst i'm reading them. If someone asked me what book I'm reading at the moment or what it's about I'd have no clue, and yet I read for at least 30 mins every night.

I don't necessarily remember a book by its title or cover, but I tend to remember the story and characters of most books I've read except maybe trashy holiday books.

I still love to re-read books though, its can be good just to appreciate the writing and story-telling ability when you already know the plot.

I very rarely read books again as i do remember the plot quite well and it sort of spoils the enjoyment, I tend to have the same problem with films, unless they are exceptionally good i'm not keen on watching them again and again.

I reread books all the time and remember the majority of them pretty well.

I've seen myself rereading a book and thinking "such and such is sill to happen, how are they going to fit it in??" lol.

The problem I find is that I read too quickly. With books read in school over a term, then, yes, I remember. When it comes to reading for pleasure, I tend to forget most of the books after the last page. Probably because they're pulp. I probably remember only one book per year. The Time Travellers Wife I remember because hitched prompted me to read it, I had to order (and wait for) it from the mobile library and I read it over a two week period.

Bill Brysons Thunderbolt Kid I remember as its the most recent.

I remember laughing like a drain at Foetal Attraction - which made me a life-long Kathy Lette fan - ditto Marian Keyes.

The books I really remember are:

Most of Enid Blyton, esp,. The Naughtiest Girl series

Lynne Reid Banks' 'One More River'. Of all the books I've read, this childrens book has been the most profound - the Arab-Israeli Conflict. But Mohammad may as well have been 'William' - it made me understand more about the Irish conflict than school ever did. Its out of print now, I've bought a few copies for my niece and daughter from fleabay - buy it and read it, you wont regret the few quid.

I enjoy non-fiction books - the best book I've read lately has been The Art of Resin Jewellery. I only recommend it to jewellery affectionados...?

Ditto Oppi's tome...http://www.amazon.com/Jewelry-Concepts-Technology-Oppi-Untracht/dp/0709196164/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1229134811&sr=1-1 this lives by my bed - I love to dip.

You are the only other person I know that has ever mentioned her! Did you ever read The Farthest Away Mountain? I last read it about 15 years ago and I still remember it vividly!

    Yes! God she's good! ?

Honestly, it was almost profound. But I've already said that. ?

Two people on the innerweb cant be wrong. ? Everyone should read Lynne Reid Banks.
