I have a Westie. ❤️ him!

They're stubborn dogs, but if you train them well, they're very good. They have big dog personality, but in a little package and he gets on with pretty much every dog we;ve ever come across. Very loyal. Excellent with kids. Are very much led by their owners in terms of activeness. If I want to have a lazy day, Benji will happily curl up on the sofa with me. If I want to walk for 10 miles, he'll happily trot along.

Only real con, you can't keep a white dog clean!!!

I must admit I did wonder what this post was going to be about! We have a beagle and he's such a great dog. By far the best natured little guy you will ever come across! They're a good size dog in my opinion but not a big dog, they're MEGA affectionate and love being with you, they're very social. Great with our friends kids and other dogs. They're also soooo cute! Funny you should say about spaniels and this could be pure coincidence, but my parents have always had spaniels so the first dog our beagle ever socialised with was my parents springer, trying got on really well, sadly my parents spaniel passed away nearly a year ago but even now Riley loves spaniels, he makes a bee line for them anytime we're walking.

We only have the one dog, sometime I wonder if we should have gotten another dog but he spends time with other dogs every day and I don't think it would be of any real benefit, we just make sure we give him plenty attention and play with him with toys etc.

The only cons I can even think of are that (like 99% of dogs) they do molt although they ate short haired do its not too bad and they can be very strong headed and we had loads of people tell us that beagles are hard to train but our wee guys trained really well and I wouldn't say he was any harder to work with than the spaniels!

He's totally changed our lives, I can't believe how much since we got him (in a good way!)

I have labradors and think they're fantastic.They're intelligent, loyal and easy to train. I suppose one of the only downsides is that they have loads of energy, so need a fair bit of exercise. They're brilliant dogs though and I'd love to get more! I'm sure Tray will be along soon to agree with me! ETA- we have 2 labs and they get on with each other and the two little dogs we have too (not sure what breed these are though!)

I have a black lab boy and he's as daft as a brush but incredibly loyal and affectionate. Shea is also brilliant with kids (a breed trait) and although he is boisterous with other dogs - its just because he wants to play. He's been really easy to train, and loves a good long walk. He does shed like mad but a quick brush with the furminator and he's brill.

I've had him 9 and a half months, but feels like a lifetime (in a good way) and couldn't imagine life without him.

Thank you girls. I have a 9 month old springer girl. Was a total dog novice to the point I was scared of even puppies but H has always had them and is a total pro. Now I adore dogs and see their little personalities. I am totally and utterly in love with her but am getting dog broody and think she would benefit too by having a playmate. I have the advantage of being with her all day but she has boundless energy. Every weekend we stay with t he in laws and she has the time of her life with their cocker. Just not sure if I could handle 2 spaniels together...

I guess not wanting another spaniel rules out a Cavalier? Dunno how they compare energy wise to springers & cockers, but mine tends to sleep much of the day now he's a bit older with little spells of going crazy! Heart of gold though, so faithful. Aren't really any cons...

Other dog is a jack russell terrier. Pros - So much character, I've found mine easy to train contrary to popular belief- they really are very clever little dogs! Very faithful, but deffo do have a mind of their own (and agenda at times). Cons - Definately moulting! Shed hair left right and centre. Also can be a bit barky, but thats just a terrier trait I think!

Both get on well together, although cavalier is a lot more sedate than JRT so can get a bit annoyed by him!

Have you thought about going to your local rescue shelter? If you specifically want a breed it's probably not ideal (although they do have them). We have a GSD cross with something - Love him to pieces. He was 5 months when we got him form the shelter, so he was still a puppy, but also more or less a blank canvas. he was young so really easy to train and socialise with kids and other dogs but had the advantage of being housetrained (bar one or two incidents)! I know shelters quite often get pregnant bitches in, so if you specifically wanted a puppy so that it would get on with your dog then you can talk to the staff and see.

I think if you get a puppy / young dog it will grow up to love your spaniel whatever breed it is! ? But i know what you mean about having two spaniels - we used to have one when i was a kid and he was enough of a handful, i do love springers tho!x

I have to agree ith Freckles and Tray! I've got an 11 month old black lab, and she's my everything. So loving, absolutely mental, and loves to play with her friends ? She's been easy to train, we took her to classes, but that didn't teach her anything she didn't know already.

My next door neighbour has a lab x springer, and he's lovely! So one would assume labs and springers get on well!

Missus S, I know what your meaning about two spaniels, they can be a bit hyper together, we had 3 at one point when I was young! I think if you decide to get another spaniel I would wait until your girl is a bit older and (slightly!) calmer! A friend of our family breeds them (working dogs) and he always waited until his youngest dog was nearly two before keeping another puppy otherwise he would struggle with training as they just carried on all the time! When they're a bit older there a much better role model for the new pup.

We would definitely consider a spaniel if we get another dog, it would be great for our beagle! I posted some pics of him on an earlier post. Do you have any photos of your spaniel? I love them!

German Shorthaired Pointer, best dog ever FACT. Well I would say that as I have one but honestly they really are great dogs. Great personality and temprement and very beautiful. I didn't know much about them before we got J but would definately get a pointer again.

Family has a bernese mountain dog - they are massive and very furry and a lot of work and a Jack Russell - ok if you like little dogs but very yappy and well i am not so keen on little ones. We also had Dalmations they are a good dog too.

Very disappointed that this thread wasn't about what I thought it was going to be about!

Another Labrador vote here! We have a 2 year old lab and he is so loyal and loving but so much fun too, great with other dogs although he gets a bit bemused by small yappy dogs just kind of looks at them confused for a while and then walks off, but other than that will play with anyone and loves to run around with my friends Focker Spaniel. He is great with kids too even!

He is just so easy, he gets on with the cat, is really bright so trained easily loves to chill and cuddle you when he is in the house but when you are out loves to play, swim, run and nosy at everything!

I can second checking out rescues. You can have a look around and introduce your girl before committing ? Breed wise, I have seen and had experience almost every breed going. They all have pro's and cons and it all depends on the size of dog you want and whether you'd want a similar personality to your Springer. Health problems are another huge consideration when looking into a breed, every breed seems to have its problems to go along with it and I've seen them all too unfortunately, which has put me off most breeds! We can't consider a dog yet (have 3 cats, baby on the way and I'd like a bigger house/garden) but when we do its going to be so tough as I feel I 'know' most breeds.

I worked with a dog rescue for a few years and couldnt agree more that it really would be great if you could consider a rescue. Its not the breed that will determine if it gets on with your springer but the dog itself. Rescues at the moment are overrun with jack russells and staffies, both can be such fabulous dogs. I love springers myself but they are hyper so a friend to play with is a great ida, just go and have a look around. I used to foster dogs and help find them the right home so have deal with all breeds and temperaments! Just rehomed last month a pup that was dumped outside my house it was a working cocker x collie at a guess, fabulous little girl only about 4 / 5 months old and scared stiff when I found her. Bless. Sorry, could talk dogs for hours!!!

Exactly this. Please consider a rescue dog, there are so many that are looking for homes. Our Judy is a greyhound cross, we got her from the pound 7 years ago and she is the most wonderfully natured dog I have ever come across. If I were to ever get another dog, it would be from a rescue centre.

1) Great Dane, big mess of a dog, like having a baby constantly and one that thinks he is much smaller than he is. Constantly knocking things over. Gentle giant and absolutely fabulous with kids as long as they dont mind a little bit of slobber.

2) Alsation, quite skitty, hair is a pain to keep in good condition as she is long haired. Very loyal to one owner and a little bit intolerant of others in her space (although to be fair she was a badly treated rescue dog so a majority of her insecurity comes from her previous home.

Pros for both are they are very loving, easy to train and loyal

Cons both big dogs and we get no room to sleep if they both decide to pitch up onto the bed

I'd recommend both breeds, social with each other and other dogs. Other dogs I would recommend are labradors, flat coat retrievers, golden shepherds, chesapeakes, rhodies etc all fab dogs with great temperaments.

We got a 7.5 week old Shihtzu he is now 4 months old and he is the best thing that ever happened to me and H. He is very obedient, but I'm not sure it's a normal trait for them, I read that they can be quite stubborn but I think it's down to you to get the best out of your puppy. We don't have the biggest of houses so because he is only small it works there is plenty of room. A shihtzu requires a lot of grooming I take Ray every month to have just the hair round his face cut, he is due to have his full coat cut now really and I;ll have to do this once every 3 months. They make a few snuffly noises because their faces are so flat but I can't really give you any cons, he is just the best companion I could wish for he is such a loving friendly, nice natured dog. He loves my friends 2 year old and he gets on great with other dogs. What more can I say.
