Dress Saga Continues - warning, long!!

50's pin up bride, 11 July, 2012 at 19:10 Posted on Planning 0 45

The dress saga continues - I get married in 10 days (squee!) and still don't have my dress. I ordered it (and paid 50%) in October, and was told 12-16 weeks (so it should have been in the shop by end of Feb at the latest). It arrived in the shop mid-March and wasn't right - it had been made in the wrong length, didn't have built in petticoats, the detachable petticoat was also the wrong length, and it had a zip when I had requested it be made into lace-up. It turned out these issues were the shop's fault, not the designer - the shop had been really unclear with the order, and had forgotten about the lace-up back completely.

Despite this, I was pushed slightly into paying the other 50%, and then they admitted fault and said they would sort all except the laced back (which they denied us agreeing to).

THEN they called and said instead of their seamstress altering it, they'd re-order a brand new dress in a bigger size (as they had also advised me to order a size 16 telling me the sizes were pretty true to high street, then said I should have ordered a size bigger than my usual size), with all the corrections. I was in the shop with them filling out the details and measurements, and stood next to the woman as she spoke to the designer and got a quote of £25 to put in a laced back instead of zipped. So I paid the £25 cash there and then, and got EVERYTHING written down and signed.

At this point, there were 14 weeks to go to the wedding. I said I wanted the dress in my hands at least a month before the wedding, so on the phone the Shop Lady asked Designer to have it ready in 10 weeks and they agreeds this was very doable. This went down on the order form too.

When it didn't arrive, Shop Lady started chasing them, and they discovered that Designer had put down AUGUST as the due date and hadn't even got it in production!! They started immediately, and I was told it would be in by last week so had made an appointment for last Thursday for first fitting. Then she called and said it wouldn't be in, but they were going to ship it out next day courier on Monday so it would arrive yesterday, so we booked an appointment for tomorrow (Thursday). I did have a large tantrum and pointed out that if I didn't have a dress in my hand by Friday 13th (8 days pre-wedding) I would want my money back so I could spend my last free weekend pre-wedding, looking for a new dress! They assured me this wouldn't be an issue.

So, tonight I get home from work to an answerphone message saying the dress isn't in because of a "problem with the van" and so could I call to "make an appointment for first thing Saturday morning". Hmmm, that's not FRIDAY, is it?!!

So, in theory, the dress is now ready and packaged up and TRYING to get itself to the shop. I have lost faith and feel I'm constantly being fobbed off with excuses. I've asked for a reduced price and some money refunded for all the stress and have been told no chance. I feel really cheated of the whole dress experience - I have no photos of it, I've never even tried it on (it was designed by / for me so never tried on a sample, just several dresses from the same designer), and because I'm anxious about it, it's really spoiling the run up to the wedding.

I've chosen a back-up dress (a Vivien of Holloway one) that I could order on next day delivery, and my current thinking is if the dress is NOT in the shop by lunchtime on Friday, I will order the VoH dress to arrive on Saturday (so my local seamstress has a week to alter it) but then if the 'perfect' dress arrives in the final week, I'll have 2 dresses and will have wasted a whole load of money. I imagine I'd get my money back for the perfect dress if it NEVER arrived in time for the wedding, but if it arrived a few days before I don't know what rights I have?

I'm so cross about the whole thing. There haven't been tears yet, but it's only a matter of time...!!

My goodness, that is just awful! I am so so sorry for you.

I can't believe they wont offer any kind of compensation, that is disgusting.

I have everything crossed for you that it arrives soon and everything is OK with it.

    Wow. You poor thing.

Ok. If the dress is finished there is absolutely no reason why it can't be in the shop by Friday. They should be sending a courier. You need to call ASAP and start unleashing hell. INSIST the dress is delivered on Friday as promised. Then make an appointment with the shop on Friday.

Once the dress is in your hands and fine, that's when you start kicking up an almighty stink about a refund of some description.

If, worst case, they say it will be Saturday, not Friday, can you make the appointment early then if it's wrong order the VofH dress Saturday to arrive Monday? Then 5 days to fit?

If the dress isn't fit for purpose when it arrives, personally I wouldn't be leaving that shop without my money back in my pocket.

Ahhh that's terrible. I posted a thread the other day asking if you had your dress yet as I am dying to see it but I guess this is why you didnt reply.

Fingers crossed for you Saturday, If it's not in then, I would order the VOH one on Saturday for a Monday delivery and in the meantime speak to your seamstress and explain the short notice and possible help needed.

Aah sorry Kat, I missed that completely!

I've just found out that the VoH shop is open on Sundays, so I'm now thinking I could wait until Saturday, and if it's not there, refuse vto leave without my money - then as you say I could order next day delivery for Monday.

Seamstress is amazing and knows we'll be tight to time!

Really feel for you, but sounds like you have a fantastic seamstress "on standby".

I agree with kharv & would INSIST they courier it to arrive on Friday - problem with the van is easily sorted by booking another van, and sounds like a pathetic fob off to me.

Certainly seek compensation for stress & anxiety - fingers crossed for you

Oh 50s, how awful for you. I would make a point of pointing out all the ways they have let you down as there have been many mess ups, and say you expect the dress there by Friday as agreed or a full refund to buy an alternative dress as you are not available Saturday.

I really hope they come through for you and the dress is exactly as you would like x

As the others have said, if you can wait til Saturday then do that but otherwise I would be telling them to get it in by Friday. Come hell or high water (perhaps too appropriate in this weather). You have a back up so that's good, but not the point. I would write down all the faults, communications and errors and present it to them after you get your dress, or need to cancel the order. Full refund all the way, the service has been appalling! Fingers crossed you get it sorted my love, this is the last thing u need with 10 days to go. ? for 10 days though!

Thank you all, it helps having people who understand the stress!

Yesterday, shop lady said she would personally go down to London and strangle the dressmaker if it hadn't arrived - I said, "Good, and bring my dress back with you!" (I think she thought I was joking...!)

She has faith it'll be in the shop today, and I've make an(other) appointment for 9am tomorrow morning to try it on / check it / collect it. I'm trying to remain reasonable with the shop until I have the dress in my hands, then I will let loose with the big style complaining! I've told the dress shop lady to call me as soon as the dress arrived and explained about needing my back up dress on next day delivery if the proper one hasn't arrived.

    Everything crossed, ladies!

Nope - and it's not going to!! They've let me down so much I wasn't even that surprised / angry / upset - I just feel numb.

So, I went straight to the shop and got a full refund, and I got my red roses (that were to be pinned over my dress) free (I should bloody well think so!) but they weren't budging on any extra compensation.

However, I've worked out that I've spent £45 in fuel going to / from their shop, all for nothing; now I'm going to spend around another £55 in fuel driving to London and back (going to Vivien of Holloway shop - don't know why I didn't just go there in the first place!) to say nothing for them having my money for 9 months (interest charged on my overdraft, while they earn interest on my money!) and the stress!

I'm going to invoice them as soon as all my costs are clear. Fortunately the VoH dress I'm leaning towards (this one) is only £89, and then I'd buy a bolero, belt and 1 or 2 petticoats, so altogether it'll probably cost around £200 (£250 with 2 petticoats) and the dress I've been refunded for was £500, so the different will cover my wasted costs (just in case I don't get them back) AND an extra dress (thinking of getting this sarong dress ) AND some more shooooooooz (I'm an irregular choice obsessive and am also loving some of the United Nude styles) to make up for the stress....!

My god 50's this is awful!

What reason did they give?! I think you need to put them to the back of your mind and have a lovely wedding.

Then go to town on them afterwards.

The final reason turns out that despite being a so-called British company who have been in the business over 20 years and have won loads of bridal awards, it turns out they get the actual dresses made in Hong Kong and ship them over ? so all that bollocks about the 'van' being delayed - turned out it was a plane, backed up due to Olympics air restrictions!!

I sort of feel I've had a lucky escape. I was examining my flowers really carefully last night and they're not if the same quality as the sample dress - I reckon they make up a few dresses in London to very high quality and then contract out the actual orders to HK, which is just shocking.

I really will go to town on them after the wedding, but for today I am feeling quite excited about shopping for MY wedding dress, and finally being able to flash you all later!!

I've just read this thread and am actually outraged for you, what a bunch of ***** to do this to someone. God help them after the wedding because I would be doing everything in my power to make sure they couldn't put another bride through this and I sense you will be doing the same.

BUT on a happier note, I hope you have a lovely time shopping for your dress today and will be looking forward to the flash!

On a positive note, you will look amaxing in your VOH dress and as you say, it may well be a blessing in disguise.

I actually felt sick for you when I just read it hadnt arrived! I am so sorry :-(

I seem to recall, a while ago, we had a conversation and you are fairly local to me. Is your dress from somewhere in Lincoln? The reason I ask is that my cousin got her WD from a shop in Lincoln, it was nearly £1000, custom made..... as she walked down the aisle, she felt the boning start to snap, and by the time the ceremony was over, she had blood on her dress from where it had cut her inside. She ended up sending someone on a mad dash to a haberdashery between service and reception for some ribbon and a needle and cotton, and she sewed in an emergency halter neck to see her through the day.

I hope your new dress is as beautiful as you want it to be - no bride should have this stress leading up to the wedding day.

I did a whole reply last night but then hitched ate it.

Anyhow, I too live in Lincolnshire, where I see your from, not sure if the shop you used was in the same county or not. But your story very much resembles mine from last year, and as I later found out many other B2Bs who used the same shop. The lady who owned the shop I used in Lincoln has since gone out of business, and quite rightly so. I ordered my BM dresses from there, and was initially told they were made in the US - complete lie, actually made in Asia. My dresses eventually showed up 1 week before my wedding, they then altered them poorly, took too much up, and too tight on the bust. I got off lightly because I made so much fuss - but a friend of mine who used the same shop her dresses arrived. 2 days before her wedding, and I know we weren't the only ones who suffered the same fate.

I sincerely hope the owner of the shop I used hasn't opened up somewhere else in the county and was the one that you used - I reported her to trading standards as I know other people did, and I really feel that you should do the same.

I hope you get the dress that you want and can move forward and enjoy your wedding day. I know from my own experience how stressed I was because of the incompetency of the shop, so really do feel for you.

ETA - sparkles, just seen your response - I recall this conversation with you last year, your cousin used the same shop as I did.

I'd go to the local press after your wedding and show the shop for what they really are.

Prepaying for your wedding is meant to be a wonderful time and sounds like a lot of brides are having extra stress and expense.

Cant wait to see your new dress.

The shop I used is in Lincolshire, but not in Lincoln - it's in a town beginning with H...

I do feel the designer is slightly more at fault - the shop were (or seemed) horrified to find out they were made in Hong Kong. I've spoken to Sam at Fairygothmother today as I noticed they are due to start stocking this brand in Autumn, and she has also been told by the designer that they are made in the UK, so they are obviously well used to spinning this story.

I'll be going to trading standards ASAP - I'm also invoicing the shop for my costs.

However, in happier news, I had a BRILLIANT day today - a lot of time in the car (8 hours!) and 1.5 wonderful hours in the Vivien of Holloway shop, and I bought the ivory full circle dress with lace overlay, red petticoat, ivory bolero and red satin belt (which I'm going to accessorise with the flowers I still have from the original shop) for the wedding, and then I splashed out on the black sarong dress with matching bolero for my 'going away outfit' which I'll wear with the red belt, a red flower on the bolero, and I already have some red, black and white IC shoes to go with it. The whole lot cost me £338 so I have saved plenty of money... enough to maybe treat myself to another pair of shoes (I have my eye on some lovely United Nude ones) and maybe a nice nightshirt / robe to wear on the morning of the wedding. It was obviously meant to be!

Here's a flash... You can't see the petti from this angle (BM photographer much taller than me!) but it's exactly level with the bottom of the dress so as soon as I move / turn / sit there's a cheeky flash of red!
