Ear piercing on a 6 year old.. Discuss..

Mrs S Smith, 26 April, 2008 at 22:52 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 76

Mr Smith got a text from his ex just now..

"Jr Smith has just had his ear pierced!" He's SIX!

Personally, I think this is WAY too young. Mr Smith asked how come, and she said "well they (Jr Smith and stepdaughter) are acting grown-up, so I'm letting them make grown-up decisions."

They also watch The Mighty Boosh, and Family Guy. Again, I reckon WAY too young.

So, what do others think?

Not for me but I guess it's down to the parents. I hate seeing small children with earrings, it looks so tacky. Especially little boys.

I agree with you. although I think they're obviously old enough to say they want it I don't think they're old enough to fully accept what it is/what they're doing and also able to keep it clean and the importance of that.

I don't watch those programmes so I don't know. I know something like the simpsons has a lot of humour in it aimed at different ages and I think that's fine

Same here. TBH, i don't like ear piercings on boys of any age, but that's just me.

Just wanted to see what other people thought.

I think that you've got an issue with your H's ex and it's not ear peircing.

With regards to what I think about the earring I agree with SC99 (first time ever I think! I must be mellowing)

I think that six is too young. Just because they think that they're adult - doesn't mean that they are.

Hmmm I don't really like it on boys. I had mine done when I was about 5 or 6 though! I begged my mum and my dad was not very happy - I was scared to tell him when I got a tattoo at 18! ?

yeah, Simpson's is fine. Family Guy has a lot of references (sorry, never used that one before!! ?) and is sometimes about cheating, beating each other up, etc etc. adult humour, definitely.

I've never seen The Mighty Boosh, but Mr Smith was FUMING when he found out the kids were watching it.

Of course, Ex seems no harm in it. then again, i don't think she's all that "there"; Jr Smith has picked up "I want to kill myself" off her. She used to say that when she was upset when Mr Smith and her were together, and obviously still does. Don't get me wrong, I've got NOTHING against people with depression and mental issues, as I have a personality disorder myself, but I try not to let the kids see any of "that" side about me when they're down.

I agree, its far too young for both the ear piercing and choice of viewing! My friend told me her 3 year old grandson has been in trouble at nursery for hitting othe kids mostly with weapons, as a punishment they have taken all his swords and 'pirates of the carribean 'videos off him cos he is copying the sword fighting, for gods sake my sis wouldnt let her much older kids watch those videos.

of course i have an issue with her, but it's not because of who she is as a person, it's with regards to how she raises her kids. I don't know her, so I can't judge her. I know she's made some bad decisions in her life, but haven't we all?

As a second thought - what about safety ? How easy would it be for an energetic 6 year old to rip his ear stud whilst playing ?

    very true!!

i think the plan of action is to take out the piercing when he's down next time while in bed, and "forget" where it is. so the ear heals up again ?

I can see how 12 & 14 yos can watch Family Guy, at least they UNDERSTAND the concept of the sexual references, and will be at the age of being curious.

If I hear Jr Smith or Stepdaughter utter a single "giggety-giggety"...!☹️!]

mmm, see, for me, that's different. i don't know why, i guess i'm just very stereo-typical in that boys should get their ears pierced as much as they should wear bras! ? ok weird comparison.. but it just seems so alien to me!

Yeah i agree, although it CAN look cute on little girls.. but then again, 6 is WAY too young.

I had to wait til I was 11 to get mine done, cos sis had had hers done at that age. For some reason, I was just too scared then! ? i was 21 before i had them done! had my nose done first, AND my tattoo![:I]

I'm not a fan of boys having their ears pierced at any age. 6 is too young for a boy or girl IMO.

I think 6 is too young for a boy or a girl, and I really don't like little boys with pierced ears at all!

I think I might let my daughter have hers done at about 11 (when she goes to secondary school) if she wants them doing, but I hope my son never wants them pierced!?

if/when Mr Smith and I have kids, the girl will have her ears done at the earliest at 11, and the boy? well, he'll just have to suck it up!?

I dont think 6 is too young.
My sister and I, and both our daughters, had our ears pierced at 5. We all wanted it done before then but had to wait until we were 5.

As for it being a boy piercing - so what. Its a personal preference.

I wouldn't let a 6 year old boy or girl get their ears pierced, I also wouldn't be keen on them watching those programmes either.

See, that comes across to me as using Jnr Smith to get one up against the ex. It's not fair on him if the ex has been an idiot. (Although I suspect I'd be tempted to do the same.)

What is Mr Smith's opinion on it ? Has he said anything to the ex ? Very bad of her to do it as a fait accompli IMO. She should have discussed it with Jnr Smith's dad first.

When my son was about 6 a lot of his friends had their ears pierced and I could see the inevitable coming. I don't like piercings on children anyway (babies in prams with studs in their ears is not a pleasant sight especially imo), but piercings can be removed quickly and leave little indication that they were there in the first place.

So instead of saying no (which was what he expected)I told him he could have it done if that was what he really wanted. He thought about it for a second and said 'will it hurt'. I said yes and he immediately said 'well I'm not having that done then'. He has never shown an interest since.

Six is far too young for the Boosh and Family Guy imo too.

Our 5 year old asked Thursday if he could have his ear pierced, i was shocked as he has never bothered before,
my H said no-way under any circumstances can he have it done.
When we asked him why he wanted it doing, he said because his friend at school was having it done.
So it wasn't because he wanted it dong it was because he is being a sheep.
My 2 year old niece has got hers done and it looks awful with it done.
I was 2 when i had mine done i only had one done as it frightened me that much they had to take me back 6 weeks later to have the other ear done.
    [:I]

I wouldnt take it out and hide it though,
i think he will soon get sick of taking it out and putting it back in after pe at school, they are not allowed to do Pe with them in.

I'm not a fan it little'uns with ear piercings tbh, apart from for cultural reasons as I understand that more.

So many toddlers have their ears pierced round these parts and it actually makes me feel quite sad.
