East Midlanders

Hmmm am supposed to be driving up from Sussex to Leicester via Kettering tomorrow.

How's the snow?

Am I mad to even consider it? Usually go M25/M11/A14.

Oh I so want to go, have been looking forward to it for ages. And if we don't go we'll have to go to first birthday party at end of Feb that I was hoping to get out of. Gah.

From what I can see of weather reports they think it might snow again in the area overnight... does anyone have more local info? thank you!

I was just about to mail you! It isn't looking good at the moment, we have a good few inches and it is still snowing, cars are getting stuck too. I will see how it is later but as it is at the moment I would say it might be better to postpone [:'(]

I'm in Nottingham and it's pretty thick this morning and still snowing quite heavily. It is supposed to ease up later and turn to rain though, so I'd see what it's like later tonight/tomorrow. H works in Leicester and managed to get in fine this morning.

I really hope it does melt. It is still snowing. I hate snow so much. The initial enertainment of watching the cars getting stuck outside has worn off now. Did I mention I hate snow?

Just spoken to my colleague in Derby - back roads are awful and the A38 isn't much better at the moment. He's abandoned trying to get to his meeting in Leicester.

Difficult isn't it? I'm in Leicester and we have 4 sets of friends due to visit us this weekend. Playing it by ear if we need to cancel too.

Its not good at the moment - snow from earlier in the week hadn't gone off side roads and lots (for here!) has come down. H walks to work and phoned me with a progress report. Bus's have stopped as the city council has run out of grit. Ring road (south of the city) has all but stopped so, of course, the traffic on roads to/across it are backed up. However, its just snowed and its rush hour - it could be completely different tomorrow.

We're fairly near Kettering, and it's bad here at the moment.

My partner walked into work to find no one else has arrived. He waited ages outside as he has no key and no one has come! He's absolutely freezing, so I told him to walk home to keep warm and I'll drive him up later whan people get there. So I'm assuming the rest of Northants is bad as none of his colleagues has arrived. Normally most of them get in in the snow.

Worst of all I'm moving this weekend, please can someone stop the snow!

Does anyone know if table salt will do any good to melt the snow? or is the salt they put on the roads a lot different. I'm just thinking of using something for the bit from my house to the moving truck!

We're effectively snowed in here in Derby.

Table salt will work but it won't go far. Brush off what snow and ice you can to make the most of it. We have some builders sand in the garage, its just a shame I can't get to it!

H got to work and so did all the other people in his section - all of who drive in. So it might not be as bad as H thought.

There's now rain in buckinghamshire and it's working its way upwards so I don;t think your snow will be around for much longer. I'm in SW London and the rain has pretty much dealt with any leftovers from monday...except the evil bit of ice outside the office which nearly got me again this morning!

Dishwasher salt is really good at getting rid of snow if you have any of that! I really hope it has gone by the time you move though. x

Dishwasher salt or the gritty type of cat litter works well if you have it ( not the paper based stuf lol!)

Thanks for the info about the salt, i've got some gritty cat litter (got 3 cats, so I have it coming out my ears!) - i never thought of dishwasher salt - I may have some lying around from my old dishwasher (I tend to hoard!)

I'm not looking forward to moving in the snow, can someone do a little rain dance to get the rain up this way to get rid of the snow.

I work in Kettering but I couldn't get in today and neither could many of my colleagues so we're all working from home. I have a good foot of snow outside my door and the car won't even move off the drive. The latest update we have from Pitsford weather station is that it will snow again overnight and won't melt until it rains later tomorrow (I'm a journalist though, not a weatherman!).

The A14 has been closed since about 9 am this morning - they are diverting the traffic through rothwell where I live and then up the A6 into Leicester.

Its now nearly 4.30 and it's still closed and backed up - the A14 hasn't been gritted and not cleared either - the lorries were jackknifing all over the place this morning.

I'm meant to be driving from London to East Lincs after work tonight - is that a totally nutty idea?

It's for a meeting in a Lincoln school tomorrow - does anyone know if the schools are/will be shut in Lincs?

    TIA

R-A a lot of the schools in Lincs were closed today I think - might be worth looking on the County Council's website to see which ones were shut.

Thanks for the suggestion phooey. I've looked on the Council website and it says the school I'm meant to be going to is closed tomorrow.

    Thanks ?

Leicestershire was terrible this morning. M1 was fine but the A6 was stationary. It took me almost 2 hours to do 8 miles. I didn;t get as far as work and as Master I's school was closed I had to turn round and come back.

According to the BBC, the A14/M1 J19 is still closed. Leicester was chaos this morning but was fine by lunchtime. They reckon blizzards are coming back tonight but as it stands now we have had no more snow fall and the roads are wet but clear.

I'm in south Derbyshire and the snow on our village roads is slushing up now, it's gone entirely on the main road. I imagine the main roads and motorways round here are fine, it'll be the side roads that cause problems, if any. Mr_cdl drove up the M1 from Hemel Hempstead this evening, the roads were fine and he's had a clear run as there's not much about. Hope you make it. x

I'm stuck in Thrapston - if it doesn't thaw a lot over night I'll never dare drive me and the children back to Kettering.

I am not too far from Leics, and the main roads are not to bad to be honest.

J25 of M1 area has had no new snow (yet) so I'd echo that main roads are fine. Hope you make it.
