Eb@y tossers - is it even worth reporting?

Kaz_76, 25 March, 2009 at 17:19 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

I'm not sure whether most sellers out there are actually tossers or whether I just seem to have the misfortune to come across them!

I bid on a pushchair on Saturday and was outbid by £5. Despite putting what I decided would be my maximum bid in the final few seconds, I got outbid then frantically decided I could go a bit higher but was too late! Wasn't too gutted as I know when you think 'oh for the sake of another £5', in reality you could have just t bid up and up beyond what you wanted to pay.

Anyway, still after this type of puschair so do another local search to find the exact same one listed as it has the same 8 photos of it but it now has a reserve price and listing says 'selling for a friend'. Hmmm

Looked at the feedback for the new seller and surprise, surprise, they have feedback on an item that ended only 3 hours ago from the same buyer ID as the person who won the pushchair auction. You with me so far? Interestingly, this item that just ended only had one bid and not very high so it is quite clear that this 'buyer' is an alternative ID/friend bidding on items so they don't get snapped up for a low price / to up genuine bidders' bids.

Grrrr! This kind of thing really gets to me.

I feel quite annoyed that had I put in a higher bid for tha pushchair and eventually won it on Saturday, the price was only put up falsely, in fact, fraudulently so at least I can gain some satisfaction I wasn't duped. But someone else will be now.

Has anyone else found obvious examples of blatant cheating on eb@y and if so, have they reported it with any outcome? I get the sense that eb@y is so huge, would anyone be bothered putting time to uncover stuff like this and take action?

It is against their rules though isn't? (isn't it called shill bidding?) - I'd report it if you are sure.

I would report it also. I had a weird thing, I sold a puschair locally and I then noticed she had listed it 3 times over the next few days with a false story. She was requesting postal order and local pick up and whilst I suspect it was a scam I cant work it out. All the listings were ended (by ebay I presume) and at one point she had a buy it now for the same price she paid me.

And the cheeky cow used my photos. Any ideas or am I just naturally suspicious? it didnt help she messed me about a lot and pretended to be out when I delivered it to her house

My friend's Brother in Law bid on one of her items without her knowledge to help her along and they both recieved emails from eb@y telling them to stop or both accounts would be closed and that they would be banned if it happened again. Perhaps if you report it they will be able to trace past bids and they might get shut down, you never know.

I think it's totally right that fleabay are tough on this kind of thing, but how on earth do they know if you are the seller's brother in law?

They didn't know R-A just went on the basis of same surname same home town - what a coincidence!

I think this was why they just got a warning but not an outright ban because they couldn't prove it.

ETA it's quite an unusual surname not Smith or anything ?
