Favours!!

Daisy82, 23 February, 2010 at 20:16 Posted on Planning 0 15

Hi all

I've just had yet another heated conversation with my mum about the wedding. This time it was about favours.

OH and I have decided we would like some kind of sweet in an organza bag in the same colour as BM dress which is royal blue. Mum has offered to make these using edinburgh rock and tying it up in organza circles with tartan ribbon (I'm scottish living in Suffolk). It was a really nice offer and I'm happy to let her do it especially as she offered to pay for them and she will make a good job of these.

The only thing is we are now arguing about the etiquette for favours. We wanted to put them on the table for the guests that were just eating but mum thinks you give them to everybody who gives you a present. I don't know which is the right way.

What is everybody else doing with their favours?

I thought you put them on the tables for the people who are eating. I've not been to a evening do at a wedding n received one, only with the sit down meal. scottish tradition may be different.

    Thanks.

This is what I think too. As far as I'm aware scottish tradition is no different. I have not been given a favour at any evening do i've been to either. I'll just have to try and persuade mum to my way of thinking.

I have done weddings that have done both, some just have them for the day Guests & others have them in baskets like this for the guests to help themselves:

Im in the middle of doing mine now, and I'm just doing them for the people who are at the meal. In fact I', starting to wish I hadn't bothered with them at all, it's very tedious trying to assemble 100 odd boxes and tie them neatly with ribbon! lol

How would you check that someone has given you a present before giving them a favour? Lots of people don't bring presents to the wedding, especially if there's a giftlist, and you couldn't really go round asking! I can imagine that handing them out is the kind of thing that might easily get forgotten about too. So I think we will have them on the tables for the meal with the place setting.

I'd just put them on the table for day guests.

I think it may be a bit of a hassle trying to keep track of people bringing you presents etc - won't you have to have someone there to just take presents and give favors away - sounds a bit unnecessary to me. also they look pretty on the tables and will add to your decorations.

WEES. We had them at everyone's place on the tables. I always thought you saved a piece of cake and put it in a cake box for those who gave you something but couldn't make it/weren't invited to the day?

My OH didn't want to waste money on something that would get left behind, thrown in the bin etc. I really wanted to have favours though so we have gone for charity pins so that if they do get left behind the money won't have been wasted. We've gone for half Children's Liver Disease Foundation and half Cancer Research (both for personal reasons) and I have tried to give people the one that will mean most to them. I've spent hours making pyramid boxes tied with a purple ribbon and flower for them to go in. I'm really pleased with them.

For the evening we have put 5 mini eggs in an organza bag for everyone (day and evening). It was going to be just for the evening guests but my bridesmaids and mum complained that they wanted mini eggs (pests!)?.

I've done 100 bags for around 120 guests. Our wedding is at 4 so we've invited everyone to the entire day.

There's no reason for favours to cost the earth. I got 50 red bags and 5 purple off ebay for £5 and used 3 jars of quality street which cost me £10.

I've put 3 sweets in each bag. They look really pretty for only a tiny cost.

    Thanks.

I don't want mum to waste her money so that's why I only want day guests to have favours. I'll just have to persuade her my way of thinking.

The favours are often part of the overall 'look' of the presentation of the table and are given to only ladies or all guests. x

    We are not having any!!!

Although I am toying with the idea of wine glass charms as place names so I suppose these could class as keepsakes?!
