Fish and Chips

Oddbins, 21 August, 2009 at 14:35 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 27

How much are they in your area? I have a friend visiting and we called for chips on the way home yesterday and she was stunned at how cheap they were here - £3 for cod and chips so I thought I'd ask it being Fryday and all ?

I think about £3 for fish and chips here too. Our local chippy has a cafe bit upstairs and we went there last weeek for lunch, we got 2 adult fish, chips, peas/curry, bread and butter and a drink and two children fish, chips and beans and a drink and some extra bread and butter and it came of £17 which didn't seem too bad!

Ummm.......we recently had 2 x cod (large) and chips with mushy peas in Bakewell and that came to £10.45.

Back in Suffolk it used to cost £7.80 (for two portions) from our local, for the exact same.

It's been so long since we had fish and chips I can't remember. I think it's generally about £15 for both of us to eat - our usual order is large haddock/cod, calamari, large chips and usually a side of some kind.

    ?

Never? Blimey, missus. You're missing out...

We rarely have them (twice a year, maybe) and I think they're about £3.50.

Well I don't eat fish, and neither does Mr R-A, but you get a good sized portion of chip shop chips for £1 at our local, although saying that we had them on holiday in Wales last month for the first time in at least a year, I love them but Mr R-A would much prefer a curry or pizza if we're getting lardy takeaway food.

Ah, fair enough then. We live just round the corner from a good fish and chip shop, so I'm surprised we don't have them more.

Hmmmm, she says, wondering what to have for tea tonight....

I had chips and curry sauce last night and that came to £2 in Leeds, not sure how much a fish is?

There was a sign on the chippy wall saying that compared to a burger and chips, a pizza, and a kebab, fish and chips has by far less fat and calories than all of them (it was something like 585 cals for fish and chips). Does that sound right?! I was surprised how few calories the poster was claiming F&C had - I would have guessed at way higher than that.

Anyone know of a good chippy in Leicester that doesn't just batter defrosted fish?

I feel your pain, being near the Oval, I pay over the odds too. We had F&C a couple of weeks ago - £13 for 2x haddock & chips. Mind you, they were big old bits of fish, and I couldn't eat all my chips, but all the same...

I've been craving chips and curry sauce for ages but have resisted so far. It really doesn't help that there's a chippy next door to my gym - that lovely smell after you're feeling all weak and tired is so hard to resist!

Can't really speak for the precise calorific value, but yes, F&C is by far the "healthiest" option - certainly the least fat if cooked properly.

The concensus seesm to be that fish and chips = 600, Domino's 9.5" Margerita = 750, quarter-pounder with cheese and chips = 800, and most shocking of all, the average UK doner now has over 1000 and about a week's worth of salt . . .

. . . although on the plus side it does come with some salad ?

I don't, but I think you'll find that's how most places make fish and chips. Freezing keeps the fish fresh.

We rarely have fish and chips but in Whitby a few weeks ago, it was about £5 for a large fish and chips. Not sure of prices down here yet due to not visiting.

I worked in a chip shop for two years, while I was a student. I've worked in much more upmarket places but the chippy was my favourite ? (and most definitely the cleanest).

We used to live near the coast (near Southwold if anyone knows it) and that is where our fish and chips used to come from. So defrosted doesn't compare to fresh! ?

If anyone finds themselves near Fishguard, near Pembrokeshire, I can recommend 'Something's Cooking' in Letterston. Huge portions and fab fish ?

I'm on the north-east coast, and last time I bought F&C it was £4 - but that wasn't cod, it was panga (?) I think. Cod was 50p more and cooked to order.

There is a wonderful chip shop in Wimbledon which is directly opposite one of the busiest bus stops in the town centre - where I get my bus home outside the station.

It gets a lot of passing trade from the bus stop. It's over £6 for fish and chips but it's the best fish n chips ever - even better than my one back home in Manchester, and I didn't think that was possible. The haddock is the size of a small whale!
