fitting - dress looks different - just want to cry

yes2011, 20 July, 2011 at 16:07 Posted on Planning 0 29

I'm very upset about my dress. It arrived and I had my fitting yesterday, and during the process I always thought: something's not right. I felt the cleavage was bigger, it did not fit perfectly on my boobs (it felt like it's hanging "down"), and the waist is not as pretty as I had remembered. My friends told me it looks great but today I looked at pics from when I bought the dress and it definitely looked better then on me.

I cannot figure out what the problem is. I might have gained a bit of weight, the hair is different, the light is different. Could it also be that the dress was made a bit different, like that around the boobs it's larger or the sleeves are longer? Please please look at the pics and tell me what you think is different. I will have another dress fitting and if there's anything (except me doing sports) I can tell the seamstress I'd like to hear. Very honest please.

Thank you!

P.S. I will not wear a veil, and the hair do will be up.

forget the veil on the left

    Hi

You're right, something is slightly different. The dress is gorgeous though and it looks lovely on you ?

In the bottom photos then it looks like the neckline now is cut lower than it was in the first pics. Did you have a different bra on maybe? Looking again I'm not even sure that it is that but more that it sits lower down on you if that makes sense??

Please don't take this the wrong way because you have a nice figure but have you thought about a pair of Spanx maybe? My dress looks a lot sleeker on when I'm wearing them. x

It definitely looks like you have more cleavage - have your boobs gone up in size since the first fitting? Or have they cut it too low somehow? I am not good with this stuff but I am sure someone more helpful will be along.

Aw bless. I'm sorry you are so upset.

If I am really, really honest I think you are right. The dress looks like its 'hanging different in the two pictures. AM I right in saying the left hand side pictures are the 1st ones??

Are you wearing the same bra as you did in the first fitting. It does seem to sit lower over your bust.

I know I may have made things worse by being honest but I guess you know its not in your head. Your friends are right tho, you look lovely in it in the 2nd pics but if your not happy with it you should get it put right.

To be honest, to me it just looks like an underwear problem. Your boobs look a lot more supported in the first photo - as the PP said, did you have different underwear on? The rest of the dress looks the same to me though. I also think your posture may have a lot to do with it - you look a bit dejected in the second photo, your shoulders and more slumped and you aren't standing as proud as you are in the first photo. Also, as the other poster said, Spanx will create a more streamlined look x

Firstly your dress is gorgeous! Secondly are you wearing a different bra?! Your boobs look higher which I think lifts the dress making your waist more defined? I would take a number of different styles of bra to try on. Once your boobs are lifted the very pretty detail will show. (seamstress might take it up in the shoulders as well if you feel its too big???!) Also your posture is completely different are you wearing heels in the pictures on the left? That will make a difference too. Finally not that you need it your figure is brilliant but what about some spanx to pull tummy etc in might help with the confidence?! Hope thats ok and I havent overstepped the mark?! Having worked in retail for years I know the key to things like this is usually the underwear. ?

I can sort of see what you mean about the two looking different but the only thing that strikes me is that the neckline in the first pic looks wider at the shoulder, cut straighter (in your dress it looks ever so slightly curved) and not as deep. But could this just be because your actual dress is a little big? Or if you weren't feeling happy during the fitting when the pics were taken, it could be something as simple as not standing straight and with your shoulders back. Also the colour looks different, but I imagine thats just the light in the pics. Did you order the same size as the sample?

It still looks lovely though ?

I have stared at those photos for ages and the 1 thing that I think is making a big difference is that the shoulders of the dresses are sat in different places.

In photo1 if you look at the shape of the V is is wider than the V in photo 2, which is thinner, and therefore the bottom of the V sits lower. It took ages for me to work this out though, and it was only the sleeves that finally solved it for me. If you look at your shoulders, the lace part of the sleeves is wider in photo 2 than in photo1, which at first made me think you must have put some weight on, except that you don't look like you have in the rest of the dress, just that top part. Then I noticed that the sleeves look shorter in photo2, which would also be explained by the neckline sitting differently.

It looks like you are wearing the straps closer together in photo2 than in photo1. Not sure if that is the way they are sat on you, or if the dress has actually been cut differently. But might be something worth looking at next time you try the dress on!

A remember a dress maker telling me once about a bride whose shape fluctuated quite a lot depending on where she was in her cycle. They had to work out how far in she'd be on the wedding day, and schedule fittings accordingly. Your post just made me think of this.

Hmmm, I also think it looks different. I have to agree that I think the neckline looks as though it sits differently on you and that the sleeves look shorter. Have you spoken to the shop/seamstress about your concerns?

All that aside, it is a beautiful dress and it looks lovely on you.

OP here. Thank you all for the quick replie, no one overstepped, you helped a lot with being very honest - so thank you for that!!!

I might have had a different bra on, but they were not largely different. Should I wear a bra with more push-up effect then?

I'm wearing the same (old) tummy tuck pants in both the old (left, pretty) and new pictures. Can anyone recommend a good spanx (John Lewis, Debenhams???) please? Should I go for one where I can wear an extra bra? Never had a full spanx. Should I get one that's like a dress, like pants to the knees, or what's best? I don't want the fat to come out on the sides where the spanx stops (sorry for being so blunt).

The seamstress said it's not possible to shorten the dress from the shoulders (pull it up) - not sure why.

Posture - you are right, in the second pics I'm not so happy and not standing straight - the first one I was so amazed by the dress and very proud to be a bride.

I also just had my period during the fitting yesterday - the idea about the cycle is interesting and quite surprising too.

So I'll get spanx, try other bras, do sports.

Would you go and get the dress back from the seamstress and bring it for the next fitting? It's 1 hour away.

I even feel like trying on the sample dress in the store again to see if the neckline is different (won't help me much though).

    THANK YOU!

....i started writing this before you replied above.....

The gown does look different, and i can see why you can't put your finger on it. but like others have said, it's quite possibly an underwear issue. Also, you look happy in the first photo (i know you can't see you face, but your body language suggest's your happy) but you look like your a bit deflated in the 2nd. your shoulders are relaxed and you don't look as happy/impressed.

The dress still looks fab on you though!

My dress came in a couple of weeks ago and it's a lot poofier than i remember it which has put me off slightly, but i'm hoping a smaller underskirt will sort this. Otherwise i'm going to have to only have one of my parent's walking me down the aisle!

Different bra? was the 1st photo shot bey someone sitting down. You need to show them both photos Yhe dress seems a larger size and the sleeves don't hang the same as they are longer. It's like it needs lifting at the shoulders

Just to re-iterate what has already been mentioned - I really think it could be your cycle. A few days before and during my period my boobs and tummy are alot bigger. So much so, I plan to go on the contraceptive pill just so I can attempt to mess my cycle up as I am due on a few days after our wedding date Smiley smile

I think your shoulders on the dress need lifting. It is possible as I have had mine done. This means that the waistband lifts and gives a better boob cover IYKWIM.

Lovely dress by the way. I wish I could have a photo of mine before the day.

I would def go back and speak to your seamstress about having the dress lifted at the shoulders. I don't understand why that can't be done to give you a bit more coverage on your boobs.

Spanx wise - thank you for taking my original comment in the way it was intended! I have bought these http://www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10001_10001_158010420986_-1?breadcrumb=Home%7Etxtspanx

Sexy? Nope but they smooth my tummy and ass! They also do them that come up to just under your bra but I didn't find these very comfortable and would struggle to get them down. As your dress has straps you may find a full slip more comfortable instead.

I don't think you need to worry about fat at all! HTH x

OP here. Thank you for the further comments! I also think that the straps must be altered, I had just thought it's not possible. It will probably be quite expensive and I'm not happy about this since the sample dress had fitted perfectly and now all this hassle to change a brand new dress.

I feel like I just want to get the sample dress and exchange it for the one I have - but then I paid lots of money for a new one... Would any of you do that?

    Thanks!

    A

P.S. I went and bought a new bra at John Lewis with a nice lady who helped me find a perfect size, and a flexees body slimmer (http://www.johnlewis.com/65840/Product.aspx).

I'd go instore and compare your dress with the sample to make sure they are the same size, someone else had a similar problem on her where the sample fitted but the dress they'd had ordered in the same size didn't.

If you feel better in the sample then all you can do is ask the shop what they can do for you, partial refund maybe, especially if there is a difference in the size.

Hope you get it sorted out x

I don't know if it's just me but your posture appears different in the two sets of pictures, which would certainly have an impact on how the dress looks on you. In the original photos you appear to be standing with a more positive attitude, giving it some sass with the hands on hips etc. It's almost like in the fittings you're showing your unconfidence physically, which will make your boobs look lower etc etc

It's a fab dress, stick your shoulders back, boobs out and you'll knock 'em dead!

This will depend on how the dress sit at the armhole... If you lift from the strap the armhole becomes smaller underneath the arm and will a)not look / sit right and b) will be uncomfortable.

Like everyone has sugested a good pair of underwear will work wonders.

I have to agree. This was my first opinion when I first saw the two sets of images. Your shoulders seem to be sloping in the second set of images. The change in posture could be caused by lots of things but I do know in my job, sloping shoulders (something I am cursed with) can cause all sorts of issues with getting things to fit correctly. Stangely enough in the first set of images your shoulders seem more square. This might just be how you felt on the day maybe. Also the first set of pictures are far better quality, the lighting, your posture, composure etc.

Other than this, I know nothing about dresses. Sorry.

I hope it all works out well for you.

    Marc

It does look a little bit different around the boob area I think, does it just need picnhing in at the shoulders/under the arms? I think your posture is slightly different which is an easy one! Where you wearing different shoes i.e. heels the first time round?

I think the shoulder straps are closer together in the new dress and also the top half is dropped futher down and all needs lifting up ! Did you have someone lift it at the shoulders ? I too would compare with the sample. You are standing uncomfortably in it too which won't help at all.

What a pretty dress!!!!!! I went through a similar thing I loved my dress and then I really didnt like it but I've come back around again. Time of the month definately has something to do with it!!! and underwear. Id go back with your new bra, do your makeup really nicely and your hair and then try it again!

I think it looks beautiful, really pretty!

    OP here.

Thank you all! I went back and tried on my dress again. Then I compared it to the sample dress which the shop lady brought to the seamstress for me. I was wearing a wonderbra and spanx. The sample dress definitely fit better again. But it had already been sold to someone who was supposed to pick it up the next day, so I could not get it Smiley sad

They measured the cleavage of both dresses after I insisted, and they said it is the same length!?!?

The seamstress talked me out of shortening the shoulder straps because under the arms it will become to tight and she will have to put a seam on the side sleave which will have to be cut (she cannot take the whole lace off apparently). So I will go back next week...

We will definitely pin up the side sleeves a bit to lift them up.

I don't want that line between the boobs to show too much, so I might not wear a push-up or try and find another solution, maybe have some lace sewn in the cleavage.

It's really great to get all this advice from you!

Glad you are feeling happier about it. Another idea would be to take it to another alterations lady who isn't afraid of dismantling the dress. I might be a bit naive but I don't see why the lace can't be removed and re-sewn.
