Frozen chopped onions - a warning

Saisi, 11 April, 2012 at 12:50 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

After the thread the other day where people were talking about buying pre-chopped onions, I thought I'd try and be clever and do it myself.

So I chopped up a whole bag of onions, whacked them in a food bag and put into the freezer. Last night H opened the freezer to see what we had in and MY GOD the smell! It was just an ordinary onion smell but intensified by about a hundred!!

I used some of the frozen onions and they fried up nicely but our ENTIRE freezer stinks. Am going to use the rest of the frozen chopped onions ASAP and then never try that again! I was sure I'd done it before and was fine but maybe I'd just made it up in my head ?

Oh no! We do that all the time but keep ours in a plastic tub, it seems to keep the smell away Smiley smile

Gonna try and pop them in a tub tonight but we don't really have any that close properly. Well... we do... but they're at my parents' house under the rest of the wedding gift list presents, waiting for us to move!

I always use frozen ones for cooking (spring onions for salad) as I can't chop them with my contact lenses in without my eyes stinging like a mofo.

I just did a mega asda online shop (loads of things for £1 plus cashback tempted me in) and ordered a plastic packet of frozen onions. I will be sure to transfer them to tupperware after opening, thanks!

No, I store unchopped onions (in their skins) in the cupboard. I never have a peeled onion, or half-onions lying around... if I peel one I will use it all.

I just thought I could chop loads at the weekend and then use them during the week rather than chop a new one every day, so thought I'd freeze the chopped onions. I don't see this as weird... people use things like frozen chopped veg, what's the difference?

I would imagine you'll lose a lot of the goodness when doing this ?

I'm probably very wrong, just what I imagine !!

Had to laugh at the title of this thread - sounds deadly serious ?" />

I actually think frozen vegetables hold their goodness really well. Alot of restuarants use frozen peas.
