Googling your own name ?

Pint&APie, 2 September, 2008 at 14:03 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 42

I wonder how often people do this ?

I had a call yesterday from somebody at one of the (scientific) regulatory authorities. The person didn't really explain who she was, so I googled to find out her role. Now, this is where it gets a bit wierd. She has a pretty unusual name, and the hits are almost entirely work related except one . . . an "old classmate" of hers bad-mouthing her on a blog.

Chances are she has seen it, and I know its none of my business, but at the same time, if somebody was talking about me behind my back, I think I'd rather know !

I've just done it now and it's page 6 before there's anything that's actually about me. It's all myspace and bebo-related stuff about someone else with my name, oh and an Aussie dancer on a show called The Wiggles. ?

I've done it a few times, mainly to see if anyone has quoted any of my papers.

The fun part is all the other diverse people who share my name. I am also a published author, a very religious Country and Western singer, a handbag designer and a geologist from Edinburgh...

On a general google search I show up on page 7, but UK specific I'm on page 1!

My name is pretty unique (weird biblical first name, traditional English surname), so all the hits are for me.

Sadly just research papers and quotes from those papers.

I just googled myself and ther is nothing on me. Not a sausage. Anonymity is lovely. ?

This is probably because I've only had this name for nearly 14 months.

If I google my former self, it's all about an actress who was oscar nominated for her role in Hilary and Jackie, and who starred in 6 feet under.

My maiden name is an late eminent doctor who had a hospital (well part of) named after her. It also happened to be my hospital which caused much confusion when I turned up for appointments. ?

I could also always find myself quite high up the list because of my charity work but haven't looked for ages.

My married name is an actress, a teacher, a couple of bloggers then me (well my photos) on page 7 of google. I'm famous. ?

I'm the world's leading authority on skateboarding, as JK discovered when she Googled me after we first met. Fortunately, she put two and two together.

One very handy thing about one chunk of my family is that the spelling of that particular surname is - we think - unique as a result of it changing during transit from Ireland to New Zealand. I keep Googling it periodically, but I've yet to turn up anyone I'm not related to: even the guy who was part of the Lost technical crew turned out to be a distant cousin.

Mine used to bring up a transvestite, then my graduation was there for a while. H has the same name as someone famous so googling for him is boring.

Hmmm, a general Google search of my maiden name brings me up twice on the 1st page, and again, twice on the 1st page with a UK search (although different pages)

    oooh! I'm almost famous!!!

    I don't exist!

And with my maiden name, I appear on some industry minutes, and a Japanese website.

I'm on the first page, as is a real estate agent from Colarado. My surname is the same as a Florida beach, so lots of references to that.

If I Google my name "+ uk" every entry on the first page is me - but I do have a slightly unusual name.

Nothing exciting, though and no-one slagging me off ?

The real me comes up second on the web-wide search. It's just my employer's website though, so nothing too exciting!

I haven't done that for ages. Just after I left uni there were loads (well, about half a dozen) of hits on the real me, but now I'm too boring, apparently.

I get a load of stuff about an American politian and his intern - and the scandal around that.

The only entry that's really me is (oh the shame) an entry on 'Have Your Say' where I used my maiden name.

When I Google my married name, I get up two reviews posted by me regarding two crappy restaurants.

If I Google my maiden name I get loads of newspaper articles from when I was show jumping and other articles about my extended family.

We are the only ones with our last name(in the world as far as we know).

I appear to share my name with that of a High School teacher in America. Her school hit notoriety this year by having a student cause a breach of the peace by bringing her pony to school!!

Maiden name is mostly me (my websites, old work websites and papers/quotes from me), though there is one that suggests I've become a church elder offering biblical discipleship training.

Married name is much more common and I appear to be both an estate and travel agent.

    Rude gits, stealing my name.

With my married name I don't exist.

My maiden name brings up a story (fictional, I hope) about a 2 year old who was abducted in 1981 and never seen again. I was 2 in 1981?

Under my married name (double-barrelled and not the same as anyone else) I just get loads of stuff inviting people to contact me if they have any comments to make about papers - unfortunately this is from my last job.

Under my maiden name I'm an artist, someone who works for the city council in Birmingham and I own a vineyard in Australia apparently!

My maiden/professional name brings up me, first page, first entry if you put "Dr" in front of it.

Don't appear in my married name at all. I appear to share my married name with a C list American actress.

I did this about 6 months ago - to see if searches for my name found my website - and posted the result on WP as it freaked me out a bit. The fourth result on Google was for a memorial site for a girl...

    - Same name (obviously)

    - same birthday as me

    - died on my sister's birthday

Yep a few coincidences but too freaky for me to read any further!

I've not found myself yet via Google, which I'm very happy about. Others bearing my name, however, include a Protestant Minister, a golf pro and a fashion designer. Perhaps my favourite is a character in a thriller about Russian Mafiosniki. Cool.

Theres only one more of me in the UK, and we found each other - on a wedding website, but not hitched. Was freaky. And it turns out she had a SIL who shared my sisters name.

I did google myself and it was ALL about ME!!! ?
