Grooms Speech

SaSaSi, 17 June, 2011 at 13:34 Posted on Planning 0 25

Hey hitchers,

OH is trying to write his speech....and he wants it to start differently to 'on behalf of my wife and I' but he / we are struggling to find an alternative opening.

Ive goggles, ive looked through the speeches on hitched & to no avail.

Does anyone have any suggestions or website recomendations?

Thanks!

What sort of approach is he looking for? Formal, humourous?

My OH started with "Family, Friends and Freeloaders..." and looked straight at his mates who were rolling around!

How about....'My speech is like a mini skirt, long enough to cover the basics but short enough to keep your attention'

My H started with something along the lines of "so, like Henry VIII said to his wives, I won't keep you long..."

My OH hasn't even thought about his speech yet. Eek. Perhaps I should nudge him? ?

It's 3 months till our big day and I started writing mine 4 months ago. It's more or less complete but I keep tweaking and fiddling with bits as I think of them, or go back and reword it to make it run a little smoother.

Some can 'wing it', I can't, so it has to be perfect before I stand up.

I think winging-it is what my OH is gonna go for. He's so unorganised. He'll probably write it the night before. I don't care to be honest, as long as he tells everyone how hard I've worked on this wedding Smiley winking and obviously how beautiful I look.... that's mandatory. Even if I look like sh*t. *snigger*

Like I said, it's still "a work in progress" but this is the opening bit, which to be honest I'm not 100% happy with To explain the context (which of course it won't make sense just reading it here but it will on the day), I'm going to have a 'washing line' behind the top table with pictures to stick up at relevant points through the speech, which my b2b says she is happy to put up when I need them. Also the "only just begun" references is to see if anyone notices because we've got a song by The Carpenters as one of our bits of ceremony music.

Milk, bread, lettuce, tinned tomatoes, fishfingers… oh hang on that’s the wrong bit of paper, sorry.

Now, I’m sure you know that all the best presentations are illustrated ones, although sadly the room didn’t lend itself to using Powerpoint as the screen is in the wrong place, I’m doing the next best thing and putting up some pictures at key points throughout my speech, with the help of my glamorous assistant. Don’t worry if you can’t quite see them now, they’ll be left up afterwards so you can come and have a good look at them.

Family, friends, work colleagues…speaking on behalf of both my new wife and I (and making the most of it whilst I can), thank you all for joining with us here on our special day. We’re delighted that you were able to come along and be part of the celebrations, which of course have only just begun.

I’d like to start by thanking you A for your toast and kind wishes, and to you and B, C, D, E (and of course not forgetting the most important people, Lightning, Orchid and Frisky) for welcoming me into the family.

Usually a thanks to everyone there, a thanks to best man, any other member of wedding party for this that and the other.. blah blah.. a little background on how him and his bride met, another cute but funny story, some sentiments, how beautiful his bride looks, how lucky he is, how wonderful the day has been.. "and hope you all relax and enjoy the rest of the day with us." That sort of thing I guess?!

That makes sense, we have months to go yet but OH is already cra*pping it. He didnt even realise he had to make a speech until I said the other day. He asked what he was meant to say and I wasnt sure so thought I would ask as we were on the topic. I told him as long as he tells me I look nice then I dont care what he says, he said he would probably forget to so I wont hold my breath Smiley tongue

My H2B reckons he's going to say 'my wife is hot, let's get pissed' ...and that's it!

I'm pretty happy with that ?

I don't have any suggestions but, as a wedding guest, I hate hearing jokey intros because the grooms usually quite nervous which makes the first few lines hardest to deliver, I think that a joke further into the speech works better.

Apparently my OH already knows what he's going to say in his speech, he just hasn't written it down yet (he thinks I will cheat and read it before the wedding - he's right I would). I was really surprised, I thought he would be another one who scribbles something down at the last moment.

    I Like it!

My H told me he was just thanking everyone and giving out the gifts and that was all he was 'suppose' to do, he said that he didnt need to blub about how much he loves me and all that as I should already know that.....etc.... I was fine with this as he gets so nervous I thought that was really why. Then on the day he did the speech that Id already heard and then he goes on to say......And now id like to tell you about my beautiful new wife.... he was so relaxed and said the loveliest things and made me (and everyone else) cry like a baby!!

It's up to him what he says but I think it is the thanking everyone mainly and saying how great his bride looks. I think it's the best man's speech that has the most attention on it and is expected to be full of jokes!

Also I thought the dads speech was meant to be long and all about embarrasing the bride but my dad just got up and said a couple of jokes about the best man's speech and said thanks for coming and did a toast! He did think he was meant to be naming and thanking/toasting all the bridal party bless him so that took a whole chunk of his speech out as H had already done it!!

    Forgot to add

H just started his with something like..... Thank you Bob, Guess it's my turn now! (With a slightly scared expression on his face)...... Then had the jokes in the speech.

My OH has said the same, I think mine is saying this to make out he's all macho, but he'll have secretly thought out what he's gonna say.
