growing your own, help please

ashke_again, 14 June, 2009 at 13:54 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

Right, i have a little balcony (well not so little 20 feet by 3) and i can only have 2 pots due to restrictions for fire escapes. I'd like hardy herbs in one (rosemary and thyme) but what veg can i grow in the other? I can't have too big a pot as I have to be able to move it.

This is where I live atm

The sea is 1/2 mile off to the right of this picture but we can get a fair bit of sand/grit on the windows and there is always a breeze...

TIA [thank]

I'm a total newbie to this and hopefully someone with greener fingers will be along soon but after some Hitched advice we've got chillies, peppers, cucumbers, lettuce and aubergine in window boxes in our 3rd floor flat. We've only had them less than a week but we haven't killed them yet ?

Also planning on getting some cherry tomatoes.

Could you put a handing basket up? you can get tom plants which are good in a hanging basket and would save you a bit of space (just rember to water lots as they dry out quickly) think they are called tumpbler toms and are cherry tom size.

letuce is easy to grow espeically cut and come again, i have been using a mixed salad leves sead this year and have just been cutting bits off as and when i need it and its kept on growing back (have cut from a diffrenc place each time)

the greenfingered bord on monysaving expert is realy good for ideas/ advice as well.

edited to give you a link about grwong toms

Wish I could put hanging baskets up but the walls aren't the best ☹️ and we're renting atm. Wouldn't like to know what would happen if I forget to take em down when it gets windy ?

Meh, think I'll have to wait till I move or look into an allotment...

I have a little yard and in pots i've been growing

salad leaves, which grow quick and keep growing back even when i've eaten them,

mangetout, these are just starting to turn into vegetables, and it says that you can pick them and freeze them so i don't have to eat them straight away

Tomatos although they're not very big and i have no tomatos on them yet.

    Peppers

    Dwarf french beans.

All seem to be doing quite well and are really easy to look after, nothing has died on me yet.

Are you going to be growing them from seed? If so a lot of the seed packets that i got said that the vegetables needed to be sown in march/april time so you might be a bit late. I got the green beans and mangetout though from the local garden centre and they were already little plants which i have grown on.

Would be looking at plants if I do a pot of veg now. Have emailed about an allotment but apparently they are like gold dust in Aberdeen atm.
