Did you have one? / Are you having one?

I know there are various different imaginative ways of doing this these days but I'm wondering do we even need one at all? The last thing I want it to spend money on a book and then only have a few people write in it.. Or am I being a miseryguts?

It takes someone to do that to get people to fill it in so that was lovely of you

We're having one, but doing something a bit different- we're having wooden puzzle pieces that are doubling up as place settings/names.

We didn't really want to do something where everyone had to consciously seek out a guestbook and sign it, because in our experience, people don't tend to unless they're prompted.

Each table has their own puzzle (every table different)

After they've signed it they can put the puzzle together as a table (if they want to)

It might be a talking point/get guests interacting a bit. Hopefully!

We've talked about having the puzzles framed after the wedding, but we'll wait and see how they look first.

I liked the idea of the thumb print tree - but like you I wondered if anyone would bother to do it!

We will always have the cards from people and the photos so in all honesty I don't think I am going to bother x

We had one. Quite a lot wrote in it.

It was nice to read together in bed the next morning with a brew.

Re Thumb print trees, I may be grumpy but if I was all dolled up in my finest, i wouldn't relish having to stick my thumb in some ink.

    Is it just me?

We're having a thumb print tree, but we are going to have a bridesmaid station at it, with a pack of wet wipes, to make sure it doesnt end up in an inky mess and everyone can clean their hands after it!

I went to a wedding in May & they had a thumb print tree. You don't get that messy & it looks good!

I'm having a fake tree that will be used as a table plan in the day & a message tree in the evening. So there will be giant hearts that represent each table hanging off it in the day with everyone's names on. In the evening there will be a box full of small heart tags for people to write a message on & hang off the tree. We get a keepsake box to put them all in.

We had a guest book. It was beautiful and personalised and people signed it. It's up in the loft in a box now. Don't know if we'll bother to look at it again!!

Moral of the tale - probably not worth spending hours of thought or lots of money on.

I rather like the idea of a traditional book - I'd love to have other people's thoughts to keep as memories. I'm sure we'll get some pearls of wisdom and plenty of laughs from it. So kind of people to help go around and prompt people x

I think thats where my train of thought is headed too.... Can I ask where you got your personalised one from?

Pretty sure my bridesmaids would give me a good slap if I asked them to spend all night dishing out wet wipes ?

If you can spare a couple of quid, i think its worth getting one for keepsake! Not worth spending a ton of money on and not essentially important but I really like the idea of looking back on the messages, even if its 10+ years from now!

I actually saw a really wonderful idea on a blog, with a time capsule where the wedding guests wrote a note for them to open on a certain date in the future (10-20 years plus i think), they included a bottle of champagne from their wedding to enjoy on the day they reopened the time capsule. They nailed the box shut when everyone's notes had been put in.

I would say that if you go for something unique and original then people can have fun signing it.

I had a traditional guest book at my wedding and everyone wrote in it BUT it's now in the loft and hasn't been taken out since the wedding really!!

Novel ideas will encourage guests to sign it.

I've had some great feedback from clients that have had a puzzle from me. EVERYONE signed it and needed no encouragement to sign it. I've had lot's of repeat orders from guests at the wedding who also loved it and wanted one for their wedding. They also look fab framed and hung on the wall so not banished to the attic like mine and 90% of others are.

Nutty, We got our guest book from NOTHS.

I'm sure it's me, but I can't think of anything I'd like less than a constant reminder of what people thought on our wedding day.... "Oi Nobber, under her thumb at last", or "I liked your first wife better".

I'm not saying this is what people will write, but they could, and you can;t stop them.... and there it is in all its jigsaw-puzzle glory!

I'm a also one of those people, who having been married before, know that after a few years constant reminders of our wedding day pall a bit. Lovely memories, but move on!!

Just wanted to say, that a guest book, regardless of what you have, is a lovely memory to have. I totally agree, that it WILL end up in the loft for years. BUT, I went up into the loft yesterday to get the Xmas decorations down, and low and behold, it was sticking out of my wedding box, along with my height of fashion wedding shoes from 1998 (now very very cringeworthy) I brought the book down and read through it again, FOURTEEN YEARS later, and it took me right back. My now married friends and their boyfriends (who they didn't end of marrying) relatives, that are no longer with us. It was lovely. The book had totally dated, everything about my 1998 wedding was now so dated, and the next time I will look in that box, will probably be another 14 years, by which time, my eldest will be 26 and possibly thinking about marriage himself, and I will get the box out again, because they are my memories that I can pass down to them. Yes, you will get cards of course, but nothing captures the thoughts of people there and then, than some kind of guest book, whether it be a wishing tree, paper book, signing sheet, anything, regardless of cost. One of my friends wrote, "Your smile lit up the room today, we felt honoured to be there". Whether you appreciate it on your wedding day or not, trust me, you will in 14 years time x
