Gutted - H didn't get the job

Clairy, 13 February, 2009 at 13:21 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

It went to the internal candidate ☹️

No need to respond, I am just really disappointed. I really thought he'd get it. Poor chicken.

Sorry to hear that Clairy, alarms bells rang for me when you mentioned the words 'internal' and 'candidate' - the feckers...............

I'm so sorry to hear this but an internal candidate always gets 1st dibs. Very annoying.

I hope he finds something equally as fantastic soon.

Arse and double arse. And what MrsSW said. What the hell were they doing wasting external candidates' time when they were interviewing in house as well? Grrr for you and your H. Hope you can have a good evening with plenty of spirit lifting booze.

That's what I was wondering. I'm surpised at them advertising externally while they had an internal canditate, already in the position. Wouldn't that usually be a ring-fenced jobby? I thought that public 'establishments' (for the want of a better word) such as schools only advertised externally when it couldn't be filled in house?

No, sadly it's very very common in teaching jobs for there to be at least one internal candidate. I think they have to advertise externally. Just appointing internally, with no wider ad, is not allowed.

Teaching interviews are different from most others anyway - you are there at least one whole day, with all the other candidates at the same time, and are then told who's got the job at the end of the day.

Thanks for the nice messages, he'll be upset but at least he's done a good job.

I don't know about schools but in medicine it's the opposite: you have to advertise externally for the job to be 'legal'. Probably to stop public sector cronyism/old boys network style recruitment.

I remember going for a job interview once. It was one of those full day interviews with sycometric testing, role plays etc.

There was an internal candidate there (she had temped in that role with the company for a year).

I later fouund out that she got the job, and she was told that she would get the job, but that they had to go though the external applicant procedure as part of company policy (I knew someone else working there who did some digging!)

Total waste of a day, and very annoying.

Thats sad for him, I hope something else is around the corner for him.

I thought all jobs had to be advertised externally. I work for a large charity and have gone for two promotions where I have interviewed against external candidates, I got one of the jobs and lost out on another.

Dunno about other jobs/companies, I was just answering MrsM's point. I've only ever worked in the public sector.

Deputy Headteachers and Headteachers have to be advertised nationally, but Assistant Headteachers (doing pretty much the same job!) can be appointed in house. If you can explain that to me you're doing well! Responsibility posts can be appointed in house, or externally advertised if there is a teaching vacancy to go with it. Teaching is a very peculiar profession, recruitment wise (and in many other ways, which I can vouch for as a teacher!). And at our school, historically the external candidate has had a far better chance of getting the post than an internal.

Sorry your H didn't get the job, hopefully the perfect one is out there somewhere.

Damn, my heart sank when I saw "internal candidate" as well. It is crazy the way it works in teaching, the number of useless interviews I've known people go on just to tick the equal opps box. Chin up, he'll get something. All my friends who despaired of ever getting out of The Sink are now happily promoted elsewhere ?
