Hi, any scottish brides want to offer help?!!

hummingbird, 23 November, 2011 at 10:48 Posted on Planning 0 15

Hi Everyone,

Im cheryl, im planning my big day on 12/12/12, only got engaged 12 days ago!!! I originally had my heart set on getting married in the mitchell library in Glasgow and then off to the Winnock hotel in Drymen.

I have a few problems : 1) The customer service at the hotel hasnt been as good as we expected so im kind of put off securing it, ( although on the flip side it's gorgeous and holds sentimental value plus god value for money... thoughts please?)

2) The photographers we have spoke to have warned us about the amount of daylight on that day so have said if we want "greenery" type pics that we need to have a small travel distance between ceremony venue and reception venue, in order to catch the light.

3) We want a hand fastening performed and the man that we are looking at do it does not have the licence to legally marry us therefore we would still have to have to sign with a registrar... for the registrar to come to the mitchell it will cost 300 ponds, for the man to do the ceremony it will cost 300 pounds, so we decided as we are on a somewhat tight budget we would go from the mitchell library to the registrars office to quickly sign, which will only cost 100 pounds, however that gain eats into our "daylight" time for photos Smiley sad

For those of you who have survived reading my rant ( thank you !!) anyone who has any suggestions of a nice small hotel venues where we could just do the whole thing there, ideally we want something from the tudor period, but not too fussed just dont want a big new modern swanky hotel. The ideal venue would have an open fire.

I am willing to sacrifice the Mitchell hotel for the ideal hotel to have all day.

Thanks again, any help offered willl be appreciated.

Not too sure about the locations i'm afraid but in terms of the ceremony would you consider having the 'legal bits' a few days before at the registry office? You could then have the ceremony you actually want on the day without as much rushing around. I know a few brides on here have done it for destination weddings and special locations without licenses.

    Hi hummingbird!,

I'm originally from Drymen! I'm actually getting married and having my evening reception at Culcreuch Castle in Fintry in December.

Could you bring the wedding forward to an earlier time to allow you travel time between the library and the hotel? Drymen is only about 30 - 40 minutes from the City (depending on the weather and who's driving)

The Buchanan Arms has a garden across the road from it, and you are also able to hold the whole ceremony there too. Both the Buchanan Arms and Culcreuch have wedding licenses which makes the registar a wee bit cheaper.

    Thanks to you both.

Mrs G.. it was something i have considered, i'm just unsure of how i would feel that what i had to put down on a legal bit of paper for my wedding date, wasn't the date we considered to be our date. However i guess it wouldn't really matter so much, i'd just have to suck it up haha

RKB.. only 3 weeks to go!!! and you are helping other people!! you must be a good person, think i'd be too selfish to be doing that! I think i will go and see the buchanan arms.

    thanks xx

Hello hummingbird, have you looked at Ross Priory on Loch Lomond? I am getting married there next year and I think it may fit the bill Smiley smile

Hi, I'm just outside Glasgow so not really up on my venues but couldn't you just have a humanist service? They can marry anywhere and will do anything you want so they shouldn't have a problem with hand fasting. I didn't have a humanist, wish I did though, so I may be wrong but I thought the benefit of the humanist option was that anything went and that the individual carries the license so venue isn't an issue.

With the daylight I'm not really sure what the photographer means because surely if one venue is losing the daylight by the time you get to the other location it will just be even darker?! I could understand it if they were saying another location is nicer for photographs or the light inside the venue is rubbish but I just don't quite get the light issue outside varying from one place to another.

A friend of mine got married at the Peoples Palace, would that be an option?

    xx

This, I was going to say a humanist should be able to do both a handfasting and legally marry you. We're having a humanist ceremony in the North of Scotland

My MOH is getting married at Buchanan Arms, it's beautiful.

Why not have the whole ceremony at the Winnock? We considered that, their package prices are very good.

*ETA, just noticed your comment on the poor customer service. That would put me off too. We had a similar experience with Crowne Plaza and it put us off altogether.

    Firstly... CONGRATULATIONS!

We're in a very similar situation with our ceremony, we're getting married on the day of our 12 year aniversary and having a humanist ceremony (not legally binding in england) we didn't want to do it all in one because it'll be a bit too long. so we're having our civil ceremony at 9.15am on the morning of our wedding. it'll just be the two of us and my brother and his sister. we'll meet up, have the shortest ceremony possible, not exchange rings or anything and go our seperate ways again, then we'll meet again at the end of the aisle for our real wedding!

its not what i imagined happening on the morning of my wedding but i think its dead exciting!! also i've always wanted to get married in St Georges Hall in Liverpool AND have a Humanist Ceremony too. The registry office in Liverpool is moving there so i get the best of both worlds!!

Good Luck, and welcome to hitched ?

    Congratulations and welcome.

I am getting married next year at the Sherbrooke Castle in Glasgow. We are having a humanist ceremony in the grounds of the hotel (fingers crossed). We loved the old staircase and the idea of not having to move for pics.

    Hey everyone,

thanks for all your help, after having a discussion with OH, we have phoned a humanist! The mitchell library called today to cancel our booking ( long story) so that gets rid of that headache, we are just going to have it all in the one place. We have decided for ease we would like a hotel as we can stay there the night, as can guests, and we have two children of our own so it will be easier on them if their wee beds are there when they are ready to crash.

Now to find the perfect hotel!!!

Congrats to Mrs- HFA!! and yes house for an art lover is gorgeous, you have picked a very special venue.

Re: about the light - my dude is a wedding photographer and he's constantly banging on about the light being super important for the pictures (if you are looking for them outside).

He has a wedding on the 28th of December - in order to get the daytime shots the couple want he's meeting them the day after and taking them then (as well as all the stuff during the previous day/night) - perhaps that might be an idea? Also means you get to dress up again!
