Hmmmmmmmmmmmm nice to know the Police are s busy!

Clairebecky, 21 October, 2008 at 13:11 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 31

I was just on the 'phone to H when I heard a siren in the background and he said he was getting 'pulled'. Couldn't think what for cos he wasn't speeding and was using a hands free kit.

A few minutes later he rang me back to telll me it was someone he knew who had pulled him over for a joke! He put his blue lights on and everything just to 's**t him up' apparently!

Surely they're not meant to go around pulling people just for fun - I thought the Police were always telling us how over-stretched and under-resourced they are? Hey ho.?

Me and my friend were a bit worse for wear one night in the city centre when i a police car pulled up and asked us if we had seen a man running past in womans clothing! turned out to be the worst chat up line ever but at least we saved £25 on a taxi, they took us home, blue lights flashing along the motorway and everything. then came up for coffee and left us a rather cheesy letter on the car windscreen the next morning looking for a couple of dates! so its not just your local police who have nothing better to do!!

Tricky one because on the one hand, yes, they should of course be busy but on the other, well, the police do a really, really hard job and it'snot like he was using a police helicopter for a lift home or anything, so I would cut him some slack

I think it's an excellent joke, to be honest ?.

( Mind you, I'm also a big fan of the 'keep driving off a tiny bit when someone's trying to get in the car' joke - that is NEVER not funny ?!)

Not slagging them off in the slightest, in fact my H2B just started his police training last monday, and they do do a sterling job, everyone has to have bit of fun at work every now and then, its just funny when its the strong arm of the law having a laugh!!

Actually despite the fact I sound really prissy ? I think thats incredibly unprofessional and a total abuse of power. I would be really pissed off.

I get pissed off when a friend of ours flashes his police badge to get free entry to clubs. Hes in the bloody transport police- whats he going to do, check tickets?

Sorry, I'm another who finds this quite amusing. Policemen are allowed a little fun too surely, as long as it's not at the expense of more serious work. The coppers who pop into Tesco late at night for supplies when I'm shopping at the end of an evening shift are often in an ebullient mode and I like to see them having a laugh and a joke with those around them. Presumably they thought your H would see the funny side?

It's not that I can't see the funny side, but it's not even a bloke my H knows really well, it's only a vague acquaintance. It just seems, as someone else said, rather unprofessional!

Well, yes, technically it is, but he's not exactly gaining a lot form it, other than a laugh, is he? It's not like he is bullying someone, out to upset anyone, further than a quick joke

I suppose that does make it a bit more strange that it's not actually a friend... weirdo!

Jeez, I'm sure he wouldn't have done it had he been on his way to a call or something.

I also don't think it's an abuse of power. MrPod does it to his sister and aunt when he sees them. He doesn't come home roaring like a lion look at me MrPowerful. Sometimes he justs come homes laughing, as does his aunt or sister if they call me to tell me.

It's people having a laugh at work, no different in principal to office based jokes and something I'm sure most police wouldn't do to the detriment of their actual work.

Why would an aquaintance know his car? That's a bit freaky tbh.

I'd prob be pissed off if someone did it to me, but only because I've never been pulled over and it would terrify me until I realised who they were. I'm a wuss.

My cousin used to think it was funny to do the same when a passenger was trying to get out of the car, until the day he ran over my foot as I attempted to leave the back seat! The joke was on him after that, especially as I was on crutches for a few weeks until my ankle healed.

It was a childish game which was fun at the time, he'd drop us off at school and we had to scramble out without the car stopping.

What Lois said. I was involved in an accident last night (as a witness, rescuer and 999 caller) and I bloody well take my hat off to the police- they do a fantastic job in often horrendous circumstances and while I appreciate it was naughty of them to give your H a fright, I don't grudge them a little harmless light relief.

the pay back for the free entry thing though is if a fight breaks out, the bobbies are expected to wade in. so the managers like to encourage off duty officers to go in their clubs and offer this 'perk.' when i go out with my police mates we get into some clubs free too.

you honestly get pissed off that your mate gets to save a tenner or something? it's not like they get many other perks...

well, relatively speaking, the police pension is excellent

as for overtime being a perk, most people in the private sector do overtime anyway, and get sod all ?

I also wouldn't find it funny. Office jokes and banter are one thing but there aren't many 'jokes' i play in the office that could frighten members of the public. As a new driver, I'd find it really scary to be pulled over - and if it turned out to be a 'mate' who'd done it, i'd be really hacked off.

Wouldn't be very funny if a fire engine pulled up outside your house with lights and siren going and fire fighers approached your house. Maybe just on the way back from a call so no resources were wasted. I don't think many people would find that funny.

Sure, he knew the guy - but the person that was pulled over didn't realise this until the 'joke' was over. It's the siren and flashing lights and 'oh god, what have i done?' feeling that would frighten me - long before i realised it was an aquaintance.

well quite. would have been a bit crap had he known it was his mate all along ?

and do people really get so scared of blue lights? okay, i may get a real feeling of impending doom if i was made to stop, but i wouldn't find it frightening...

I've been pulled twice and crapped myself both times!!! The first time I was about 18 and I'd had my car broken into a few days before and the lock had been pulled out so I had to start the car with a screw driver which would have taken some explaining. The second time I was breathalised because they said I was driving irratically - the reason I was driving irratically is because it was down a dark country lane in the middle of the night and a car was following me right up my bumper - I was scared I was going to be mugged or something until the car put on it's blue light - I hadn't realised it was a Police car! In actual fact I was pregnant so definitely not over the limit, though H was wasted and wearing reindeer antlers in the passenger seat cos we'd been to his works xmas party!?

The guy who pulled H knew the make and model of his car but not his reg so just took a guess that it was him. He could have inadvertantly pulled over some totally innocent person who he didn't know and would have had to make up an excuse for pulling them! I'm not bothered about them giving H a scare, that I actually found quite funny, but I do still think it's an innapropriate use of Police time and resources and could have had some unintended consequences if he'd accidentally pulled the wrong person!
