We ended up with a week in Sri Lanka and a week in the Maldives for the same reason - Mr C thought he would hate it... as it turns out once we got there he wished we had booked 10 days in Kuramathi not just 7... it is truly stunning and a fair bit to do if you go to a slightly larger island.

    This was my honeymoon report...

    Coldell1981 -

We've just booked the Maldives for our honeymoon, I was worried it was going to cost a fortune, and when I gave the agent our budget, I was pleasently surprised when he came back with a 10 day holiday at Kuramathi (same as Mrs C) and he managed to get it in at £1500 under what I said our top budget was.

I think you'll be pleasently surprised for what you can get with that money with a bit of shopping around.

Give me a shout if you want any help !

We went to Singapore/Bali/Malaysia - enough of a mix of beaches/restaurants/cultural activities to please us, but unfortunately outside your budget (at least, for the hotels we stayed at). We are looking at Thailand for our next holiday and you could easily get two weeks in a beach getaway in a buzzy area for £4K.

The Maldives looks beautiful but agree, maybe slightly claustrophobic. And going to a bigger resort means more to do but less Robinson Crusoe.

Have you considered an beach getaway in a slightly more "cultured" island/place? By "cultured", I mean a bigger place with a few towns/parks etc, not saying that the Maldives is backwards or anything. Thailand (as above)? Mauritius? Cape Verde islands? Gambia?

We went to Kuala Lumpur and Bali and it was tres amazing........ B U T........ I preferred the Maldives where we had a holiday a few years before. We worried about what to do there but we struggled to find the time to do everything we wanted to!

we stayed in Kuredu a very remote, small island in a water bungalow. We scuba dived (for the first time here!) snorkelled, wind surfed, went night fishing, sunset catamaran, dolphin spotting!

Bali is beautiful, but the second place we stayed was Sanur, very beautiful beaches and lovely food and people, but we found it a tad commercial. It's treated like the Balerics for Australians and New Zealanders.

One thing I would highly recommend is if you can work your budget out to include a small city trip as part of your break, do it! i'd never done a multi stop holiday before and I loved it!

    * note to self, do my honeymoon report Smiley smile

If they have done it right then it really doesn't feel like that. Ours was a fairly big island (it had a football pitch somewhere!) but definitely did not feel like that at all and even in peak season it didn't feel busy at all.

I think you have to enjoy things like snorkelling, scuba diving, boat trips etc. to fully enjoy the Maldives. The underwater world is amazing.

There was also entertainment in the evenings if you wanted it, one night we saw a DJ, another was a live singer, another night was a movie on the beach...

Another Kuramathi honeymooner her! Our budget for honeymoon was £3k but we went over slightly in order to get the Select Al option as we felt this would save us money in the long run. We are only going for 9 nights though but due to work and the budget we couldn't go for any longer. I'm sure you could get 2weeks for £4k easily, including the select al.

We booked with the same company Mrs C did, its called tropical warehouse.

I just checked Kuoni's website for the 20th August (worked it out from your ticker before you posted) and got Maldives B&B offers showing for £2,500 - £6,000 for 14 nights. If you work out which islands you like and give the Tropical Warehouse a call I am certain that they would be able to get you a fab deal on AI for 10/14 nights within budget... They are really nice.

We managed to get free seaplane flights when we booked ours and TW were already £500 cheaper than booking direct with Kuoni. We also only had a basic Beach Villa which tbh was perfect.

And don't be afraid to pitch two travel agents off against each other!

Another travel agent to try - Kenwood Travel, at least £300 cheaper than Kuoni for exactly the same flight/hotel/dates (for my recent holiday meanderings).

We are going to the Maldives. The island we picked was Meeru, two weeks today and that's where we will be! We spent around £3.5k for a weeks all inclusive in a water villa. Meeru is meant to be one of the bigger islands. I'm not worried about getting bored. We just wanted a week's relaxation to get over the stresses of the wedding!

We've not gone on honeymoon yet but are nearly decided - Dubai/Sechelles (we wanted city/adventure followed by relaxation)

I went to Thailand a few years back - was amazing. Bangkok was fab and the islands are paradise - the great thing with Thailand is your money goes further when you are there, amazing food for not much cost and same with the hotels.

    Good luck!
