how do I lose the belly fat?

nemi, 28 June, 2011 at 20:45 Posted on Beauty & Wellbeing 0 24

Hi everyone.

I have 10 months til my wedding and I'm determined to have a flat (or at least semi-flat) tummy for it.

I have cut down on junk food and been eating more fruit and veg and I have been doing zumba, swimming and cycling.

I was sure this would work, but after about 4 months it hasn't [:'(]

All that has happened is that my arm and leg muscles have become all hard and now look all chunky and if anything my stomach looks bigger than before.

Eeeek! What can I do to lose the flab?

Please help

Sit-ups, sit-ups, and more sit-ups. Try to do 20 a day, at any point in the day, just aim for 20 every day and after a few weeks you will start to see a difference.

Also, not sure if you drink much in the way of fizzy juice, be it full fat, diet, or even just soda water. My friends mum was quite slim but had a big belly (she was asked when she was due a couple of times ?) eventually she went to the doc and he told her to stop drinking anything fizzy...a few weeks later bye bye belly - I guess bubbles just don't agree with some people.

Let me know how you get on.

    HTH, x

I agree with Mellow_Yellow, fizzy pop is the worst for bellys....another suggestion, try taking peppermint tablets, just incase you have a slight water retention/bloating...they work wonders.

Sit ups are a great target exercise but also using a cross trainer targets the waistline...i hear Zumba, swimming & cycling are very hard on thighs & arms, so that maybe the reason why you've built a lot of muscle in these areas....when you swim do you swim fast?! i sometimes find going at a slow pace is better because your toning not gaining muscle!

Keep us posted, it'll be interesting to see how you get on!!

I know I wouldnt be that happy with 0.5in over a year if I had been trying!

I think I read somewhere that the best thing for belly fat is low intensity exercise over longer periods of time eg lots of walking, but I have to say when I'm pushed for time I cant see how going for a run isn't better! I have found jogging has really helped - my belly was my biggest problem area- jogging has brought it down a lot - I'm now just struggling with the last inch or so- sit ups and other abs exercises do seem to be doing the trick- over 0.5in in 2 weeks (much better than a year I think!!)

Also just to say- you seem like you're not measuring- especially if other areas of your body are changing shape around your belly it would give you a much more objective view if you measure your waist- I do both natural waist (1-2in above belly button) and around the line at the belly button- do it at the same time of day, I know I fluctuate at least 0.5in between morning and evening.

I'm really hoping I can keep the numbers ticking down!!

I'm also having the same problem, I'm getting married next may and have put myself on a strict as strict can be diet. I'm 12 stone at the moment, I gained 2 stone after having my son 12 month's ago and have found it difficult to shift. I tried running but I just couldn't hack the pace, so I recently purchased a cross trainer and in a few day's i'm feeling slightly fitter if NOT lighter. Just hope it works in the long run. I'm also swimming twice a week, so something better shift soon!

If you've got water retention/bloating then you need to drink more water! and to convert the excess fat into lean muscle, you need to eat more lean protein. I do Pilates and so I can agree with post about it toning the stomach area - basically pilates is about strengthening the core muscles. If you'd like any more advice please pm me!

Belly fat is the hardest to shift and the easiest to gain!!

While sit ups may feel like your working away the fat its impossible to 'zone burn fat'. this simply means because you are working the muscles in that area it doesnt mean you burn the calories from that area! Unless of course you take on thermobolic training which is what body builders do and its not for the faint hearted! sit ups will simply tone the muscle under the fat! so you probably do already have a six pack of toned ab muscles there!

The old wives tale of low intensity exercise for long period of time (aerobic training) is out of the arc!

Im a firm believer in high intensity for short bursts! mixing it up so for example a 40 sec sprint on a bike, followed by 15 burpees straight into a squat and press - then u get a minute rest! yes you will feel like a lemon but who cares if it works! I hired a PT after having my son and now im a pt myself i still train with him now and again!

its not everyones style but if u have tried everything else what have u got to loose?

    good luck!

Its pretty impossible to loose weight from a target area, you need to burn fat all over. My by far favourite is kettlebells (as someone previous said) They hit all teh major muscle groups and its a great all over body workout. Burns double the calories in the same time compared to spin, running and many other exercises. I started PT with kettlebells 6 weeks after I had my son - I did one circuit class and one PT a week with my H (he is a martial art/fitness/kb instructor) and within 2 months I had lost all the baby weight (about a stone) and felt the fittest I had in my life. I wasnt even dieting, just being sensible. I couldnt really diet as I was bfing and constantly hungry!

Since I have come back to work I just dont have the time to get to my H's classes now and I am also blaming the weight gain on the Mirena I had fitted at the start of the year. My plan is healthy eating again and trying to get to one class a week - will be circuits but built around kb's. I have also got my H to bring a kb home so that I can train in the house when the kids are in bed.

First thing you have to sort out is your diet. Cut out the following if you are really serious about getting in shape. It will be tough and the cravings will kick in hard after a week, but you want to get in that dress, right?

Processed foods: junk, tinned, packets. You know the stuff!

Starchy carbs: bread, pasta, pastries, white potatoes, rice, cereals

alcohol: slows down your metabolism by upto 38% and adds a huge amount of calories

caffeine: caused energy spikes and sugar cravings

    refined sugar: sweets, chocolate, etc

When it comes to the love handles it's 60% diet and 40% exercise!

Instead eat lean meats, fish, fruit and veg. Plus, drink only water or herbal teas.

Exercise wise, slow boring cardio isn't very good for fat loss. Instead you should try high intensity exercise that burns calories during and after the exercise. This is called the afterburn effect! The exercise doesn't have to be long when you exercise hard.

    Hope this helps!

    Couldn't agree more.

Low intensity gets your body used to not working, and if anything sends your metabolism the wrong way. You can target your muscles but you can't target losing fat. If you work out hard on your biggest core muscles then the rebuilding process will increase your metabolism as you rest, feeding on your fat. The benefits of that is you only have to do about 20 minutes every couple of days! I think the world is getting wise to these low intensity and targeting myths...

It was giving up the bread, alcohol and fizzy drinks that helped me get into a position where I could actually start to see the results of my tummy toning exercises. I use Sparkpeople.co.uk to track my weight, food intake and exercise. Their Core Strengthening exercises have worked really well and I can now see a little four pack (six would be too much to ask for!!) starting to emerge.

I have lost 22lb by using the site as it has kept me really motivated - though I have invested in free weights and a treadmill to allow me to train at home whilst the kids are eating/ sleeping.

    Hope this helps.

    1. Drink plenty of water. Our body needs a lot of water so give in to water. Water is not just way to flush out toxin but if you have more water in your body you will generally feel healthier and fitter. This it self will discourage any tendency to gorge. The best thing about water is that is has no calories at all. 2. Start your day with a glass of water. As soon as you wake up, gulp down a glass of cool water. It’s a wonderful way to start you day and you only need a lesser quantity of your breakfast drink after that. A glass of water lets out all your digestive juices and sort of lubricates the insides of your body. You may have your morning cup of tea but have it after a glass of water. It is good for you. 3. Drink a glass of water before you start the meal. Water naturally needs some space so that you feel fuller without actually having to stuff yourself. 4. Have another glass of water while you are having the meal. Again this is another great how to lose weight fast super tip and a way of making yourself full, another great weight loss tips, so that you can actually rise from the table eating less but feeling full just the same. Instead of drinking it one gulp, take sips after each morsel. It will help the food to settle faster so that you get that feeling that you are full faster. SIDENOTE: Water is such a remarkable thing, but seldom do we give it the credit that it deserves. Did you know that over 66% of your body weight is nothing but water’ It’s amazing! Water also plays a vital role in weight control, which is why I donated so much space to it, above. 5. Stay away from sweetened bottle drinks, especially sodas. Hey all those colas and fizzy drinks are sweetened with sugar and sugar means calories. The more you can cut out on these sweetened bottle drinks, the better for you. So if you must drink sodas, then stick to diet sodas. how to burn stomach fat
