How do you take your money on holiday?

*Mini*, 17 September, 2012 at 18:34 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 29

We are off next week (!) and are a but undecided what to do. We are going on a cheap and cheerful all inclusive to Turkey so wont need huge amounts of spending money but we will probably want to go on a few trips etc.

MrMini says we should just withdraw cash when we are there but I always have a fear that wont work, plus you get charges for using your debit card. MrMini has a credit card but again I dont think thats the way to go.

Has anyone had any use of one of those pre pay mastercards? Post Office do them but I am not sure if they are any good.

Lastly, do people even still use travelers cheques? I have taken them on holiday in the past so wondered if they were still useable.

WWYD?

We normally take cash and leave it in the safe. If it's a long holiday we will probably take half what we think we will need and withdraw the rest out there later.

Probably not the best plan but it works for us!

We normally take cash and leave it the safe, just take a little out with us each day.

Do you plan to leave and to tours etc? As it's all inclusive, you won't need much at all!!

We got given a pre paid master card thingie as a wedding pressie. Id never seen one before but it is just like the new gift voucher cards. one of you will have to sign the back like a credit card so just make sure that person keeps it and are there when you want to use it (yep, my H signed it then I took it out to use! Doh!)

I usually take a couple of hundred cash and withdraw more out there when/if needed.

Never take anything, apart from the odd handful of Euros we usually have lying around if appropriate. Cash machine in airport, the further withdrawals as and when. Never get more than a couple of days worth at a time. We always use Boy's credit card as free cash withdrawals abroad.

I don't think you are insured for more than 500 in cash so thats the maximum we take then use our card abroad.

I worry that too, well take it but I like to have the money there rather than rely on it and it not working!

I always take more than one card as even when I have notified the bank they have still stopped the damn card. Make sure you do tell your beank that you are going and how long you will be gone. I always put shopping on credit cards and find the exchange rate pretty favourable, draw cash out of machines and take cash. But we usually go to the USA

When we went to Australia last month we took a cash passport card plus a few hundred dollars. The card was great, it meant we didn't have to carry so much cash around with us but we didn't have to worry about being charged to withdraw cash. There's no charges on the card unless you keep it and don't use it for longer than a year so we just cancelled it when we got back.

You should be able to pay for most trips using your card? I'd take some readies and put in the safe.

If it was down to H, we'd take all cash ?

One tip - go to your bank before your holiday and let them know that you are going abroad and where too they can then pput a note on the system which means your card will work aborad with no problems.

i tend to take some cash and the rest travellers cheques

We took cash and a credit card and tried to use the credit card wherever they accepted it. Debit cards do work but they'll charge you. I think Nationwide charge the least so if you have an account with them and really need to take money out that would be the best option.

When we went to turkey we took the cash. We had some sterling and some lira and we were fine, we came home with money left.

When we went to Egypt we took some cash but took the rest out from ATM's and one evening we used our last 20egyptian pounds to get a cab into town for dinner. Unfortunately I tried to take money out and the cash point wo0uldnt let me and I couldnt get through to the bank. We had to call the hotel to pick us up and have dinner back there and charge it to the hotel. I managed to call the bank the next day and sort it but it scarred me!!

Yup, this is what we do. Also probably not the best thing to do, but I get paid when we're out there.

We take a pre-paid card. Load it with whatever amount before your holibobs and then use as per a normal debit card whilst away.

If we plan to spend under £500 then we take cash in the currency of where we are going up to this amount.

Anything more then we take travellers cheques in the currency of where we are going, but some cash sterling as back up in case we run out.

ETA: why does nobody use travellers cheques?

Cards easier and more widely accepted, less risk for retailer, charge to cash.

I have not once had any problem with a debit or credit card on holibobs.

See, I just always cash my cheques in the hotel as and when I need them, have never been charged to do so, and then spend the cash freely.

So what advantage is this providing you with, rather than just withdrawing cash when you need it? It's a lot more effort.

I quite like having travellers cheques if we are planning expensive trips, as in the past I've just used them directly to pay for it with the rep with no problems and no need to exchange them for cash. We were in Egypt, no cash machine in the hotel and a good distance from the centre of town to get one. I never 100% trust my card to work also, regardless of notifying my bank etc. I like having the cash in my hand or travellers cheques, although I agree they are on the way out!

If cheques go missing you can phone up and cancel them and have them reissued, but then I suppose you could probably do the same with a card, eh?

I have never had a bank account which wouldn't charge me for withdrawing cash abroad, andnever got around to looking at whether you have to pay extra, or a fee, for those prepaid cards?

I don't like being at the liberty of the exchange rate of the day, we often wait for a good exchange rate for weeks or even months leading up to a big holiday.

It is a massive plus to have one if you are taking this approach! Although I DO use my fee-heavy debit card anyway!

And I know it sounds really frivolous but we're too lazy to worry about the odd £2 here or there in charges, the slightly-less-good-than-yesterday exchange rates.

Same. I never get a statement after I've returned from holiday where I've got charged so much that it's made me bother looking into some other way..

I'm a Delboy too- have always used cash and keep it on me. I don't mind using cards in Europe and have done, but a 2 week holiday further afield and I'll make sure I have enough cash- can't be bothered piddling around every couple of days changing money/cheques etc! Try to go all inclusive now so at least food/drinks are already paid for.
