How far do you have to travel for decent shops?

Mrs Magic, 27 April, 2008 at 16:41 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 32

Butchers, greengrocers etc.

I've lived her for 4 years now and have finally just found a butcher that I love. He is 5.5 miles away and I'm trying to go once a week. There is a great little greengrocers a few doors along so I've started going there too. The only other decent greengrocers I've found is a farm shop 4.5 miles away which although sell some of their own produce, they don't sell everything I'm looking for.

When I think about it, 40 miles a month for meat and veg seems quite a lot. How far do you have to go for decent produce?

It's about 200m to our local High St where we've got everything we need. It's great having a Waitrose so close by too! ?

    ? That's so not fair.

Our local supermarkets consist of (in increasing distances up to 3 miles in different directions) Lidl, Aldi, Farmfoods, small Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda and a big Tesco.

I was in Waitrose for the first time last week in London Town and it looks fab. I want to live in London. ?

There's lot of supermarkets within 1 or 2 miles, but for nicer bits I tend to go to the grocer's shop in the village where my son goes to school, about 5 miles away. They have a fruit/veg shop and a butchers/deli that sells nice things - it's all owned by 1 person but they've expanded into 2 shops.

Surely you don't want to live in London more than Lothian? ??

Even though I live very centrally, there's not a great selection within walking distance. There's a great butcher but not a great choice for fruit and veg. This place is fabby though. ?

10 mile round trip to a butcher or supermarket. Supermarket is Somerfield. Substandard produce at over inflated prices as there is no competition. No greengrocers or fishmonger for 30 plus miles I'd guess? It's a nightmare. Have been on an 80 mile round trip today just to get a decent shop at the nearest supermarket (Asda).

There's a greengrocers in town but I've never been in. The butchers used to be fab but it's closed now. It's walking distance to aldi, lidl and somerfield too.
Apart from that the town centre is full of takeaways and closed down shops.

I live 10 minutes from the trafford centre though so it's not all bad!

We have a lot of shops really close, including a wiatrose
but we decide to get a veg box delivered (from a few miles away), as it keeps us out of the shops and we spend a lot less because of that
meat's not an issue as we buy it so rarely, and waitrose is within walking distance

Sainsburys is 11 miles away, waitrose 10 miles away, tescos 13 miles away, the farm we go to is 30 miles away but about 2 miles from Mr Benas work so i send him in his lunch break as too far to go just for meat. we ( as in he ?)go once a month if that and freeze most of it. eggs have to go down the garden to visit the girls.

veg we either go to market 11 miles away or 22 miles away but we are growing absolutely tons this year. already cropping spinach, salad and pak choi.

I tend to go to a supermarket on the way home from work to cut down mileage.

no takeaways nearby, have to drive 9 or 11 miles each way for that.

I'd love to cut out supermarket shopping though, we've bought half a lamb before on the web which was much better value and happy meat. I do like to see exactly where meat is farmed.

can you tell we're quite in the sticks here?

I travel quite a long way.

The farm shop is around 15 miles away and the Chicken Farm is about 20 miles. The butchers is close, about 2 miles, ditto Waitrose.

I normally team the Chicken Farm and Farmshop with seeing my Mom though so it's en route.

Our area is shocking for decent food produce. The nearest good farm shop is 18 miles away. We did go for a few weeks, but the petrol on top of the higher prices was just crazy.
There are farm shops more locally, but one sells dutch tomatoes and chinese garlic and pork with more water in than you'd believe, all after claiming to do none of these things ☹️!]
There is an Iceland over the road though ?

My butchers are 5 mins walk away, still haven't found a decent green grocer in town. Morrison's is spitting distance, though I prefer to go to ASDA which is either 1 mile in 1 direction or 4 in the other. There are also a couple of Somerfeilds nearby too.

We have a lovely butchers and a pretty decent bakery within half a mile of home. I wouldn't know about greengrocers, I'm afraid I'm a Tesco girl all the way (which is also about half a mile). We've recently signed up for a milk delivery though and we're also investigating veg boxes (got an abel and cole leaflet through the door, but not sure they're the best option). Is it bad that I don't know where our takeaway is, because they always deliver?!

Live within 6 miles of Birmingham city centre though so that probably helps.

There's a huge Asda about 1 mile away and a Tesco which is 4 miles away. We used to have a pretty decent range of shops in the town centre, but Asda put paid to that , and now it's full of food place.

We have 3 chinese takeaways, plus a restaurant. We also have an Italian restaurant, a KFC, 2 pizza places (and a Domino's will be opening shortly), there's a Polish cafe and an Indian takeaway...

My closest shop is a corner shop about a minute's walk away, but it's rubbish. Within easy walking distance I have a smattering of better corner shops, a crap fruit and veg place, a pretty rubbish Co-op, two good delis and a farmers' market on Saturdays. Within a short bus ride I have a not-so-good fishmonger and a Sainsbuggers; longer bus ride (20 minutes?) gets me to a better fishmonger and a butcher; four or so tube stops away there's a couple of excellent butchers, fishmongers, a good organic shop and a Waitrose. Mustn't grumble really ?

We have a great village shop, fresh bread each day etc. We have a milkman, butcher and fishmonger who all call each week and the farm shop is 2 mins away. Within 5 miles I have a chicken supplier, venison farm, goat farmer (cheese and meat) and 2 smoke houses. We a blessed with great food producers in Cornwall. We also have a small Tesco 6 miles away.

We have a fantastic butchers a few streets away, the queue is always out of the door.
We go to a farm shop about 5 minutes drive away for fruit, eggs, veg and milk quite cheap as well.

I live 1 mile out of the town centre so we have morrisions, sainsburys, asda, lidl, netto, aldi oh and m &s pretty close by.The tesco we use it 10 minutes drive away at the reebok so we only go there once a week.

About 10 mins walk to the local high street which has a good butcher, a fishmonger and greengrocer as one, a not-quite-so-good but cheaper greengrocer with good fresh herbs and rarer fruit and veg, 2 chain bakers and a swiss baker (expensive)

A relatively small Tesco is about 3 mins walk the other way, but we tend to travel to the Waitrose, which is 10 mins drive away, once a month, as it is such a pleasure. ?

The farmshops nearby aren't that good unless you like potatoes and posh, overpriced biscuits and pickles.

Our closest supermarkets are about 15 miles away, but we have a good local butcher and farm shop nearby so use those for a lot of things then stop in at the supermarket on the way home from work for stuff like loo roll and tinned stuff etc.

I live about half a mile from a Morrisons. Within a 4 mile radius we also have a Sainburys, Asda and a small Somerfield. Butchers and fruit/veg shops are around 3 miles away so not to bad I suppose.

Within a three-minute walk we have a fab butcher's shop and a decent greengrocer's. We have a large-ish Co-op but it's rubbish - over-priced and under-stocked. It has just undergone a £350,000 refurbishment which, amongst other things, has resulted in three tills instead of four so even longer queues. There's a Tesco Express which is better but sadly only tiny. Overall though, we have most things within walking distance so are lucky.

I seem to be surrounded by large supermarkets.
For a regular butchers (which doesn't sell fillet steak I found!) and fruit shop, I'd say a couple of miles, but for a decent one, probably over 5 miles.
Although there is a farm shop not far from where I work which I really need to check out.
