How much do you know about your OH's job?

I notice on here quite a bit how someone mentions that their OH does some sort of job relevant to the topic and then gives an opinion/recounts a story based on their OH's job.

Now my OH has a very specialised and quite secret job so it's not something that I can spout about on here but I often feel woefully poorly informed as to what he actually does. Some of you seem to be very clued up on a job quite diverse from your own.

So, do you know as much about it as would seem from comments on here, Or is it a case of you knowing a few facts/stories which you then use in a relevant topic?

(I do appreciate that we have conversations with our partners but I find that OH and I speak about the people we work with/one off stories rather than going into the minutiae of procedures which it does seem that some hitchers do)

Am in the police and OH is a nurse, we know quite a lot about each other's jobs. We talk about it loads - I think we're bith genuinely interested so will ask loads of questions. Plus I often come across nurses and she often comes across police officers at work (she's in a&e at the moment) so we'll often share stories about that as well.

Hmmm, not much. I know he is Head of Product Management for an IT company which specialises in accounting systems for private schools. I think that entails playing on your iPhone a lot and having long lunches.

Not much, I know that he is a consultant for a medical research company and he studies drug trends in medical areas in Europe. I should know more as we met when I worked for the same company (obviously I was in a different department).

Pretty well as I used to be his boss ? We've both moved on since then but work in the same industry. My last job was pretty sensitive and full of stuff I couldn't talk about but he'd still have a good idea of what I did day to day as it's pretty much the same job applied to a different environment.

He's a lawyer and I know next to nothing about the law, but I do know more than your average Joe about the immigration process in this country, visas, asylum seekers, appeals and judicial reviews based on the human rights act. Also have to pretend I know what he's talking about when he's talking about why certain people from certain countries get asylum over others - ie which countries are currently torturing people, having civil wars, etc etc.

Loads - we work for the same company (guess how we met!!) He is Head of Development in the Healthcare IT industry and I am Head of Marketing. Different departments but our work crosses over frequently and we often spend time at home talking about work ...we are sad!

I know he works for Norwich Union - oops, no sorry AVIVA. I know he goes to lots of meetings.

I was very proud of myself just now when I told him I knew he worked in CE (nope, don't know what it means) to be told that his department's name has been changed to COOT (and again, no idea what that means)

He knows a lot about what I do partly because it kind of rules our life and also because he has sat and watched me at work. He did get a shock when we first started going out and saw the size of the manuals I have to lug around.

I know more than I need to and want [curse torchwood] to!! (and do quote him on here - although I hope I remember the caveat that it's him not me that knows the stuff!)

I do also always ask him the questions that are asked on here - honest! (he's in Building Control fwiw)

H and I are both project managers in the civil service. He is a grade above me as he started 5 years ago and I only joined about a year ago. although we do the same job, the projects we work on are wildly different, but its good to have someone to ask about stuff.

I know a lot one way or another. He works in IT for the same company that I work for (though I'm Customer Relations). so know what projects he's working on, what needs doing etc and best of all he seems to know all of the office gossip, despite being tucked away like the IT crowd are.

Similarly to LTP, I understand how the industry works, but I don't understand much at all about his 'creative process' (god that sounds pretentious ?). I know quite alot about music in general (it's how we met) - and I know more than him in some areas - but there are huge gaps in my jazz knowledge and the way he can improvise at speed over incredibly complex chords and hear harmony instantly passes me by completely, even though I understand some of the basic theory.

I have been told off on here for mentioning stuff I know from him, but I don't see why really. I have to listen to him teach lessons in the room next door for hours on end, so it's inevitable I pick up a bit. I also used to teach in a music school so often give him tips on teaching techniques and strategies to explain things to kids so they understand.

He loves to ask me about work but I hate talking about it at home. I only tend to bring it up if it's something emotional and I need the support. He has been with me since before I went to Uni though and has an inquisitve and scientific brain so he has picked up quite a lot of knowledge along the way. He also makes a great fake patient for exam practice - he does a good schizophrenic impression! He also knows a fair bit about the politics of the NHS as he has to put up with my ranting ?

I don't know too much about my H's work. I think he tries to break websites and stuff like that. he's a QA Engineer. He's told me about it but it's so gaddamn boring that it goes in one ear and out of the other.

I'm a bank manager and I'm sure he think my job is just about sitting around and counting money, or telling people off for exceeding their overdraft limits. Sadly thre's a bit more to it than that. I'm currently on Maternity Leave so my day to day job is changing nappies, singing "wheels on the bus" and attending various baby activities. He gets chapter and verse about that when he gets home, mainly because I'm so glad to have someone to talk to who'll talk back and not vomit on me.

I know everything about his work as we're partners in the restaurant. However, he knows practically nothing about what I do 9-5 as the business takes precendence in our house and we have no time to talk about what I do, actually, I don't think he's that interested! I do come home and moan about stuff and he does glaze over....

All I know is that he's an electronics engineer (but now called Principal Designer) and designs analogue circuits. That's it. He never really discusses his work with me, and I refer to it as 'lectrickery'. He's always asks me stuff related to my work (I am in healthcare) but I'm not sure he knows what I actually do.

Mr Cee is a Computer Games Programmer making war based role playing games his latest game he worked on was at no1 in the PC Games charts Empire Total War. I am not to sure what he is working on now, i think it might be an expansion pack for this game.

He doesn't tend to tell me that much sometimes games are a secret before release, I'm not to sure who he thinks I will tell anyway! As far as I can work out they don't appear to do much work always having guitar hero tornaments etc!

Quite a bit, in that I proof-read all his books and articles (he's a historian). He does the same for mine. I also know quite a lot about the academic politics side of things, since we use each other as a sounding-board for when problems come up/plans for projects/general ranting and bit.ching etc. I'm also in academia (different subject) so although we don't know a huge amount about the details of each other's research since we don't have all the background, we're quite able to understand what the other does. We also help each other with articles in different languages, since we each speak languages the other doesn't. It's been a bit of a tricky time for us both at work recently and I don't know what I would have done if I couldn't rant about it at home. I also know lots of academic couples in the same field - I often wonder if they discuss their subjects at home!

Mr WT is an IT Analyst / Engineer, thats about all I know. He deals with software and hardware, pulls stuff apart, rebuilds stuff and sorts out IT problems in various Police stations / Police HQ. I have no interest in the ins and outs of it all as it goes straight over my head!

I think Mr WtThas an idea as to what I do, but if asked he would probably reply along the lines of 'maps, reports, site visits all over the place and other civil service gumph' lol

Dr shoes gets to design, build and play with big lasers or at least thats what he is trained for and has done in previous jobs, his current job isnt working out as well as he hoped (only been there a couple of months) and is now looking round for something else

the problem with being too specialised like we both are is there is never a job for each of us in the same place.....

I know H works for a tier 1 investment bank and that he HATES it with a passion. It all sound very boring frankly and i dont really care about any of it. And I also know that in 3 weeks he is starting at a new job at a different investment bank which he is really excited about. I know he pays all the bills and so I dont have to. Thats about it and thats enough for me. ?

I know exactly what he does, although since being promoted it's more technical and I have to nod and pretend I know alot more than I do! I always ask what he's done each day and he is often working from home on the weekend so I pick up quite a bit from that.

He's a wind turbine fault analyst and fixer of stuff. He doesn't actually know his exact job title ?

I'm a self employed retailer, so he gets to help me out more than he really would like to.

There seem like a lot of very interesting OH's here!...you should all be very proud ?

Mine is a bit of Jack of all (and VERY good at it all unlike the original phrase). He does Building, Decorating, Plumbing, Gardening, Fixing, Moving and stuff that's pretty grubby. But he also does IT jobs like fixing, installing stuff & troubleshooting computers/laptops etc..

I'm very proud of him cos it's his own business and he's always got people after him needing work doing ?

I think I know a fair amount. He's a personal injury lawyer, and I know broadly the tasks he has for each case, and that he is a specialist in certain types of calculation. He occassionally tells me about cases that he's finding complex or are particulalry tragic/shocking, but can't go into specifics. Although I do take a genuine interest in what he does, I coudn't give anyone on here advice about personal injury as I don't know and understand enough about the law myself.

I don't think he could explain in great detail what I do - my official title is Product Manager (Development and Procurement), and its a hugely varied role because I work for a small company. He's probably tell people I design x, y, z products to sell online, and that I have to go overseas to visit suppliers. He only knows about the tasks I have through my complaints and whinges when I'm at home, or if I'm excited about a project and bring samples home. I don't fthink that he's really interested but if I talk at him, he usually lets me until I get it out of my system ?

Far too much! We are both in the same field, he owns his company and is the geeky engineer type. I do marketing in his industry including his, and since he owns his company with no business partner, I get dragged into a whole lot of other stuff (basically everything he hates doing). He hates anything involving 'words' so I end up draftng a lot of his emails for him! I often stand on a trade show booth and sell his product, so I have to know a fair amount about it. I actually have a lot more business background than he does in some areas so he uses me as a sounding board a lot!

If anyone needs a question answering about how to do acoustic tests on transducers, I probably know the answer based on what I know about his company. Funnily enough that does not get asked much on Hitched!

My H is a criminal barrister and I've learnt quite a lot about his job - just through him doing prep on his cases at night whilst I watch TV ?.

In fact, I'm becoming quite good at guessing the likely sentences that his clients will get!

I do know he works incredibly long hours and is turning grey at the grand old age of 30!

My H does similar but for the local council, although he does a lot of homers for family/ friends. And our computers need frequently re-built. I'm known as the IT 'expert' at work because everyone assume I absorb everuything he knows, which is obviously not the case.

I'm not sure H knows much about what I do (I'm a dietitian in an acute hospital), we don't talk about my work much at home.
