How much is too much? cake related!

Flowmojo, 15 August, 2012 at 14:28 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 42

So, im working on setting up my cakey stuff, and have a calculator on excel i use to work out how much it costs to make cakes (taking into account ingridients inc icing, boxes and supports if stacked and so on). I dont factor in the time it takes as such as i dont feel im at a level good enough to charge proper rates for that plus im not a professional so i simply add in a few pounds to the total...

How much would consider paying for a cake like this for instance? Im just gauging reactions and getting ideas so i can eventually work out and hourly rate:

Considering I know fark all about the cost of cakes, I would say £100.

I'm assuming £50 for ingredients and materials then 3 days making it (with all the detail)?

But my caveat is that I know nothing about cake

Oh god I've got no idea! Maybe £100?

I find a good way to work things out is materials + time at minimum wage to begin with. That's what I currently charge for toppers etc.

What would be the materials cost for that cake and how many hours would it take to make?

Our wedding cake was a similar size with one more tier and we paid about £275 for it I think

Will you be making wedding cakes aswell, as they always seem to have a higher price tag on them aswell, and depends on the fillings too

Is that ribbon edible?! I'd pay more for features like that. Depending on how many people it fed, I'd probably pay up to £150 for a cake like that.

    Flow that's great!

Our wedding cake was £300, but was three tiers and had "wedding" in the title. The same woman does 2 tier annviersay/birthday cakes etc for about £150 I think, which I would gladly pay for the one you've flashed!

When my mum is baking she charges ingredients and materials x 3. So if a cake cost her £20, it would be £60. But then that isn't enough for a cake of that detail.... Hmm how about cost of ingredients + minimum wage x hours worked and see what that comes out with? You need to add on extra for electricity for your oven and things.

I think it does depend on the features, as we paid more for sugar crafted flowers on ours, shame our hotel threw them away!

For the fruit cake tier I had, a plain iced cake from the shop I hired the stand from was about £100. I know Mum spent about £50 on ingredients, so your time would equal £50? And that's just one tier...

I agree I'd pay extra for details like rose petals etc.

I would prob pay about £100 - £130 for a cake like that.

That wedding cake is stunning flow, I love the lace look icing!

Sorry in answer to your OP - for that cake from an at home cake maker lady I'd probably expect to pay about £90 - but then that doesn't seem enough when I charged £75 for a one large tier sponge christening cake and 30 cupcakes recently. The person said that was a mega bargain apparently??

Maybe I just don't have a clue about things, or am a cheapskate!?!

I would say around £90-£100 tops. (unless its actually a lot bigger than what I'm imagining) What is the size?

The lady that does our cakes did a very detailed two tier super mario cake for my partner's sons birthday, that Cost £50 and looks slightly smaller than the one pictured. Depending on the occasion the price will vary (which i always found dodgy but thats just how it is) people will expect to pay more for a wedding cake/anniverary cake than a birthday one.

a a side note- I'm completely hungry now!

That cake is amazing flow!! I'm so jealous! I reckon about £130-£150.

I'm not very good price wise though, i looked at some plainish cakes that were £300!! My mum did a two tier cake for my wedding and spent about £60. If you did the x3 thing, i would have happily paid that for my cake as there was so much detail. She handmade 80 calla lilies freehand. I wouldn't have paid that if it was plain as it was quite a small cake. It all depends on the level of detail/decoration.

Could you look on cake maker websites near you to see what they charge to get a rough feel for your market.

    My cake lady charges;

    • 3 tier from £300
    • 4 tier from £410

A 50% deposit is required on booking, the balance payable 2 weeks before the event.

Wedding and party favours start from:

    • £1.50 for Cupcakes
    • £1.00 for Mini Muffins
    • £1.50 for Cookies
    • £1.50 for boxes of handmade Truffles

I think location has a lot to do with the different answers.

The first cake I would say £150.

    The wedding cake £250...easily.

Many of my friends are paying £350 for a three tier in London (inc set up at the venue).

I paid this for my 4 tier but it was a family friend...

Cupcakes are equally expensive down here too!

I would agree and say no more than £100 really.

Out of interest Flowmo, is that the sort of price you were thinking?

I would say £150 You cake is amazing! Wish I could bake!

My wedding cake was cupcakes but I know the person I got it from makes a point of not charging more just because its for a wedding. She has built up a fab business once word got round about it and has now opened a deli along side the cake making business.
