How much wine?

laura02010, 9 October, 2012 at 16:46 Posted on Planning 0 17

Afternoon everyone,

I am getting married in a hotel in June and it never even occurred to me to provide my own wine until I read it in a magazine over the weekend! Sainsburys are doing a deal - 3 bottles for £12 and the hotel are charging corkage of £9 per bottle which saves us about £3.95 per bottle!

My dilemma is how many bottles to get.... we have approx 60-70 Adults attending the ceremony and they will be split beween 8/9 tables (still to be confirmed)! For arguments sake if we say that there are 8 people on 8 tables, how many bottles of wine do you think we should provide?

Thanks in advance xx

I would provide half a bottle of wine per person as a rough guide.

You'll need to think of what red/white quantities you buy.

I also bought my own wine and added an space on the RSVP card to specify their choice - I then bought accordingly.

(Well, I bought loads of red as my favourite was on offer and I knew I'd drink that if it didn't get consumed - the white I then bought according to quantities).

What does the venue charge for sparkling and champagne corkage? We saved a bomb by buying that in even though the corkage was slightly more than on the wine.

Thanks ever so much, great guide and I will certainly do that and like you said what ever is left I can consume.... happy days haha!

I know the corkage was more on the champagne and sparkling wine but can't remember how much, how did you save so much doing it that way?

It's actually not - £9 isn't a bad corkage rate at all depending on the venue.

Mine was dirt cheap at £7 compared to everywhere I considered.

Is £9 really that expensive? It's not something i have ever had to look into before!

    No worries.

Our sparkling and champagne corkage was £8, which was very cheap. The cheapest bottle of champagne at the venue was £30 and we managed to get a brilliant deal on a really nice champagne from Tesco Wines for £11 a bottle.

Our venue didn't offer Cava as an option so we chose to pay corkage on that for the reception drinks so saved a bucket load there too.

Overall we spent £900 on the reception drinks (more than 2 per person) and toast champagne (1 per person) instead of £1800!

I think that at 1 bottle per person is too much. We allowed 1/2 a bottle per person and that was more than enough as people had been drinking at the drinks reception beforehand. I'm all for not running out and over estimating but if I had a bottle of wine to myself, even with a 3 course meal, I'd be absolutely hammered!

Also corkage wise, just as an example, ours was £6 per bottle of wine and £7.50 per champers/sparkling - plus VAT (never forget the VAT!)

I am expecting to have 7 tables and am *probably* providing 1 bottle of each per table, Included in the package for the venue is the toast drink and a glass of wine with the meal so guests will probably get around half a bottle each.

ETA: Our corkage is £10 so we have to factor that in when thinking about providing more wine...

We r going for half a bottle, but not doing corkage as once we worked it out at £10 per person it wouldn't save that much, certanily not enough to warrant the added hassle of sourcing it, buying it and then transporting it along with everything else to the venue. Have to say if it was even a couloir of quid cheaper we may have looked at it more seriously.

Our venue is charging £10 for wine / £14 for sparkling.

my dads bought some big bottles of sparkling wine in italy so it makes it cheaper paying corkage

I wish my venue was this cheap! They charge £17 which is the price they charge for their house wine. So unless the house wine is awful we'll stick to half a bottle per person of that plus champers for the toast + after the service.

Nope! That's what our venue charged, £12 for sparkly and £14 for champagne.

We did corkage for wine as it was cheaper. Make sure you instruct the staff what to do with leftovers or spare bottles, either give it out or leave it for you to take home, else they'll drink it (unless you're not bothered of course!).

Our venue automatically gave it back to us but as we then went on honeymoon for over three weeks, my bloody parents had drank it all by the time we got back! ?

I'd say half a bottle of wine per person during the meal, and maybe with couple of extra bottles per table.

Also, are you need to think about reception drinks, toast drinks and then drinks in the evening, if you are providing them...

Haha, I wish our venue were cheap for corkage! I'd pay £9!

We're having their wine and champagne because corkage on champagne is £24!! They don't allow your own wine!!

    *sigh*

Not sure how much to provide either, but we have 84 adults...half a bottle would be 42 bottles....at £17 a bottle you're looking at £714 for table wine!!!? ?

WE might just have two or three bottles per table of 8.

This is the same for us. We have 80 guests, half a bottle each which is £17 a bottle plus the cost of proscecco on top. The cost of food + drink at my venue has pushed us over what we wanted to spend but unfortunately we both fell in love with the place + nowhere compared for us :-S
