HRML - BT Vision or Sky+ ?

dinx, 27 November, 2008 at 13:31 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

We always used to have the SKY basic package which I'd upgrade for December so we also had the movies channel. About a year ago we moved to just having freeview rather than paying a SKY subscription each month.

I've had an offer through in the post this morning for free SKY+ box and free installation so I thought I'd have a look at that versus BT Vision (which we had a special offer through for a few weeks back as we have BT broadband).

It's so confusing! Neither of the websites really tell you much or make much sense, but essentially I think the options are:

SKY+ (free box and installation) probably with the £18 / month package for variety and knowledge packs (and we could upgrade to movies over Christmas for £26)

or

BT Vision (£30 box and £30 connection) - we could just have the freeview channels most of the time and possibly upgrade over Christmas although it doesn't look like the extra packages are worth it?

Essentially what's most important to us is that we don't have huge outlay each month as we don't watch enough tv to warrant that, but we do like to have some history/discovery type channels and things like E4/ITV3. I really like the idea of being able to pause/rewine/record etc.

Have I interpreted this correctly? What packages have you got? Can you recommend one over the other or give any advantages/disadvantages to one over the other? Are there hidden costs?

?

We've just had Sky+ put in. We did look at BT Vision but can't remember why we ruled it out now but we did.

We got a free Sky+ box and a free regular box as we have gone for multiroom.

We have BT Vision (with H an ex-employee of the BBC he has a deep-seated aversion to Sky!) however, we did consider it but decided the extra payment for the amount we watch it wasn't worth it

We got our V-box free (and I think you should push for a freebie) and currently pay £6 a month for the TV pack which includes quite a range of previous programmes - I'm currently catching up with Black Books. They change the programmes quite often

The packages are in the link below:

    http://www.btvision.bt.com/viewing-packages/#pack_tv

However, I think this is going up to £7 and when we upgrade our TV I might go for the £14 Bronze package which includes the TV pack, TV replay, and then two from Picture Box films, Music, Kids or Standard Sports. Setanta Sports is an extra one-off £10 payment

Other films not in Picture Box are an additional cost and on immediate demand, and they've just soft-launched some in HD which you download overnight, so presumably they will be adding more soon

To be honest, I should grab a Radio Times and check out what channels you'd actually watch and whether or not they're available only on Sky or whether they're on Freeview (and therefore BT Vision) - and then whether you prefer the BT Vision packages

Have you considered Freesat? We're getting this with the new TV to give us HD, but are keeping BT Vision

An alternative to both Sjy and Bt Vision that might be worth considering is just to get Freeview+.

You can rewind, record etc but no monthly subscription. That means it's a bigger price straight up but no ongoing fees. We got the box as a wedding present, and use the record/rewind/pause function so often, I wouldn't be without it now, but there was no point us having Sky as we just watch E4/BBC3/4/Dave etc.
