Its an alternate reality story. There has been a massive war and only 12 isolated districts (like counties, but with electric fence borders) and the ruling Capitol. The Capitol control the districts, and the districts are very poor and have very little food.

Each child from the age of 13-18 is put into a draw for the Hunger Games, where they fight to the death for the entertainment of the Capitol residents. Those in the district can "buy" extra food by putting their child's name into the draw an extra time.

One boy and one girl is chosen to be the Tribute (fighter) for their district. Katniss' sister Primrose get's chosen on the year after her 13th birthday and Katniss volunteers to replace her.

There are other sub-plots - love, revenge, rebellion etc but don't want to give too much away!

I can't picture any of the other actors who tried for the part as Katniss, except maybe Saoirse Ronan

Loved the books. Am excited about the film, but doubt it'll be as good as the book, feel it will be a bit wanted down compared to my imagination!

I've heard good things about the book but resisting buying them till uni is over, otherwise I'll spend my revision time reading books instead.

Reckon I should hold out and read the books first before watching the film?

I haven't heard much about it but I'll look into it.

My current excitement is reserved for Season 2 of Game of Thrones, Morgan Spurlock's New Brittania and Once Upon a Time Smiley smile

I'm reading it at the moment and not understanding the hype. I hope it improves.

I went to see it last night and although I enjoyed it, I can't see how it will smash Twilight. It felt like it took a long time to get anywhere.

I've read all 3 books and really enjoyed them. Saw the film on Friday and was a little disappointed. I understand why they have tamed so much in order to get the 12A certificate they needed so the the younger fans would spend their money going to see it. It does take away from the story of the book though I think. Peeta should have been way hotter also! He's not a patch on Gale.

I didn't read the book, but I saw the movie, and had the same reaction. So there was this war 75 years ago and now every year there's a gladitorial battle between children as 'penance'? Very absurd, but I did enjoy the movie. Apparently the author was inspired by the Theseus myth and Roman games.
