A bit of background info:

My husband and I met in 2004. Exactly 8 years ago. We both work backstage in theatre and met on an Opera we were working on together. He was a cheeky chappy I was warned away from and I was a flirtatious young thing out to have fun. We quickly realised however that being together was a lot of fun and were quickly in seperable. We were together every second. Long summer days were spent lazing around on the grass in the grounds of the country manor house where the opera was held and each evening we worked together before post work drinks getting to know more about each other.

A few weeks later that job finished and we had to return to our seperate homes. It was then that we made plans to get work closer together and very quickly we were living together.

March 2010 he popped the question in the early hours of the morning. We'd been out for the evening with friends and Id gone to bed early. He's stayed up chatting to our friend and I now know plucking up the courage. He woke me up around 3am by sitting on the edge of the bed. I couldnt understnad why he was saying lots of lovely things about me and generally being soppy. Then out came a ring. I was amazed and still rubbing my eyes I said yes without hesitation. The ring which was slipped onto my finger fitted perfectly. It wasn't a big rock (which i would have hated) or any great eirloom. Instead it was a ring he'd made himself. He'd bought a band of silver and learnt how to make a ring from it. I was amazed that he had created something so beautiful and that it fit so perfectly when he'd had no idea of my ring size (I dont wear rings nbormally). I was sooo happy and couldnt wait to start planning our wedding....

have a hunt around ebay for something that matches your requirements. I got a plain one for my dad and a lace one for my mum and could chose font and swirl design as well as colour and text.

Our time to play to the camera...

These are a few shots our photgrapher Andrew Billington has sent us through while he processes the rest. I love them and cant wait to see more.

Once the formal shots had been completed we headed across the fence to the wilder side of the golf club to get some intimate photos done. We knew it was boggy over there so we'd prepaired with wellies and right on cue my mate threw us the bag of apples we'd asked for to attract the highland cow that I so desperately wanted in the photos.

We stopped to get kitted out

and then made our way into the wilderness. I had to scoop up my dress a lot to keep it out of the rain soaked grass but these were the shots that I would keep forever and a bit of mud and rain wasnt going to stop us.

We tempted the cow closer and closer step by step. Eventually our photographer climbed the fence into its field to get the best shots he could. The cow didnt look too impressed and kept pawing the ground so we didnt hang about. I few moments and the shot we wanted was captured beautifully.

Once the cow shot was completed we went into the woodland area for a few shots under the trees. It was lovely having the time together away from our guests just to enjoy for ourselves. It started raining again but we didnt mind at all. A few more opportunities for umrella shots

We then wandered back up the lane trailing our photographer behind us so he could snap more pics. We were constantly stepping aside for cars coming down the lane who instead of just getting out of our way quickly, slowed right down to congratulate us. It was lovely but did mean I was constantly trying to lay out my dress behind me again each time. Finally with a clear path we meandered up to the reception where everyone was settled in the bar for drinks. The rain had pushed them all inside, a shame since we had a beautiful outdoor space to use but these things cant be helped.

We set about chatting to our guests while the room was turned around and yet again I lost my husband into the crowd.

    Our reception....

Once the room was turned around the guests were asked to move into take their seats. This seamed to take an age dispite some grumbling they were hungry. In the room we were ushered into the corridor just outside to wait to be introduced. People seemed to take forever to sit down and instead were going around chatting and taking pictures. We were having a carvery buffet which couldnt be set up till we were out of the corridor. Obviously people didnt realise this so they were just delaying their own food arriving.

I would suggest if your reception is set up like ours you ask someone to announce for people to take their seats or people will mingle forever!

We took the opportunity to have a chat though and enjoy a minute or two together. Then we were announced and we walked into the room to take our seats at the top table. The room looked lovely and more relaxed now it was nice to see everyone there in the one place.

While they set up the food to be served there was a bit of a gap for more chatting. I would suggest if your having this kind of food set up and room turn around that takes time you concider putting your speeches before the meal. It would have neatly filled the time gap we had there. However soon enough the food was ready and it was well worth the wait. OUr roast beef was absolutlely cooked to perfection and the yorkshire puddings that my hubby is so fond of were amazing. Everyone said how beautiful the food was and concidering the changable weather we were glad we'd settled on a hot meal. Pudding was a rainbow spread of fruit salad. I hear it looked beautiful but I never made it out to get any as I was mingling and chatting. Besides, Id eaten loads that day already!

Then it was time for speeches.

These are some of the fabulous fabric squares that our guests wrote and drew for our guest book quilt. We are sending out squares to all our guests that couldnt make it on the day too and once theyre all back I'll be sewing it into a quilt that we can keep forever.

Some of them are really creative. Im so glad I decided to do this.

So there we are. We're married. We had a wonderful day and the weather didnt matter one bit.

Next day we met family for lunch and my sister announced her pregnancy. The celebrations continued and as people drifted away we set off for our mini honeymoon weekend. We went to the opera where we met and had a few lazy days.

Now were looking forward to getting back our professional pictures, then our trash the dress photoshoot and we are gathering brochures to plan our proper honeymoon driving around America. Cos you know its always good to have something to plan....

    Thanks for listening.

    Yours, Mrs P x

What a lovely report, and you look gorgeous. Fabulous photos!

The umbrella is lovely. I've had a quick Google but can't find anything as nice, with that pretty wording on. Where did you find it? x

    What a truly lovely report!

I've bought hankies very similar to yours and was a bit unsure about them, but it brought a tear to my eye when I read that bit, so I'm glad I've got them now!

You'd be surprised how creative people can be. I was fully prepaired for squares of signatures but we were really pleased with the results. I think our clear instructions helped:

    The umbrellas:

I went to a wedding fayre at Birmingham NEC and bought the one with Just Married on it. I had at the time thought it was also heart shaped as that's what they had on display. It wasnt till I got home I found it was round so then googled heart shaped umbrellas. so in the end we had one of each. i know they make heart shaped just married ones but I never found them again after the wedding fayre.

I have to steal your idea of the quilt. What material did you use and how bit were the squares? And what type of pen did you use?Did you have a basket or anything to put the new and writen on bits of fabric?? Sorry for all the questions but it's such a brilliant idea. You will have to flash and the quilt is made :-) xxx

I used a 100% plain white cotton, quilting weight cotton. (this is thicker than sheet fabric but not too stiff) I bought it by the meter and then cut it up myself. I cut the fabric into squares 20cm across and then marked a square in the centre of 15cm across. To mark the square I used a washable fabric pen. It marks pale blue and then rinses out under pure water. It means people can see where you're going to stitch and then you dont' lose any of their message.

Then oens for writing with I ordered from Pelenna patchworks. They are called. Pigma Micron fabric marker - black, medium tip. You can get them in a finer tip but I found this flowed best over the fabric rather than the tip digging in. I also ordered form them some Reynolds freezer paper (roll) which you iron onto the back of your fabric. This keeps you fabric flat and smooth for writing on.

We also wrote on a fabric square ourselves and framed it as instructions.

    THE QUILT GUESTBOOK.

WE’RE BOTH SO GLAD THAT YOU CAMEAND WE’D LOVE FOR YOU TO SIGN YOUR NAMEPERHAPS YOU’LL WRITE A LINE OR TWOOR DRAW A PICTURE SO WE’LL REMEMBER YOU
PLEASE WRITE WITHIN THE CHALK LINES WITH CARESO WE DON’T LOSE YOUR MESSAGE, WHEN WE STITCH ALONG THEREIF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE, JUST TAKE ONE ANEWAND HELP US REMEMBER OUR DAY OF I DO

    WITH THANKS

We put the fabric in trays which were actually flower arranging trays. I'd tried to get baskets that were the right size but with no luck. I stumbled across the flower trays when choosing my wedding flowers, we had silk.

I got two so that there was one for blank fabric and one for finished pieces. I also allowed lots more squares than I needed so that people weten't afraid of starting again if they needed to. In the end I think I only had two spoilt squares.

The results were amazing. I was so impressed with what was produced. it also gave people something they could do while they were waiting for their turn for food to arrive. A great conversation started. I have also sent out squares to guests that couldnt come on the day so they could send us messages to be included. And some older guests like my Nans who struggle now with writing I traced what they had written in our wedding cards onto the fabric by holding it up to a window. That way we're able to include everyone.

I've not started sewing it together yet as I was in the middle of making a more detailed and time consuming quilt for my best friends wedding in November. It is now my project for the winter to complete ours for the long dark nights.

Be sure if you use coloured fabric to wash the fabric first or test the colour fastness. You dont want your quilt ruined by running dye first time you wash it.
