Insurance for new drivers

aji, 30 March, 2009 at 19:16 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good place to try for affordable insurance for a new driver - I'm 33 and female, so thought I would rate as slightly lower risk than a younger new driver, but it is still very expensive! I've tried gocompare, compare the market, confused etc and the cheapest that seems to be coming up is around £550 -£600 for comprehensive insurance.

Failing that, does anyone know of any insurance companies that will let a named driver start accruing no claims so that if I go onto H's insurance I can start to bring my own premiums down so I don't face the same problem in a year's time?

Grateful for any suggestions,

Thanks?

Aji.

Have you tried moneysupermarket.com to do a price comparison. They recommended Diamond for me when I first bought my car (25 and just passed my test) and they were by far the cheapest

I'm 40 and H is 41 and he's FINALLY decided to learn to drive. I've put him on my insurance (Direct Line) as a Provisional Licence holder and it works out at less than £20 extra per month and he's covered for free on my breakdown (also with Direct Line). He'll also be accuring no claims while on my policy.

As far as I know, Direct Line don't appear on any of the comparison websites so maybe go directly to their own one and see what they offer?

Elephant.co.uk was cheapest for me for the first couple of years (did a price comparison thingy). I was 22 when I got my first car. I'm now with some random tiny company whose name I can't remember (sorry!), again through a price comparison website.

Thanks all, will take a look at your suggestions and see what they come up with. I knew it would be expensive, but I hadn't realised just how expensive!!!

That doesn't sound expensive to me. I passed my test 11 years ago, have 5 years protected no claims and pay £510. Tesco came out cheapest for a one off payment for me last time, but I stayed with Direct Line because they were the same price when you pay monthly.

Depends what you're trying to insure also to the cost.

Don't know if this is a second car you are trying to insure, but your Hs no claims can only be used for one vehicle. Also if you are the main driver then you should be the first driver - in fact you are required to be legally, although if there was a problem it may be difficult to prove!

I don't think that sounds too expensive. My insurance is £600 and I have 4 years no claims and passed my test 8 years ago. Diamond came out best for me.

I passed my test when i was almost 35 and the cheapest i got was with bullseye which is part of swinton.I paid £950 fully comp. After my first year it went down to £600.

Some companies came up with over £1500.It does pay to shop around.

Hmmm - maybe my expectations are a bit unrealistic then....

I've been looking at taking a policy out in my name which lists me as the main driver as there doesn't seem to be an option to add me as a secondary driver to H's car unless I go on as a named driver, in which case it doesn't seem that I can start to accrue my own no claims with most companies. Will it cause problems if we both have insurance saying we are the main driver?

We only have the one car - a 1995 Polo, so nothing flash, and I thought I'd best go fully comp as I'd want cover for myself and the car if anything did happen. Oddly, I tried changing cover from comprehensive to third party fire and theft on the Direct Line quote and it worked out more expensive!

Apologies if these are daft questions - I've never had to do it before and H is away for a couple of days.

    Thanks again,

    Aji

So you have the one car for which your H has a policy with him as the main driver - and he drives (will still drive) the car more than you? You just need the one policy with your H as the main driver and you as a named driver. If you get a second car in the future, then some insurance companies will give you a head start on the number of years no claims from that policy (assuming you haven't claimed!)

The main cost to the insurance company for older cars isn't your car but whatever you hit.

Kegsey - yes, that's right. If I just go on as a named driver, and we get another car in say a couple of years, will I not be very limited in who I can get insurance with or face the same problem of high insurance when I do go to get insurance in my own name? ?

Do you mean having two policies on the one vehicle? It has to be one policy per vehicle.

I used to work for Norwich Union Direct and we would take into account time that someone had been a named driver on a policy if they had a clean licence and driving history. We would often lower the price of the quote to reflect this, after speaking to an underwriter, although it was a policy discount, rather than a NCD (no claims discount) if you see the difference.

If I were you, I would simply be a named driver on my H's policy, rather than worrying now about a NCD when the second car isn't actually around yet. No point spending to save!
