When I asked this question a million years ago the general consensus was to send them out 3-4 months before the wedding x

Ooo gosh, I was planning to send mine out 8 months to a year before! Might have to rethink that idea then, I guess that is rather early...

You can send a Save the Date card out at about 8 months & then the Invitations 3-4 Months before that way they have an idea of the daye to work around & a reminder when they get the Invitations.

I think the tradition is to send them approx 8-12 weeks before the wedding. But everyone does it differently.

I sent out save the dates about 11 months before and plan to send invites out about 2 months before.

But we just received an invitation for a wedding in August 2011 so they bypassed the save the dates and went straight for the invitations.

So I would do it however you want!

The only thing about sending out invites really early is would it make people even less likely to officially RSVP??? They might decide to RSVP closer to the date and then forget nearer the time maybe? The only reason I say this is because I work weekends so I can't RSVP to the wedding invite we just got for next August until next April because we can't book holiday for the next financial year until 1st April - hope that makes sense!!

We too broke tradition as we just felt it impractical - particularly for people who have to travel some distance and stay overnight (and in one case book flights).

We sent ours out in October, rsvp 1st March, for September 2011. Come March will we will chase up non-responders to get an idea of final numbers as it will then help us to budget what we have left as to whether we can invite more people or provide extra stuff such as upgrading the evening buffet.

There is really no "wrong answer" to this question, but do be prepared for people to forget to respond. A lot depends if they're people you see on a regular basis or distant relatives you only swap christmas cards with but feel you have to invite really.

"Save the Date" cards can be useful but I'd personally rather just get an invite and respond, as it's really no more hassle to pencil it in your diary.

Those that really want to be there will do everything they can to be there whether you give them 6 weeks or 6 months notice of the date.

We're sending ours out in January, with a March 1st RSVP for our 7th May wedding.

A lot of our guests started booking accommodation when they received the save the dates earlier this year.
