Is it just me or is mama mia poo?

Bowski, 20 June, 2009 at 22:23 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 52

Ok I'm watching it whilst an arseholder but it's utter tripe!

I like abba as much as the next person but it's badly acted, badly directed and has no real plot, I don't care who her dad is or that her mum was a slag. I've let Mr B watch boxing as it's that crap. I've seen an hour and 20 mins of it and it's not better.

Someone tell me why it's good!

I was going to watch it whilst waiting for Russell Brand to start, but only managed about 2 minutes and thought Harry Potter 1 was a better option (and that's saying something!)

We stuck it out thinking it would get better. It doesn't!!

Pieres brosnan can't sing so that bit's rather funny but other than that it's pants. I thought alcohol would help but no!

Glad I'm not alone in my bafflement of why people love it!

I dont like it either - only watched about half but I didn't get why it was so good (though Pierce Brosnan is ?). I don't like musicals though.

I love musicals and I thought it was a fun, easy to watch film. Nothing too taxing!

One of the family got it on dvd for Christmas so I didn't really have much of a choice! I was interest to see what all the fuss was about though. In the end I thought it was okay but nothing special.

I got 20 minutes into and had to put it off. I really couldn't stand it and wondered what the huge fuss was. I can only think it must've been better on the stage.

Is it really that bad? My mum keeps trying to lend me her DVD. Is it worse that Molin Rouge?

Massive Abba fan but the film was utterly wrong. Cringeworthy awfulness. How James Bond and Mr Darcy could put their name to that is beyond me. I wanted to kill a small kitten within 10 minutes. I got it on DVD for xmas and if anyone wants it I won't even charge postage.

I love, love, love musicals (proper ones) but nothing has so far persuaded me to watch Mamma Mia. I'm not a fan of tenuous pop-based musicals anyway, and all the trailers I've seen are properly cringeworthy. Don't get why/how it was such a big hit?

I've only seen about 20mins of it and that was probably enough, my mum seems to like it though despite telling me the story is that the mother (Meryl Streep) had got pregnant when she was travelling after school/uni and was too scared to go home and now her 20ish yr old daughter was getting married, so in theory this means Meryl (and the others) should be about 40?! Ha, they wish!

    Is that humanly possible? ?

I've not seen MM. All that Abba would make me do myself (or someone else, I'm not fussed) some serious harm.

At last someone who agrees with me! I thought it was utter poo from the first scene and it didn't get better. The music of course is excellent but that's it. The film was rubbish and I don't get the hype at all, sorry!

i loved that pierce and the swedish guy had to have a good 15 years on colin too...

and how the young pierce was a hippy (lates 60s) but the young colin was a punk (late 70s). so that would make the daughter about 30, even 40...

but having said all that i adored it ? i love musicals and it is fun

I hated every single minute of the 20 odd minutes that I watched.

I just didn't "get it" the hype I mean!

    Not my scene at all

I thought it was awful. So bad my toes curled, my teeth hurt and eventually I had to leave the room.

I'm sure it was great on the stage, but the film...... ugh. Meryl Streep - prancing about in dungarees like some PlaySchool presenter, and Pierce Brosnan effortlessly putting off all his female stalker fans with that cringeworthy attempt at singing. The casting is just wrong. The plot is just wrong. Ugh.

And I love musicals. And I love Abba. And Muriel's Wedding. So this shows how wrong Mamma Mia! really is.

I'm not an Abba fan and only like good musicals genera;lly, (so Guys and Dolls yes, We Will Rock You no) but I really enjoyed Mama Mia. It is completely ridiculous and makes no sense, the men in particular are laughable and the plot is ludicrous, but somehow all those elements combine to make it hilariously good. I think they key to enjoying it is not to compare it to any other film you've seen; by any reasoned analysis it's awful but actually it really works.

I'm so glad I've seen this thread as I managed to avoid going to see it at the cinema as I thought it looked utter crap but had all my friends going on about it thought maybe I'd missed a trick. I was going to watch it as its on sky now but thanks to the PSA I'll give it a miss. ?I thought Moulin Rouge was crap too.

I agree with this - JK dragged me to a screening with singalong subtitles (and about half a dozen people in the audience ?), and I was very pleasantly surprised.

All the many, many criticisms are 100% valid, and as a professional film critic I have to say that it's one of the most ineptly-staged and directed big-budget films I've ever seen in my life (theatre/opera director Phyllida Lloyd had never made a film before, and my God does it show) - but once you've broken through the 20-minute pain barrier (which I see some of you didn't quite manage ?) and just go with the flow, it's strangely entertaining.

I can't say I was keen. I do like Abba but I don't like musicals. For some reason I didn't know it was a musical and I didn't know the story was that the mum slept around and didn't know who the irritatingly gushy daughter's Dad was.

I also got annoyed that she had an American accent even though she was brought up on a Greek island, and that she should be 30 at least by the dates. My sister (who loved it) explained that it was written 10 years ago.

The best thing about it was that I got a big bag of Maltesers to eat during the film ?

I haven't seen the film but I saw the musical and thought it was dreadful. I wanted to leave in the interval but was persuaded it would get better - it didn't!

I thought I was a freak, alone in my 'huh????' at peoples constant raving about this film. I saw it was a 'in flight' choice and whilst I knew it wasn't going to be exactly taxing to watch I though it a good 2hrs worth of 'blah' to keep me awake on a long haul flight.

I did about 25mins before I thought 'I can't stand this'. The daughter annoyed me sooooooooo much, the 3 old hags annoyed me, the utter lack of plot annoyed me. The singing annoyed me. The dungarees annoyed me. The whole thing is pointless. The French and Saunders spoof with Sienna Miller was much better!

I am utterly baffled as to why this gets the rave reviews and girly thumbs up from EVERYONE I've ever spoken to anywhere in the world.

Thank god for O/T, you've stopped me questioning my sanity!

I don't really like Abba (I think this may actually be against the law now, but there you go). I mean, one Abba song, fair enough, quite catchy, several together, pretty much would make me want to kill. So, for the sake of the other members of the audience I haven't even attempted Mamma Mia, it does LOOK entirely awful though and I have never heard anyone say anything that would actually make me want to see it (I think the tag 'the feelgood movie of the decade' is the most offputting thing). I love musicals, but like others I mean proper ones, not We Will Rock You and That Sort of Thing. (Although I also love Moulin Rouge. I think anyone who doesn't love Jim Broadbent singing Like a Virgin is a bit nuts).

We went to the final night at Edinburgh to see Mamma Mia for my hen party, it was fabulous! .. I haven't watched the film as I don't want to spoil it but I have recorded it, I take it I should do my memories a favour and scrap the recording?

Hmm... KN and Mr JK coming out in support... Maybe I should give it a go.

I loved Moulin Rouge (although my undying love for Ewan McGregor may be at least in part responsible), so maybe that puts me in the category of people who should love Mamma Mia?

I went to see it at the cinema with friends and REALLY wasn't looking forward to it. But I LOVED it. I thought they looked like they had a blast making it and although the plot is non existent that didn't bother me. I guess it's like Marmite - you either love it or hate it.

I am still to understand the hype surrounding Pulp Fiction. Now I thought that WAS sh!te.........

It's not you, it is poo.

Thought it was just me. I like the opening song but can't put me finger on it - it just doesn't work for me. I was actually embarrassed for them especially Julie Walters who I normally really like

If I'd tried to watch it in the house having never seen it I'd have hated it too. I was dragged along to the cinema with my mum and MIL and was almost sulking but it was genuinely the best laugh I've had with my mum in years. You get pulled in by the shared experience thing and despite it's awfulness, production and plot wise, it was bizarrely compelling. It was just like a gang of mates breaking into song and having a laugh - sounds sh!te doesn't it and yet...

Utter dross. I took my daughter and her friends to see it. My seven year old son insisted on coming along thinking that he would be missing out if he didn't. He hated it. When Pierce Brosnan began to sing he turned to me and said "Please make that man stop mummy".
