Is this enough? (exercise related)

R-A, 10 April, 2009 at 13:00 Posted on Beauty & Wellbeing 0 4

So I have 'issues' with doing exercise for exercise's sake. Don't ask, it doesn't make any kind of logical sense ?

Anyway, I have always walked loads and usualyl walk to and from work (1.5 hours / 5 miles a day)

I had stopped losing weight and remembered that I used to love swimming so for the past 3 weeks I've swum twice a week for an hour, working fairly hard (60-70 lengths in that time).

However, my weight loss is still non-existant. I know the diet side is sorted, and I'm definitely expending more calories than I'm taking in.

Is it just my body re-adjusting? I can feel the changes in terms of tone - which is fab - but I really could do with losing lbs too.

Any wise words?

Not wise words as such but

I having been trying to lose weight since Jan when I also started training for a triathalon (sp). I have had weeks with good losses and weeks where I would lose nothing. In the middle of March I was so fed up as I was eating less and moving more and it just wasn't coming off nor rather depressingly was I seeming the difference in my measurements. I then added interval training and upped my swimming andd yet still did not lose for another two weeks. Now suddenly it has started dropping off and almost overnight I have dropped a dress size and have achieved a stone loss since Jan.

Lots of rambling but basically don't despair you will shortly see the difference and it will feel so good.

WSS, it does take a while for weight loss to kick in, in fact eveery time I've upped or started exercise after an idle phase I've gained, mainly because it makes one hungrier. But that said, it does sound like maybe you need more short bursts of intense work - swimming is great but it's hard to really get your heart rate up - ditto walking. Could you try playing squash or something a couple of times a week, or going out and dancing until sweaty? Riding? Cycling?

Thanks both. Hopefully I'll start to see losses soon. I am really enjoying the swimming though, and I'm going to keep it up regardless, it would just be nice to see some lbs off!

Soph, I do try and get my HR up swimming - tend to do 4 'fast' lengths (front crawl/back crawl) then 4 slower (usually breaststroke) - get quite out of breath on the faster lengths - so working quite hard about half the time. I figure I can keep going for longer if I don't go for it totally 150% the whole time - couldn't manage 70 lengths like that! Definitely would be sweating if I wasn't in the water ?

It's funny you mention riding and cycling. I rode loads as a teen and have been promising myself once I get a bit of a payrise (end of this month) I'll book myself in for regular lessons. I just love it. My bike got nicked when we moved house but again I cycled lots as a teen and we got some money for new bikes as a wedding present. Mr R-A was just saying yesterday that now the weather's good we should go and spend it ?. I used to commute everywhere during Uni by bike and it would get decent usage, especially if I get sent to a hospital next year that I can't walk to (likely). I don't really think of cycling or riding as exercise - just things I do for fun - but I suppose once they are both back on then that'll help things too. ?

    Thanks guys. ?

Maybe this exercise lark isn't all bad....

Exercise works so much better and is easier to keep motivated when its something that you enjoy so go for the cycling and horseriding. Losing weight whilst doing hobbies that you enjoy is a bonus!

I posted a very similar post a few months ago. I was etxercising 6 nights a week, and eating the right amount of calories and not losing a lb. In fact I think I gained a lb one week.

Anyway, I got lots of helpful responses which kept me motivated, and the weight has started coming off. I've now lost 23lb since Jan 1st, and dropped a dress size, nearly 2. I just wanted to show that if you carry on exercising - especially if, as said, you do exercise you enjoy as a hobby, and eat right, it will come off.
