I've been tangoed

summer solstice, 22 May, 2008 at 10:11 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 18

I'm going to a black tie dinner tomorrow night, and thought this would be a good time to try out a spray tan - a bit of a trial run before going for it in June for my wedding. I look hideous. I don't usually wear much tan, and the girl told me yesterday not to worry about the colour I looked leaving the salon because that was just the colour accelerator that it would look much lighter after showering. But I've showered for ages, and I still look awful!

It's nice and even - I'll give her that, it's not streaky or anything, just ridiculously dark! Is there anything I can do? Or am I going to end up scrubbing my skin raw?!

When I had a St Tropez on my legs I just used a scrub until it was at the shade I was happy with, although to be honest I was never happy, it just didn't look natural enough for me. If you use a soft scrub rather than something too abrasive it should be fine.

I would call the salon straight away and suggest they do something. You were told it wouldn't be as dark and it is.

This was California Tan and was recommended by the girl that's doing my make up for the wedding, as she said it looked the most natural and wouldn't streak!

I can see that on someone used to wearing more tan, the colour is even, and isn't streaked - it's just too dark for me!

Are the salon really likely to be able to do anything if I call them?

I've never been in your position, but it's worth trying. As far as i see it, they sort of promised that it wouldn't be dark even when your queried the darkness, so i think the least they should do is try and sort it out free of charge.

Oh dear, i know a lady i work with had it done last year before she went away and she came into work and she looked like a massive orange but she went home that night had a shower and then had a shower the day after came into work the following night and it looked beautiful very natural aswell,

i would ring the salon and see what they say,

you havent got anything to loose have you

They told me not to shower last night after I had it put on - and then to have a shower this morning - which is what I've done and I look really horrible. I'm not sure I even trust them to put it right!! I'll try and call into the salon at lunchtime to let them see the state of me!

These tans work with your skin pigmentation so it might feel too dark for you but there really isn't anything you or the salon can do about it. If you shower again later and tomorrow and lightly exfoliate the colour will hopefully fade a little.

They told her it needed X amount of hours to settle i think she had it done at 1 in the afternoon and she showered probably 10.30 ish as we finish work at 9.45,

i don't know what else to suggest, perhaps have another shower later and then in the morning, and then see,

it perhaps looks quiet strong to you, but other people may think you look glowing

I really don't understand this whole working with your skin pigmentation - I am normally such a pale shade of white that I'm almost blue! Today I'm far far too dark - a girl in work who wears tan alot has even commented at how dark it is! So how can that be working with my natural pigment? Surely it's a case of the girl in the salon spraying too much on me?

I kind of thought that they probably couldn't do much about it, and I guess I'll try exfloiating lots tonight and tomorrow in the hope that I lose the tangoed look

It looks like I need a plan b for my wedding - all I wanted was to look a slightly less blue shade!! [:'(]

are there any of those that you can see what you're putting on as you're doing it - I tried the Dove one once and ended up missing out a big chunk of my arm as I couldn't see what I was putting on!

I'm a bit crap at putting tan on myself!! And now I'm not happy with a professional doing it incase I end up like I look today! I guess I need to get practicing with soomething myself!

KB is right, they do develop with your skin pigment. Maybe it just looks dark because you're so pale normally. You can ring the shop but the girl who did mine just told me to shower and exfoliate to lighten the shade. I did, several times, and it was honestly fine.

Was it a spray tan? The darkness of a tan can be controlled when using a spray tan, maybe that's more of an option for your wedding. You could have several practice runs with someone till you're happy?

My sister does spray tans and asks each client exactly how dark they want thier tan to look. She usually gets feedback like its excellent, not streaky but they would like to go darker next time (she airs on the side of caution with new clients).

I think its harder to control the darkness with a cream fake tan.

Agree with the others, shower again tonight. Ive heard lemon juice can help to fade a fake tan. Maybe try rubbing half a lemon over yourself before you shower? It cant hurt trying can it lol.

It was a spray tan. And I think the girl that did mine must have aired on the side of the darker the better. After assuring me I looked darker yesterday than I would actually look (I look about the same) she told me that we might want to go a bit lighter for the wedding! You don't say!!

Although it's not streaky or anything, my hands seem to be much darker than the rest of me. The beautician did apply a 'barrier cream' to my hands elbows, knees and ankles, but for some reason my hands are still much darker - and considering the rest of me is very dark the hands are really bad looking!

I'll give the lemon, and exfoliating a try tonight!

    Thanks everyone!

St tropez do a remover, don't know if this is what you're after.

If I'm looking for a light developing colour, rather than the tinted moisturiser I use this

    http://www.boots.com/shop/product_details.jsp?productid=1083597&classificationid=1039534

It has a shimmery light colour as its going on so you can see what your doing and it isn't too dark, you would need to build up the colour for that.

I normally use the fake bake tinted lotion sparingly and usually get a lovely colour. I find it spreads easily and if i want a deeper colour from the 1st application i just use more.

Well I exfloliated last night for ages, and again this morning, and I'm no longer a glow in the dark shade of orange! I think I'll have one more go with a body scrub before I head out tonight, and it'll look okay! My feet don't seem to have lightened up just as much as the rest of me though and they look a wee bit grubby but it's a tenfold improvement on yesterday! I'm just really glad I had it done Wednesday and not yesterday!!

    Thanks everyone for the suggestions!
