Let down by photographer - any replacement recommendations?!

Alice_In_Wonderland, 9 October, 2012 at 09:19 Posted on Planning 0 28

Please help!!

Originally we were going to have a friend-of-my-parents do the photos (he's only amateur but very good), but he's chickened out and now won't do it!! ☹️

So, we're now looking for a photographer, but we haven't really budgeted for one as we thought it was all sorted.
There's about £200 in the budget that we set aside in case of emergencies - I guess this counts! We could probably find another £200 to add to it, but ideally would like to keep it around the £300 if we can.

Can any one recommend anyone please?!!

Thanks Smiley smile

Hi...sorry to hear about your predicament. Wedding photography is often undestimated with the pressure and responsibility it can bring. It is like no other form of photography.

There is a sub 500 group of photographers, although you will need to check carefully what you are getting. If you can find some extra cash, you can get some reliably decent togs from £550 upwards for a disk only coverage. Again though, check out their websites to see if you like their work. Apart from your OH, the photography is the one thing that will last your lifetime, so its worth the investment.

    Hi Luna,
Yeh - that's pretty much the kind of thing we're after!!

Google is proving to be my enemy though - there's just so many on there!! Smiley sad
I don't have a lot of time to sit on t'interwebs looking through galleries, and not all of them have their prices on their websites. Very annoying!! ? lol

Was hoping some one on here had used/was going to use/knew of one they could recommend. Not lazy, just making the best use of available resources!!!! Smiley winking

Try Gumtree, the odds are good but the goods are occassionally odd.

£200 is awfully low, terribly low in fact. You might be able to find someone 'just' starting out for that. Maybe if you ask for just the images unprocessed you might get further. As start to finish wedding photography is a 5 day affair when you add things up.

I'm based/wedding is in Bristol. Not after anything fancy, just lots of nice piccies!!

Also not worried about "post processing" - they didn't have that in my mother's day and there's nowt wrong with her wedding photos!!! Smiley laugh lol

    Hiya

You may find somebody who's just starting out for under £500, but just be aware (as I'm sure you are) that they won't have as much experience. Weddings are very difficult to photograph, as you get one chance at many parts of the day and they can't be re-staged, so make sure you do look around before you book.

By post processing Chris means sorting out white balance & colour temperature (certain lights can add a very yellow colour cast to photos which needs to be corrected), areas of over-exposure, and various other tweaks, and this is also all done with film so your mum's photos probably were processed too ? Sorry to get a bit geeky there!!

Sorry I can't recommend anyone in your area, but no doubt some hitchers will be along with some names for you to check out

    Ali x

I meant the prices looked good. Not being rude but hard pushed with the prices. And I like this one

Fair dues, it's tricky in that price bracket isn't it. i try and give the togs the benefit of the doubt when I see spot colour that it was at the request of the couple!

    ☹️

At this rate it's going to be a collection of friends' & family's snapshots *sigh* we really can't stretch to much more than £350. I had no idea photographers were so expensive!!!

Thanks for looking for me Luna, will have a proper look at the websites when I get chance! Smiley smile Hopefully one will fit the bill!

What about investing the money in some digital cameras so friends and family can take them for you?

    Whoops just seen, Bristol.

I could highly recomend a photographer called Victora Figzal, google her as im not sure of areas covered but she is fairly near by and her prices are I believe are within your budget.

They are no more expensive than any other profession. People under-value the skill and time that goes into it. They assume anyone can do it, and hire a cheap photographer, but it hardly ever ends well.

My best advice would be to do whatever you can to raise your budget for photography. Perhaps ebay off some old goods you won't miss etc.

The difference in quality between £350-£700 can be a big jump.

Also regarding your mothers wedding photo's. Apparently back in the days of film, the photographer used to post process the images in the darkroom, or a professional lab would often do it.

To try to put a perspective on it....how many watch "don't tell the bride" and see how often the bride dislikes the dress that is shown to them before the wedding. The reality is that even on this programme, the dress can be changed.......

With wedding photography, you don't know what you are getting until after the wedding...then its too late if you don't like the product....and there is no option for change.

In the scale of £s per hour spent on the wedding by the vendors, it is true to say that the photographer and videographer are by far the cheapest.

If you are happy to risk no TOG with friends photos only, you could leave it til last minute and see what deals TOG can give you then. Also our TOG offered a CD only package for I think 1-2hrs worth of photos around £300, so might be worth asking for a smaller length of time?

Also he hasn't chickened out, he's likely just had or been given a reality check. If he's good at photography like you say, yet is scared of ruining your wedding photo's, then I think that says allot.

There should be a sticky or something pointing to the below article.

    Hiya!

    What about - http://www.epphoto.co.uk/

We looked at them (on MIL's recommendation) and I think the prices were fairly low (from memory). I liked the work, but I prefered our TOG more (we clicked, and our TOG is local to us so knows the venues). I think they had a good building blocks package, so even if you couldn't afford all of it now, you could purchase later on.

You may be able to find a tog within budget but you might only get 2/3 hours for that your looking at at least £750 for a basic all day coverage

Budgets are what they are. You could always get someone cover the ceremony start through to the start of the wedding breakfast.

I'm doing this for a couple in a few weeks at a cheaper price (but more expensive compared to a days coverage).

I would only do this on a Mon-Thursday though.

Paul Walker in Ayr is fab. He works with his wife which makes for some brilliant photos. He snaps the posed photos whilst Katherine gets the natural ones of people enjoying themselves. They travel anywhere x

After I got married, I just went round to all my friends' houses with a hard drive, and copied all their photos. Then just did the editing myself.. you could always do that, and get that friend to edit?
