London tomorrow

Chicken, 31 March, 2009 at 10:41 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 34

Are you all going about your daily business regardless of the disruption that's been threatened? We haven't been told to avoid the area at all but, whilst I don't think I'll be attacked, I have tickets for Wembley tomorrow night and will be fuming if I miss it due to protesters.

Yes, I'll be going in as usual, but I'm in the West End so I doubt it'll be affected.

Yup, business as usual for us. I work in the city but not near Bishopsgate/Bank of England so should be OK. I am secretly wanting a protestor to glue themselves to the front of our building. Just for a laugh, like.

I think Thursday will be the worst day for me - I'm in canary wharf. With the G20 at the Excel I reckon the DLR will be up the spout (deliberately - they've already said they're closing at least 3 stations) and I reckon the Jubilee line will be regulated as well.

I am looking forward to wearing casual clothes though.

I don't have much choice but to go to work ?

I am going to walk in so I don't have to go through the City though (not that I look like a business type anyway, but I don't want to be in the wrong place at the wrong time).

Another one in the West End here, I don't think we'll be affected much. A few problems on the tubes (Jubilee line) but that's it. Well I hope so anyway.

I was due to come by train from Cornwall tomorrow, I have been told not to bother as once I get into London I am unlikely to be able to get to CW as they are shutting several DLR stations.

I work just off Moorgate. A law firm on the ground floor of our building has been targeted, as has another round the corner. The G20 protesters' website have produced a map - which looks very busy...... We've not been told one way or the other.

I'm in Westminster so we could get caught with people ending up at Trafalgar Square or Parliament Square. Could make getting home interesting as I don't fancy going on the DLR or going through to charing X if there's lots of people about.

You'll still be able to get to Canary Wharf via the jubilee line though.

H is still going in and he is pretty much in the centre of the tube stations they are advising you avoid if possible (Cannon Street, Liverpool Street and 2 others I can't remember). Advise he has received (and also those in our london office) is to dress down, carry security passes / ID with you, don't make too many unnecessary journeys outside (so meetings have been cancelled and they have been advised not to go out at lunchtime). Also don't antagonise protesters, avoid eye contact if people are being agressive and consider changing working hours so you don't travel when protests are on.

For Wembley can you avoid central London generally and get there through Harrow or on the Watford line? Not sure if that helps as I don't know which area you are coming from.

I travel in to Bank tube every day and work in the Gherkin - undecided whether I'm coming in at the moment. On the one hand, why should I change my working routine but on the other hand it would be quite nice to work from home.

They started boarding up premises on Cornhill yesterday, it is all rather surreal. I took a look at the map they are going to be using - can't quite see what the McLibel trial has to do with the current economic crisis, but I am sure someone has come up with a tortuous justification.

Thanks, I might just do that then, where I am going is open as usual, although a work mate who lives in Plymouth said that the trains will be packed from here as they are saying up to 3000 protesters are coming from the southwest. I think there is a lot of scare moungering going on, the train and London will probably both be empty?

RBH I'm on the outskirts of the city for work and need to get to Wembley for 6.30ish. I'm sure I'll be fine. Only really worried about missing match - can cope with delays etc on other days.

I'm home on Mat Leave, but H will be working from home tomorrow as he doesn't fancy the double trouble of getting through CW nd then the inevitable fun and games around Westminster.

My brother works right in the middle of the City and has been told he must come in, but to dress down. On enquiring whether he should dress right down to jeans and t-shirt to avoid looking like a dressed-down banker he was told no, nothing more casual than a polo shirt and trousers would do. He might as well wear a sign saying "kick me"

H had similar comments about not looking like a dressed down banker?

His work have advised dress down and err on the side of scruffy.

We've been told that a lot of the protesters will be dressing "up" trying to look more like bankers ?

I've got similar transport issues as your H. I'm going to ask those in power here if we should be considering working from home tomorrow and Thursday. Not that I can actually work from home as I can't link into our systems here. But I can try.

Both our City and West End offices have now been told to dress down because protestors are expected to target mainline stations that are used for the commute as well as the buildings themselves. H works at Marble Arch and they've been told that a march is finishing there one of the days (I don't remember which although I'm not 100% convinced he's not getting confused with the weekend) so have also been advised to dress down.

Works perfectly for me because I'm also going to Wembley tomorrow so intended on wearing jeans to work anyway. <rebel>

Chook - will mail you seperately but I read somewhere there could be problems at Wembley because of them using the floodlights.

I'm also really near the gherkin - Duke's Place - and we have been told home clothes for weds and thurs also. They are keeping our office doors locked all day - cancelled meetings - advised us not to go out at lunchtime etc. It's weird seeing all the buildings being boarded up nearby - suppose its cos we are fairly close to Lloyds Building, Gherkin, Bank of England and also RBS on Bishopsgate. I'm glad the law firm I work for isn't on the list but I am anticipating it still being a little scary. With our building being the last one in the square mile we have armed police outside the building pretty much all the time so hopefully they can keep our building safe!!

I'm not going to let it worry me too much though ?

An email has gone round to all the big burly lawyers here asking them to exercise judgement as to whether they think it will be safe to travel to work tomorrow. No such consideration has been extended to the girls here, though.....

I'm on mat leave at the moment so I'll be safely tucked up at home in SE London, which is a good thing as the email which was sent round basically said that we had to go about our every day business and not let it affect us (including not dressing down). Very worrying seeing as my work is on the map so people are bound to turn up and protest.

You cannot help but be amused by the fact that the only people in the City Of London over the next couple of days who will be completely unaffected and indeed unaware (save for watching the news) of these 'protests' will be anyone attending the G20 Summit.

We live in the City. They have decided to close my son's pre-school for the 2 days, so we have decided to take advantage of this and go to Legoland while it is still quiet. Otherwise, I think my husband would have gone to work as normal, even though he works for one of the main targets.

We were on holiday (prebooked), when it kicked off in 1999 and can remember seeing all the damage when we got back the following Sunday. I'm just hoping we won't be seeing the same tomorrow night.

Mr123's place is targeted too, lots of emails warning him what to do, they're allowed to go in in jeans, but they have to take suits in their bags and change for meetings.

his idea is to go in at his usual time of early o'clock, he figures the and I quote, 'long haired, left wing hippies won't be up then,' and by the time he comes home he suspects they'll have got bored / cold / all been arrested so it won't be a problem.....

he can't work from home, he's living in a caravan in our front garden while our building work is done pmsl.

hope you all make it home and back safely.

I only usually do a half day on Wednesday anyway (lazy part-timer) but my daughter's nursery in the Barbican is closing , so I've rearranged to do Thurs instead. We're on Fleet St/Fetter Lane so not too close to anything but everyone where I work (barristers' chambers) has been told to come in in civvies and change into suits if they have court/conferences.

That should be fairly straightforward. Your quickest route would be to get the victoria line to kings cross/st pancras (or walk) and then get the first capital connect service direct to Wimbledon - takes about 40 mins from St Pancras Domestic. There's a train at 16.34, arriving Wimbledon 17.16.

Otherwise, do victoria line from euston to victoria and then district line to wimbledon from victoria. Or northern line from euston to waterloo and then train from waterloo to wimbledon.
