Looking for a wedding venue where we can do most of it ourselves

Jaynec36, 5 August, 2010 at 11:25 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hi I'm new to this site and I'm hoping someone on here can help me.

After being engaged for 4 years, my fiance and I have just been told we're getting a bit of money in a couple of months so we've decided, finally, that we can get married next year.

It's not a lot of money so it's not going to be a lavish wedding but I know what I want - the problem is I don't know if it will be possible.

I want to find a venue around London or the Home Counties (or as far north as Cambridgeshire) where we can do as much of it ourselves as possible.

It doesn't have to have a licence as happy to go to a registry office first.

We have a friend who's a caterer who will do a buffet for us (but would look at venues that offer buffets as don't want a formal sit down meal). We also want to organise the drinks ourselves (but again would look at places that have a manned bar).

Ideally I'd like outdoor space but with the british weather I know that might be asking too much!

Can anyone help? Am I setting myself up for disappointment?

Thanks very much

Hello Jayne and welcome to Hitched. I wonder if High Barn near Braintree might suit you - they seem relatively flexible about what you have - they even say you can use your own caterer for a fee, and it seems as if there's outdoor space.

How many people do you need it for? I live on Essex/Herts border, and there are lots of barn venues locally.

We don't know yet as we've only just decided to do it. Probably close to 100 though. We're Herts so that sounds great. Do you have any details or any idea where I can get more info?

    Thanks

Hello and welcome to Hitched ? You could look at getting a marquee somewhere.

If you can find the ground - field, school etc you could buy a marquee and do it yourself. We did exactly this in our garden (we've lucky we have the room) and it looked fab!

Lots of places that insist on using in-house caterers will do a buffet for you. They're pretty pricey though - we were quoted over £30 per head from several places! ?

In the end, we've decided to ditch the hotel idea (well they ditched us because it turned out they couldn't do our date) so now we're looking for somewhere we can have a marquee and camp afterwards.

You could try something like Chalfont Sports Centre in Buckinghamshire. They seem to have quite reasonable ground hire (judging by a very quick google for 'marquee wedding Buckinghamshire'!) http://www.chalfontsports.org.uk/
