Making your own stationary??

WeddingPrincess, 17 September, 2009 at 12:28 Posted on Planning 0 19

I have decided that to save some money I am going to make my own stationary....however I do not have a creative bone in my body unless I am yet to discover it! I was just wondering if anybody had any advice on where to go for supllies (I have heard Hobbycraft is good) or any do's and dont's?

I have seen some fabulously, wonderful designs and creations on here and have been inspired by them. I thought that if I get started as soon as possible then I can do them as and when I get five minutes.

Also, this might be a stupid question but what exactly do I have to make apart from invitations....

Any help/horror stories appreciated in advance!

    Hi

I made my own STDs I went to Hobbycraft the only advice I would give is to buy afew more cards etc than you will need coz I made afew errors so Id buy 10% more than you need for these errors. Lady at hobbycraft was really nice said if I needed anymore of the card I had brought then to just call with the bar code from one of the packs and she would check if they were in stock and reserve them if not she would order them in.

Since my STDs however I have found through hitched a HIB who hopefully going to be doing our invitations, we found a invitiation we like which is very reasonably priced - she has been fantastic so far we discussed colours and is even sending out some samples for me. her website is www.babybearcreations.co.uk and I would highly reconmend due to the excellent and fast service I have had so far!!

    Hope that helps

Ive not even thought about invites but FMIL will probs make them as she makes cards for a hobby and they are very good! I think she get all kinds of bit and bobs from craft fairs or just as she sees them when out and about!

Apart from invites it depends on what you want/or are having but you can make save the dates, tables plan, menues, ummmmmmm, name cards, table numbers, the list is endless i suppose, whatever you plan on labelling at the wedding that the venue doesnt provide really!

We have a Hobbycraft opening nearby on 8th Oct so will hold out till then and then go arts and crafts crazy!!

FutureMrsCover - did I see on your Facebook that you have found a venue?? Is it in the Uk? Have I just totally made that up?? Lol

Im the same as you not creative at all, but i also have no patience!! which i think is the key thing, it would start boring me after a couple of hours, then i would lose the motivation to do it and keep putting it off.

So in a nutshell forget about creativeness but if you have patience then yes go for it, i think you would do a really good job.

My Step MIL2B did our invites and that was all we had made, we arent having place names, and the table plan is being printed on plain A4 by our venue...so really what else you make is up to you, you can do as little or as much as you want too.

Now I have decided to do it I am getting all excited about it! Just wanna start makign things. As well as saving money I think it will be really nice to know that I made them all by hand.....and believe me I will be telling EVERYONE that I have done them!

Do you have any pics of what you have done so far? I dont mind looking through older threads if you have posted them before?

No, i havent flashed anything yet but once I have a pic of my dress I may do a mega flash later and show everything! It is very theraputic and really rewarding once they are done! I will be making sure everyone knows i did them!!!! Ive even bought a little 'handmade by the bride' stamp which I am stamping on the back of the stationary! Not that Im big headed or anything! Just proud of what Ive acheived! ?

I got my card from "The Paper Mill Shop" - their online purchase card boxes are very good value, though I'm not sure how many branches there are UK wide that you could look before you buy. Other stuff come off of Ebay and ribbon came from a local florist's suppliers.

The design stage of doing your stationery is fab but one thing I would say is don't underestimate how long it will take to do it. My invitations are due out at the end of the month and are nowhere near ready yet so I'm having a minor panic attack! I may even have to take a couple of days off work to get stuck into doing them!

Hello Wedding Princess. I made my own Save the Dates and invites. For the save the dates I got card from Hobbycraft and WH Smith. For my invites I bought the bits from Pure Invitation https://www.pureinvitation.co.uk/, the quality and service was really good....I'd buy other bits from them again if I need anything.

I'm buying all my stationery supplies from www.pdacardandcraft.co.uk - they have stacks of colours and types of card and paper to choose from. Its all v reasonably priced too.

Only problem is that its online but they do a swatch pack for £1 I think which gives you little bits of card in all their colours (and there are loads of colours!!!).

I'll be making the invitations, menus, place cards, table name cards and table plan

I also use PDA a lot for my designs - I get a discount with them so if you were wanting a lot of stuff (they will cut all sizes of uncreased card for inserts - not just what they have online) I'd be happy to order on your behalf ...

But if you're going for pocketfolds or wallets then they're not the best option as they come flat packed so you have to fold and stick them which doesn't sound much, but if you're faced with 100 of them, its very time consuming and its almost impossible to get as good a finish as you would from manufactured wallets/pocketfolds that come ready made.

For those I'd recommend either Cranberry Cards (although they are trade only but i'm always happy to order on the behalf of brides who are making their own stationery!), or the pocket invitation company, depending what you're after shape/style wise.

Hobbycraft are expensive (from what I've head) compared to some of these suppliers, so it depends how big a self-make you're going to do...

Cloverdale Mice are good for ribbon - I get a discount with them so again, if you're ordering heaps I'm happy to do it for you so you get a saving. Its a lot cheaper than going and buying it by the metre in a craft shop.

www.blubelles.com are great for good quality diamantes and such like (I'm often surprised at the lack of 'sparkle' you can get from some suppliers diamante - they look flat and 'dirty', but Blubelles are really good quality and pretty reasonable).

Syntego are also good - but again a trade site with a minimum spend but again, always happy to help if I can as I use them. They do some fabulously unusual stuff.

    HTH!

Hi! Im also making my stationary.

If you have decided on design your half way there. Look around your local area for shops and explain/show your design. Every craft shop I have been into have prcied everything up, given me really helpful advice, given me samples of card, inserts, ribbon etc. Some even hold their own card making classes - if your not creative it might be worth paying for one class, make a mock invite with the experts on hand then your be away.

Im also making; thank you cards, table plan, place settings (would also do order of service if I needed one)

Keep us posted with how it goes.

Hi there, I'm making my own too. So far have only done the STDs and started designing the main invite which will have in it seperate cards for directions, RSVP card and general info (will be a pocket invite). Will also be doing - place cards, seating plan, table names/numbers, little flags for my cupcakes, cards and envelopes for wishing bowl, wish cards for the guests wish bowl, labels for favours, thank you cards, hummm... must have forgotten something there. will probably go down to hobbycraft for the rest of the materials as well as bits of ribbon etc.

the only advise I can give from experience is try and do a small mock up before you go and buy loads of materials - I bought 2 boxes of cards with envelopes and ended up using only the envelopes (if anyone wants blank DL size ivory cards - give me a shout!) so a lot went to waste. Also add up your costs if you can once ytou know what you want to do - it may seem cheeper but isn't always - I do think its worth it though either way, personally.
