Menu Tasting

sdurn, 22 August, 2013 at 13:32 Posted on Planning 0 61

How many of you get this option?

Our venue wont let us do a menu tasting Smiley sad, im a really big foody and its important to me that the food tastes great.
Our venue isn't exactly the cheapest and we will be spending a fair amount on the day due to a full rugby club being there.

How would you go about this situation?

We get menu tasting, but I don't really know how it works.

Do you taste a bit of all the things on the menu and then pick, or pick a top few and try those, or pick the ones you want and then taste them?!

Most of the venues we have seen have only had it on the more expensive packages.

Is it a restaurant? Do they serve that meal normally, or one similar. It's not a perfect situation but you could go there for dinner and order it or the closest thing.

Did you not book in for Valentine's Day?

Or is there another time you go for a meal there?

Valentines day is the only time apparently!
I just feel like with the amount im paying they could atleast offer a discount.

Also she told me yesterday that one of the children who is going to be 5 will be classed as a child guest with an additional £35.00 to go on top.
Yes its only £35.00 but what exactly will he eating??? its not going to be a 3 course meal!! and I very much doubt he'll want what everyone else is going to be eating when I finally decide.
    I think £35.00 is a little steep for a 5 year old.

Ours didn't offer menu tasting to us, but we did get offered a 2-for-1 meal with them so that's roughly the same thing! We are having butternut squash soup to start, roast turkey main and profiteroles for dessert. When we went for our meal we had the butternut squash soup and it was amazing, I had venison for the first time for my main (OH had steak) and we had treacle tart & homemade ice cream to finish. We both agreed it was the best food we have ever tasted and it's making us even more excited to see how good food we haven't tried yet is!

I would go for the meal out option if I were you, also gives you the chance to check out their service (which was also good).

I haven't asked ours but I'm pretty sure we won't - as our wedding package is an all inclusive deal for winter weddings, so the menu for 2014 is set. I might see if we can at least taste the veggie options as there's more than one!

    We're having:

    Onion and Pearl Las soup

Chicken (wrapped in parma ham apparently) with a wild mushroom sauce and madeira jus, and vegetables

    Chocolate torte

    Hi

We get to taste the dishes, they advise us to go with parents / friends and we all pick different options and share. Me and H2B go free and parents are discounted. We have also been there for Sunday lunch just to try as much as we can. We are spedning a small fortune with them, I think they owe you a taste of their food!!

Our evening caterers offered a tasting, but it cost £100. If you booked with them, the £100 was taken off of the final bill. If not, you lost it.
We've hired in external caterers though, but i'm assuming your venue are providing food in house?

If it was something that was really important to me, i'd chat to them about my options. Do your venue put on open days or evenings where you can sample food at all?

We had a menu tasting, we had to choose 2 options from 6 choices for Starters, Mains & Puddings. From these 2, we had to pick one that would be our "menu" for the wedding breakfast, with a vegetarian option too. The tasting was complimentary as was the wine tasting ? We are having an intimate winter wedding, so they won't be making a fortune out of us, but still treated us the same as those that might have been booking with 100+ guests ? It's not cheap ~ rough costs are £110 per head, children under 4 are complimentary, 4-16 yrs are offered either the children's menu or 1/2 portion of the adult meal...........

Can you not just book to go for a meal there? Or presuming by the reference to last thread you posted on this subject, you are going / have been. You've already booked this venue so you must have had an idea of the quality of food etc? What if you have a tasting and it's rubbish, will you cancel and go elsewhere?

Sorry to be blunt, but you've paid your deposit, I don't think there's much you can do. Unfortunately you probably should have thought about food before you gave them your money. All you can really do is pay for a meal there if you want to taste the food.

WPS. I'd not have paid a deposit unless I knew the food was good.

Sorry i'm confused - why do you think that you should be given a discount for valentines day? Please don't forget that your venue could potentially fill the space with full paying guests (and infact your wedding day without giving you menu tasting)

we aren't having a menu tasting & paying quite a bit more per head. Also if we have any children over two we will be charged £ 30 per head.

What i'm trying to get at is yes you are paying lots of money, but so are everyone else

If it is important to you then i'd pay full price for the v day menu to try out the food x

As I said on your previous thread, our venue don't give the option to try the food full stop. The only reason I knew it was nice is because I'd been to a wedding there before.

It's a university rather than a hotel etc so they just didn't give us the option. If they had have had the option - I would have just paid for it if it wasn't offered.

In my cabbage, it's not worth p1ssing the coordinator off for, by pushing the issue if they've already said no.

It's a little unclear from your posts but am I right that they do not have a restaurant regularly open to the public? If so, I can see why they don't offer a discount as they would either have to prepare everything and serve especially for you which will obviously cost them in labour and food or for a special occasion they would be throwing away money to give you a discount when there would be high demand for their limited places. It may not be very good for you but it's business to them.

I didn't have one but my venue did offer tasting. It was free and to be taken midweek when they were open but presumably quiet.

Ignorance is bliss. If you've paid the deposit now and there is no changing the venue I think I'd rather not know if the food is rubbish. Although I doubt it, for the cost ? Have you googled for reviews?

I'm actually not sure if we're offered a menu tasting or not, but I imagine that we'd have been made aware if we were. We wanted to test the food and the service so went for a meal there just before we announced ourselves for our look round. It worked well and the food was great!

Ours included a menu tasting, so we could decide what to eat. Interesting replies as I always thought it was standard.

I also got wasted on too much wine as had not anticipated we would be more or less trying about 15 different wines

I didnt bother, there was only one option on the menu that we both really wanted so it seemed pointless to taste it when we were having it anyway. Based upon my experience all the venues tend to be similar so I am pretty certain we will get what I expect.

I have only ever been to one wedding where the food was really nice and that wasnt in England. I didnt sit there and slate the food, I just ate what I was given and I am sure our guests will be the same.

I do think it is a bit off that venues make you pay for your meal tasting, we offers ours for free and we are not the most expensive upmarket venue in the world!

I agree with what Hatters said, if they don't generally open as a restaurant then you can't expect them to go to great time and expense to put on a taster session for someone who has already paid their deposit and booked! Unless you're seriously suggesting that you would cancel over the food then they have nothing to gain by going to this effort and why should they.

Actually at the end of the day even if they did serve up a slap up buffet for 2, this really may bear no resemblance to the service and quality you might just get when they're rushing about serving up say 100!

You just have to go with it, and nobody will be that bothered if its not great, they will rave about it if its good.

Am I odd that we diddnt have a menu tasting? We just went and ate there before the wedding and we only did that as it was at another event. If we were that worried we would have just paid to eat there. Am starting to think we did this whole wedding malarkey wrong.

    Im a huge foody!!

But.... Deep down I know its not a major issue, I just don't want to give people a reason to B*tch about the day.
I know certain people are going to whether I give them a reason or not.

I need to be concentrating on the day for me and H2B not making everyone else happy.
As long as we're having a good time everyone else can put up and shut up. Smiley smile

Its not the food that is going to make the day, its going to be me marrying my best friend and the love of my life.

Im having a....... I am sooo bloody happy day today Smiley smile. Cant stop smiling Smiley laugh
And just recently I have been looking at OH and thinking god your bloody Handsome!! ... I always think he is handsome....but im really taking the time to take it all in. Enjoying the view Smiley smile

I love love love this happy feeling!!!
