Mexico Honeymoon - Anyone Been HELP!

Mrs G to be, 3 September, 2010 at 12:22 Posted on Planning 0 34

Hi Everyone,

Here i am talking about Honeymoons before I've even sorted out half of the wedding plans but anyway..We are looking to go to Mexico, Riviera Maya/Playacar/Playa Del Carmen area..Now it doesnt matter how many hotels I look at, I go on Trip Advisor and manage to rule it out. Basically our budget isnt very big, and cannot afford something too amazingly grand but I think we have a good pick of a few 4.5/5 stars.

Can anyone tell me basically if you've been to MExico and where to stayed and really if you'd recommend anywhere to stay? Only I feel that I can get better honest opinions from people on here than Trip Advisor!

Thanks!!!

We went to Secrets Maroma Beach for a fortnight and absolutely could not fault it - totally blew our budget on it but figured it genuinely was going to be a once-in-a-lifetime shot and it was all includsive so only spent on excusrsions, sunscreen and souvenirs once there. Seriously cannot think of anything about it we didn't adore (cappucino martinis in the lobby bar were sooooo amazing I cannot tell you.)

I went volunteering in Mexico and loved it there.

However I was on the Westside of the coast, and I was in a rented house for volunteers, so no ideas on hotels. But we did visit hotels for their pools and loungers - lots of wonderful options!

Nights out were great, they often have "ladies night" polocies, one night included all you can drink for 2dollars whilst the men had to pay 20! Brilliant for our girly gang!!

I went in August - it was sweltering, you won't be able to do much more than get to the beach and lay about. Walking/eating and working (I was volunteering in a prison!) are very hard work in the heat! other months would probably be a bit nicer.

We went on hm last year to Mexico & stayed at the hotel Catalonia in riviera Maya. Was beautiful and one of the cheaper ones we looked at.

I stayed in Playa Del Carmen a few years ago at the 4-star Riu Tequila hotel. The hotel grounds were beautiful and the staff really friendly. The rooms were lovely but a little "tired", however the week after we left (Aug 2008) it closed for refurbishment so they will be a lot nicer now.

I enjoyed most of the buffet food, the huge selection of desserts being the best. It did get a little samey but we ate out in town a few nights, and also went to the steak house at the hotel a few times (which is free but you have to get up early to book). My favourite thing about the hotel was the cocktails, they were amazing and the selection was huge. Plus they used the premuim spirits too unlike a lot of other all inclusive's which use the cheaper brands and charge you for the better ones.

Although it was not set on the beach we could use all of the facilities of it's beach-front sister hotel (Riu Yucatan I think) which was a 5 min walk away or 2 mins on the free golf cart they run all day.

The area I stayed in was a quiet strip of hotels called Playacar. To get into Playa Del Carmen town it was a 20 min walk or 5 min taxi which cost $5. There are other hotels more central but not sure of the prices.

I think Mexico is a brilliant choice for a honeymoon as you have the gorgeous beaches and there's loads to see and do - ancient ruins, water parks, boat trips etc. If I hadn't already been this would probably be my honeymoon choice! If you have any other questions about Mexico just ask Smiley smile

Thanks all for all your recommendations!

I SOO SOOOOOO SOOOO wanted to go to Secrets Maroma Beach, but it is so expensive and way out of our budget unfortunately.

So, we went in with our budget and basically we have got a pick of pretty much either El Dorado Seaside Suites or Gran Bahia Principle Riviera Maya resort?? Anyone been to or had a buchas around either of those?

    xx

    Hi Mrs G to be

we went to mexico last year and had THE most amazing holiday!!! We both really regret doing it now, as finding it difficult to get a hotel that compares. We stayed at Excellence Riviera Cancun and i honestly couldnt praise it enough!!! if you have any questions about the hotel feel free to ask. Not sure on your budget so dont know if its in or out of it??

    xx

Hubby and I stayed at the Grand Serinis (I think that is how it is spelt!) in Riveria Maya last December and we loved it, really great holiday. It is a 5* hotel but not with a 5* price tag. I would recommend Mexico to anyone and I would go back in a shot!

AlmostMrsP - glad you recommend Secrets as we are going there!

Mrs G to be I went to Riu Yucatan about 10 years ago and loved it, a friend went to Riu Tequila 2 years go but didn't like it, they are next door to eachother and you can use the facilities of a few other Riu's nearby. We looked at the Moon Palace but its HUGE which put us off.

Ooh we looked at this one actually because I like the idea of the animals all running around. What was the food like and how about the location?

The advise would be brilliant! x

We really liked it, great staff, fab cocktails, great restuarants, good rooms (there is a massive jacuzzi bath in all of the bathrooms!). I have done a TripAdvisor review on it...if you can't get the link to work, then my profile name is KellyB1000. It is a family hotel, not adults only but there were couple on their honeymoon there. The spa is also amazing and it has won awards, a bit more expensive than London prices but with a great view. There is also entertainment every night.

If you do go, there are a number of a la carte restuarants to choose from, I think you can choose 3 a week (but if you ask nicely, sometimes they will let you have another one!!). I would not recommend the Italian or Mexican one and would really recommend the Japanesse, the steakhouse and the Brazillian one that is just loads of different and unusal meats. You can also pay extra and have the lobster and steak night on the beach which was good! Don't get the room service, not great!

In December it was really hot, 35 most days! Picked up a great tan.

You can also walk to the main road and pick up a public bus to Playa Del Carmen or a taxi is approx $20.

I hope that is enough info...remember this is just my opinion and these may not be things that you like...disclaimer over ?

    Hiya!

Ive been to the Riu cancun twice, this year and last year. Loved it so much that im getting married there in april 2011. The Riu palace is next door, went there for the day to watch a wedding, it was much quieter and not much going on compared to the riu cancun, The riu cancun had it all, paradise, relaxing, activities EVERYTHING!

    Oohh its a mexico day!

I've just booked ours at Excellence Riviera Maya in a swim up room. However, i know alot of people who have been to following hotels and highly recommended them to me (these reccomendations came from some very fussy people!):

    El dorado casita

    Excellence Playa Mujeres

I very nearly booked at Secrets Maroma Beach but excellence came out slightly cheaper. Have a look at tripadvisor forums, i found them really helpful!

Go a little further south and stay at a place called Casa Miel in Tulum. PERFECT private beech huts well maintained and excellent staff. They also have a sister property that runs a bikini boot camp, so yoga and other workout classes are available. Have fun!!!

    Hiya,

We went to Riviera Maya in April and it was gorgeous!!!

BIL2B and wife got married/honeymooned at Occidental Grand Flamenco Xcaret, which is absolutely beautiful and attached to an ecological/wildlife park.

It was a wedding booked through Virgin (who were DREADFUL but that's another story!) As for the hotel, they couldn't do enough for us, the food was excellent quality and in good supply, the wedding cake was beautiful and the resort was PERFECT. It happened to be my birthday whilst we were away and I was given a bottle of champagne and chocolate-dipped strawberries with a best wishes note from the hotel manager Smiley smile

Admittedly it rained for the first 4 days (hasn't happened in Mexico in 15 years!) but there was still plenty to see and do. Entertainment lacked a little but we didn't mind as it wasn't our priority. Definitely go to Chichen Itza - it does take 2 hours to get there from Riviera Maya but it's wonderful to see, very interesting, and you can get some souvenirs MUCH cheaper than in the hotels/towns.

We booked with Thomas Cook and managed to book the same deal as BIL2B got with Virgin but at half the price! Winner!

We've booked there too - but I think we'll be just leaving a you arrive!

I can only imagine the price of the roof top terraces! We blew our healthy budget on a swim up room!

Still from reading the Trip advisor comments - it's going to be soo worth it!

    Lucie,

I don't think you'll have anything to worry about, our flights with Thomas Cook were great, admittedly a better flight on the way out then on the way back but that was because we were flying back 18 hours after the reopening of UK air space (volcano ash cloud week) and the flight was FULL of people moaning about how awful it was to be trapped in Mexico for an extra few days!

All the staff were pleasant and cheery, the food was good (everything was actually quite tasty rather than cardboard-like) admittedly the drinks and snakcs are overpriced so definitely buy your own water etc before you get on the plane.
