Why would you ruin a mince pie by cooking it with puff pastry?! LOL

Its GOT to be shortcrust pastry.

    Smiley smile x

If Christmas food is so good (esp mince pies and Christmas pudding) why do we not eat it all year round?

Because otherwise we would all be about 4 dress sizes than we are now ? I'm with you on Christmas pud tho, can't stand the stuff! Making a Christmas cake this year just to keep OH happy. He'll probably take a lot of it to work with him to score brownie points with his boss though.

I like mince pies but I'm more worried about the fact that the government is making minced-meat of poor people.

With all the cut backs in welfare - some people will never eat mince pies ever again

Here is the explanation Smiley smile x

The mince pie goes back hundreds of years - England's King Henry V was a great fan of them and was served a mincemeat pie at his coronation in 1413.

Originally the mince pie did contain meat - mincemeat was a way of preserving meat by mixing it with fruit, spices and alcohol. The initial mince pies were large rather than bite size. It is sometimes said that the large pies were cooked in an oblong dish and that the top often used to cave in. As a result the mince pie looked a little like a crib, in keeping with the Christian nativity story.

Over time the amount of meat in mincemeat was gradually reduced until it became the fruit only substance we know today. In addition, the pies became smaller. Apparently they were sometimes called "wayfarers' pies" because they were given to visitors over the Christmas period.

I love the smell of them but can't stand the taste - all because of the candied peel!

I'm with you on this one loopyloo. I'd also have to add Stollen and mulled wine to the list ?

I do however love the fact that it gives me an excuse to drink champers at 10 in the morning while I'm getting the Christmas dinner ready ?

I'm still undecided on mince pies - yet I always find myself eating them!

Mulled wine is awful stuff but mulled cider is scrummy!

Bridebrat - Those mince pies look amazing! I'm with you not liking the mince though...I don't like any christmas food - mince pies, christmas pudding, christmas cake, mulled wine... Quite annoying really. Cheese footballs, vienetta, roses and fosters make my christmas lol. Although I'm going to try and find some mulled cider, not had that before and sounds pretty good!

Ha, thanks! I made loads of stuff last year on Christmas eve so that when I did my rounds of the family I could give everyone something.

Made little salt dough 'tags' too -

The ones on the left are also mince pies made with puff pastry, they're like those danish pastry snail shaped things -

Bride Brat - they do look amazing - but I still wouldnt eat them I cant stand puff pastry - it makes me gag :/

Unless pastry has something in it I wont eat it - like in a pasty if theres no meat in part of it I wont eat it cos pastry is gross! Lol.

I think I might make loads of goodies and take them around with xmas cards and wedding invites this year Smiley smile might even make some peppermint creams...AND cake and biscuits (ginger ones in particular lol)

Migh ave to go and buy some more cake tins/cutters and boxes to put them in lol.

    x
