Mobile phones

ForTheLoveOfMrsBrown, 30 June, 2011 at 10:12 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 34

I need a new mobile phone. I have a spanky new iPod which, apart from not being able to make phonecalls and having to rely on WiFi, satisifies my app/internet/music/etc needs, so an iPhone wouldn't be so obvious, although if it were genuinely the best out there, I'd have one. A man in a shop tried to get me to sign up for a Samsung Galaxy SII - any experience of this handset? What do you girls have?

The Galaxy S II is an amazing phone... Very fast, nice looking, good camera. I have an HTC Desire HD, but if the S II had been around when I got my contract, I'd have been tempted by that instead.

I sell mobile phones for a living so am THE person on H to talk to about it!

Mr RB has the Samsung Galaxy S (I think) that came out last year. He hates it!

I vote for BB. I love mine. Great for email and social networking intergration.

I'm an iPhone gal but predominantly because I work on a mac so it makes more sense. That said, I love the phone and just how intuitive it is.

I have a blackberry and when i lost it before i was gutted. I now have an older version and still love it.

However, the only thing that stopped me getting an iPhone was the fact that it was so much more expensive.

but then I put my ipod in the washing machine so an iphone would be great for me right now!

    Prob no help...soz!

So with BB, you don't get a touch screen, no? How do you navigate around a website?

I have the crapiest old phone imaginable! Hubby has iPhone 4 and loves it, my mate has the Galaxy and struggles to work it. I am due an upgrade very soon but I tend to go on the free gift sites and get something nice for my step-son (he will be getting an x-box and kinect this time) and just get whatever phone is free, but might be worth spending a bit extra to get something decent although I also have an iPod Touch and an Andriod tablet, so not sure there's any need for something fancy...?

With a navigation button/pad thing. I prefer it to touch screen. I always keep clicking on the wrong thing before.

It's a cursor, and you control it like you would on a laptop.

Do you remember when most laptops had a 'nipple'? BB has a trackpad instead.

Oh yeah, with you. I was shying away from BB as I thought (assumed) that the internet browsing would be dreadful but that sounds OK.

Get a BlackBerry Torch if you want touchscreen. It also runs the BlackBerry 6 operating system which has muuuuch faster web browsing than previous models. The App world is pants compared to Android and iPhone though.

I would also recommend downloading Opera Mini. I find it a much faster browser than the one it comes with.

I chose the HTC Desire HD for myself and don't regret it at all. I had a BlackBerry Torch for about 6 weeks and loved it apart from the disappointing app world. iPhones are too expensive given that so many other models perform the same tasks but cost less to run (in terms of line rental) and less to insure.

My vote is HTC Desire HD or Samsung Galaxy S II.

I recently got a HTC Desire S and I HATE it! It's going back (14 day return policy) and I won't be sad to see it go. I was going to get an iphone and then I changed my mind to the Blackberry Torch because it has a proper keyboard plus a touch screen but just yesterday I pre ordered the new LG Optimus 3D phone (again I can return it) so will see what that's like.

Depends what he hates about it really. It's faster, lighter, has a lot of bug-fixes from the software in the old one, battery lasts longer. Loads of changes from the original Galaxy.

From what I remember, weren't you trying to set up Yahoo email on it but it wouldn't work? I think (don't quote me) you have to have a Yahoo premium account to be able to use POP3 forwarding so I think you may find the same problem on the LG phone (it's exactly the same software as the HTC, both Android). Haven't a clue about BlackBerry and Yahoo though.

Sammy no that wasn't the problem apprently even though that was what HTC told me. When I was away for the weekend I took my old and new phone and test them out and it seems the signal is rubbish from the phone and when it's low the phone just doesn't work so anything other than full bars means the system dies. This means the email system just plays up but I do think there are some issues still with HTC and Yahoo because when the phone is connected and I send emails from the pc they don't always get sent until I disconnect the phone! I also don't like the touch screen, getting to the main screen again often doesn't work for quite some time and requires several presses of the button but both HTC and virgin don't know why.

If I do have 2 bars of a signal and try to make a phone call as soon as I pick the phone up and have my hand on it I get a network signal failure making the phone pointless. I've googled a lot on this subject and it seems a problem common with HTC and I think the iphone in earlier models. There are other bits I don't like as well so just in general I'm not keen. I find the iphone much more user friendly and since I'm not really fussed about all the technology in the phone I don't know if the HTC is better than the iphone in that respect but going by what others have said it is so it depends on what you want from the phone. My main thing is having my business emails instantly on my mobile.

Sammy just on the yahoo premium account I don't know about that as I have had mobiles connected to my emails for years through POP3 forwarding. Virgin said the HTC was designed mainly to link googlemail.

I have an iphone and loved it till my OH got a HTC desire and I think it beats the iphone hands down. Also have a BB for work and hate it with a passion, would never use one if I had to pay for it.

My OH has the BB Torch through his work and he loves it esp as it has the added keyboard. I tried it when I was thinking about getting away from my iPhone and chose the Blackberry Bold as it had the same good keyboard but no touch screen. I feel that you have to keep charging touch screen phones though (I did with the iPhone) so I wanted something that wouldn't use as much battery life all the time.

I will be downloading the Opera Mini - thanks for the tip RB ?

Virgin are half right but in a really lazy way. Android software is developed by Google, so they work really well with googlemail. However you CAN link other email providers to Android handsets if you have the right settings, which if the phone can't retrieve them automatically, you can get from Yahoo/hotmail/AOL/etc's websites. It's a lazy explanation from Virgin to say they only work with google. They probably wouldn't have had to put much work in to get your Yahoo account forwarding properly. The signal problem does sound like a fault on the phone though, which might be model-wide or could just be that handset. Either way, I don't blame you for wanting a different one. Hope you get on with the LG better.

Another vote for HTC Desire HD here, I love it! Has everything I want and although I found it took some getting used to in finding everything I'm glad i perserved. Haven't had any problems although does need charging every ngiht but thats the same with most smart phones now!

would definitely recommend getting a pouch or something for it though.

I've just gone back to a NOKIA after many years elsewhere, mainly with SAMSUNG.

I've just got a NOKIA N8, touch screen, best camera phone around and HD video (very good for recording Take that concert on Monday night, :-D) The guy in T-MOBILE said the best phone around is the N8.
