More contraception advice: R-A are you around?

Popcorn1, 31 March, 2009 at 22:13 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

I wonder if you wouldn't mind giving me your thoughts, if not too much trouble, as I'm having a tricky time at the moment deciding on contraception.

I suffer from high blood pressure (under control on lisinopril 20mg daily) and high cholesterol- (I have familial hypercholesterolaemia) for which I've recently been prescribed 40mg simvastatin daily. I'm 33 and have two children, and currently have no plans for any more. My H and I have been using condoms but I'm not happy that they're effective enough, especially as I know I shouldn't get pregnant on the medication I'm taking. Are there any other options for me other than a diaphragm or copper coil? Is the mini pill ruled out because of my cholesterol level? (8.1 before the simvastatin- it'll be tested again shortly).

Obviously I'll be going to see my GP, but I'd like to have an idea of what the options are before I go.

Many thanks for your thoughts.

You are more complicated than most ?

I think Rache is still around so will see what she suggests too...

It's all to do with weighing up risks really. I'd want to assess your risk of heart disease/stroke a wee bit more thoroughly: are you a smoker? obese? family history? etc.

Theoretically you could have the POP (mini pill), the implant or the Mirena as well as the non hormonal methods.

No to anything with oestrogens and the Depo injection.

    HTH.

Thanks so much for replying, R-A.

I'm not a smoker, am a little overweight but not obese, and my family history of heart disease is not great! My parents have both had heart by-passes- dad aged 59 and mum aged 60. My dad suffers from high cholesterol and my mum from high BP and they both have for many years.

I think I definitely need to see my GP though! I quite fancied Implanon after Rache mentioned it on another thread earlier, but I guess that is ruled out for me? I think another webiste suggests it shouldn't be used in cases of high BP.

Thanks so much for your help.

I would be going for one of the progestogen only methods, preferably something v reliable like Mirena or the implant (as pregnancy on lisinopril is a no-no). I agree that condoms probably aren't enough.

Sorry just realised you said the implant could be a possibility. I'll definitely make further enquiries about that, I think. I'd be a bit concerned about weight gain though- I want to lose weight not put it on given my genes!

Rache, thanks very much for your time in replying too. Much appreciated. I'll make an appointment to see my GP this week.

Is the implant widely available at GP surgeries or am I likely to have to go to a more specialist FP clinic. (Not that that matters- I just wondered!)

Depends entirely on your practice although Rache knows more about the goings on in GP land than me.

However, it shouldn't be too hard to get a FP clinic appt if necessary.

Some GPs do but depending on where you are in the country it might be easier to go to the FPC. In our area you can come to me as of last week (but only if you're a patient of ours) but prior to that it was a trip to one of two nearby towns to get a FP Clinic appt.
