Mothers, sigh!

amihohu, 31 July, 2013 at 11:02 Posted on Planning 0 22

Mine has sent me an email this morning saying she think we should reconsider our cake topper because it will clash with the cake (black and whie Art Deco style design by myself) , our topper is a figure of Mario and Princess Peach. Myself and OH both work in video games, we met at work, games are a big pat of our lives, I told her it was just a bit of fun and something we wanted as a nod to it.

The next thing is 'mixing too many themes' our colours are black, ivory and merlot. We are going for a deco/glam/20s sort of look. Large black candleabras with flowers (mixture of callas and roses) with pearl beads draped over them. Back chair covers with white lace sashes. She has said its mixing too many styles and people 'won't get' that its Art Deco. Argh! I've told her that people probably just won't care that much, and its just supposed to be Art Deco inspired, I'm an artist for goodness sake, if anyone can pull off a theme I should be able to, argh! She has said she will let me know how many people ask her 'what's it all about' after the wedding, sigh.

I think it sounds great! At the end of the day, it's your wedding and you and your OH should have what you want. If people don't get it then that's their problem (although I'm sure this won't be the case!)

I have had issues with the mother lol! I think they just want it to be perfect for us and want us to look back and think WOW! I think best thing to do is let voice your opinions and let it go! At the end of the day its about you and your fiance! That's all that matters! I'm sure it will be great! Ps I love the cake topper idea! My OH would LOVE THAT!

Argh she's now mailed me to say that the cake lady will be 'disappointed' that's she's making this amazing cake and we are sticking Mario and princess peach on top of it.... Frankly I couldn't give a monkeys what the cake maker thinks, we are paying her to make a cake, not give her opinion on it, argh! I can see today being a difficult one..

Sounds familiar! My mum was grand but OH's was a nightmare! She totally didn't get the idea that it was our day and not one of her usual parties that she throws for no reason at all! She ended up going around to all our guests telling them all the things she helped us with and commenting on the things she didn't agree with! Your ideas sound lovely so stick to your guns!

Haha oh dear, I'm hoping mine won't be doing that! I'm thinking when the day is actually here, she'll forget all that stuff... I hope anyway! It was difficult enough to get her into the idea of dreaded black at a wedding, the whole funeral opinion came up, to which I told her that if our guests actually think they've accidentally stumbled into a funeral, then they ahve some serious issues! Especially given the black is the smallest part of the colour Smiley atonished

Fuhgeddaboudit! (as they say in the Bronx)

My OH's mum just DOES NOT GET our wedding. We're having a lot of non-traditional things and her mantra is very much "Why would you have that at a wedding? It's going to be more like a kid's party...", but that's what we want! I think that unless it's typical pink / lavender with chair covers and ribbon and an air of demure sophistication, etc. it doesn't classify as a wedding in her book.

Definitely go for what you want! It's something that's about you as a couple and so everyone at your wedding will love it!! I was looking at cake topper's the other day and have found one we both love (well, we love the idea of it, but want to find one that doesn't look as comical as this!) Haven't told my mum yet, though I'm sure she's going to make a comment about it not being traditional enough!!

Ignore her, your wedding, your choice.

I was telling someone that we were having cat cake toppers modeled on our own cats and that I was going to try and fit my old cats collar around my flowers as a something old. I got looked at like I was mental but I couldnt give a stuff, cats are my thing and it is my wedding. I think most people would think it was odd for a cat of some sort not to be present!!

I love that she is going to carry out a poll with the guests to see who gets it and who doesn't it! Ha! You gotta love your mum :-)

We are taking the "we don't care" attitude, if people don't like it, they are free to leave! Go with what you want and your Mum can br thankful that you're not having this cake - http://likes.com/weird/worst-wedding-cakes?utm_term=26147155&utm_campaign=ml&pid=66196&utm_source=mylikes&utm_medium=cpc&v=eyJjbGlja19pZCI6IDE3NjM0NjkyNTEsICJwb3N0X2lkIjogMjYxNDcxNTV9&page=3

My mum turned around and told me my cake topper wasnt going to go with my cake.

We are havign a four tier (bottom two same size and decorated as one) with the bottom section covered in a ruffled rose petal design, the other two teirs are plain with a ribbon around the top and a vintage brooch. The picture i have of it is in white icing. We have a Willow Tree cake topper which is natural wood shades.

No matter how many times I tell her we're having a cream cake not a white one, she wont listen!

MIL has been worse though, she is quite blatantly bitter that she hasnt seen my dress, which is purely down to the fact that every time something costs money its a bad idea, and i know for a fact her reaction will be 'its ok' but she has told me before I have the taste of a rabid dog... so why would I let her have any involvement or even a say in the wedding knowing she hates everything I like.

Ha ha - I had a big fight with my mum over the table decorations. She wanted a bunch of roses in a fish bowl. I wanted the fish bowl half full of gel beads, with a single rose head floating in it with some onion grass wrapped around the inside of the bowl. I won, and on our wedding day she admitted that my design was the best and looked simple and classy. My idea also had the advantage of being cheaper, as we only needed one flower per table, rather than the eight or nine her idea would have needed.

ETA: By the way, I don't know what's gone wrong with my ticker, but today is NOT the day! We got married on July 25th.... I had better things to do on my wedding day than post here!

I have a theory that the majority of mums think they're helping when they make comments/suggestions like this and think they're just getting involved/coming up with ideas/suggestions and don't really think that it comes across as critical. My mum on the surface seems to be against a lot of things we pick (if she had her way my wedding would look like Barbie's fairy princess ball!) but I can kind of tell it's just her way of getting involved/getting excited so I kind of like it in a weird way as I know it's her way of getting involved and showing interest. I stand firm on my choices though, but am letting her add a bit of glitz to my day ?
