Motorhomers/Campervanners

Not a motorhomer, no, but we've just debuted our caravan! When Olly started school this year, we took one look at the price of holidays in the school holidays (now that we're a slave to them) and decided a caravan was the way to go.

We had two nights in it last week for the first time and it was brilliant - so much fun. £10 a night for a pitch with electricity and showers, etc.

We have generally camped out in a tent, but this one time we went to Holland we invited my PIL along too with their caravan. The caravan came in use for us too when one night we had a months rainfall, and FIL looked out the window only to see that our tent looked like it was floating. For the next 3 nights we shared the caravan with the PIL and it was lovely....so warm and cosy.

FIL has just turned 70 and there was talk that he might not be so keen to take long driving holidays so I've been trying to drop subtle hints to H that we should see if they want to sell the caravan. ?

I'm so looking forward to it. We ummed and ahhed about a caravan as they're a lot cheaper (as you're not buying the vehicle too) but didn't want to have to buy a big car for towing and then need to use it all the time, iyswim. And somehow a motorhome is more 'jump in and go' - easier to wild camp in too. And easier to reverse ? And just appealed more. Though of course you don't have a car when you arrive.

We spent 2 weeks last August in a tent in the rain and gales, staring enviously at next door's caravan ? This year we're the posh campers ? Hurrah for not using a bucket in the middle of the night...

We have had Gertie our VW campervan for 3 years now and we go away in her all the time,even staying on friends drives when neither of us wants to drive home after a night out.

The freedom to move around is just fab

You can get the seaplane from here to balamory you know ?... i found a great campsite at glen nevis the other day while planning our holidays ?

It's not strictly a motorhome but we have an 18`ton horsebox ? the back half is for the gee gees and the front half has a living area, kitchen, bathroom and sleeps six people. We love it and it gets taken away on non horsey trips too as it is so comfortable and is great when we want to go away with a few friends. I love getting everything ready to go away it feels like you are going on a real adventure!

We spent our honeymoon budget on half of a 20 yr old Talbot 'Express' (ha ha to that) - Mum bought the other half!

We took her to the south and west of France for our honeymoon, then she went back to northern France in October. We are currently planning a trip down through France, Spain and Portugal in the summer to visit my sister in the Algarve.

I grew up with a proper old Dormobile and was determined to get a campervan as soon as we could! It lets us do much more exciting holidays than we could otherwise afford, especially when the weather's not suitable for camping, and it's so great just to be able to go anywhere. The continent especially is really great for campervans.

As I've said elsewhere to you we had such a fab time in our camper vans growing up - I'm gutted that Simon doesn't want one. We used to have spare clothes and a few tins in ours all the time so that on a Friday night if the weather forecast was rain we'd go away for the weekend - it never ever rained that I can remember!

We did Cornwall and Dorset lots in that time!

My dad's in the process of renovating a van at the moment so they still do the hols!

Not quite the same, but we had a motorhome for 5 weeks in New Zealand a few years ago and I just loved it. I really liked the freedom it gave us....we could stop on the side of the road and make a brew whenever we felt like it, and we could pitch camp when we wanted. There was definitely a sense of a nomadic lifestyle with it as opposed to the time we spent in Australia where we stayed in apartments and motels which needed prebooking.

I really liked having the flexibility to do pretty much what we wanted, and we were adventurous and explored as much as we could.

I have always liked camping though so a motorhome was a luxury as far as I was concerned. OH on the other hand was quite aghast at the idea, but got used to it, especially when he saw how great the campsites were and realised that yes, the motorhome did have a TV !!

I cant wait until my foot is a bit better as I am planning on doing lots of camping between now and when it gets too hot.

Welcome to the world of mobile homes ?

We've had our caravan for 3 years now and love it. Perfect for us as we can take the dog along too (although he lives in the awning). A couple we're close to bought a caravan at the same time so we tend to go away together - always have a laugh wind, rain or gale force winds!

We went down to Torbay last year for our main summer hols as a practice run for France this year. Lack of funds has put a stop to that this year but we'll happily tour round some of the sites we haven't yet visited in Scotland.

We've not been over the West coast of Scotland yet but give me a shout for any recs for the Highlands and East coast if you like.

Wed love a campervan, we keep saying when (or more like if at the moment) we go to NZ we are going to hire / buy one and tour the country in one.. I hired one in Asutralia and drove from Alice Springs to Uluru and I loved it

We also fancy the idea of doing Scotland in one at some point too

So we need a hitched rally then... ?

Nice pic R-A! Yes, she's just over the 3.5 tons and is 7.24m long. Yes I hope to drive her, Though H will be chief driver.

My H is currently working on a trip to Holland.

I have long wanted a small campervan but it isn't really practical as now there is only me and I'm not sure I would go away alone too much. But I envy those who have one.

You get some fab campers for one/two though - you could use it as your main car and still have a decent amount of room.

Here's our beast. Very jealous of your seperate shower Zoay, we just have a wet room - but couldn't get a van with a seperate shower and all the other things I insisted on we agreed we needed.

Yes it is a bit of a beast but the back half is for the horses so the living area is probably a similar size to yours.

H wants to take it to Brands Hatch to camp out with his friends for Superbikes weekend, we only live 2 miles away but apparently they would miss the atmosphere if they didn't stay! ?

But... 18 tons?! That's 6 times the weight of ours. Amazing.

In fact I'm very tempted to do our first 'wild camp' in a layby right by the river on a quiet road - a road 3-4 miles away we drive most days to take L to preschool ?

Now you need one of those fixed tow bar things so you cn take a small car along for when you get there!

Hopefully Zoay's isn't too big to get in and out of carparks etc so you may be ok as towing a car will up your fuel bill a bit. H is angling for some sort of small motorbike to take away with us so that he can go for supplies.

Yes, 18 tons is a bit of a monster but it can happily take 5 horses, 6 people and all the associated guff that we need to pack! H loves it as he feels like a proper trucker, I like it because it has a satelitte dish and sky and we don't have it at home!

A trial run by your river close to home might not be a bad plan as if you are nything like us you will forget to take really basic essentials, like a corkscrew! ?
