Mouth Ulcer - ouch!!

claireac, 20 August, 2009 at 14:59 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 21

When I get stressed and run down I get mouth ulcers. I have a particularly painful one at the moment, and it's driving me mad!

Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm using Bonjela Cool, but it's only temporary relief.

Thanks

    I suffer loads from ulcers.

Cold tea bags pressed on sometimes helps.

Ouch - how is it something so small can be so painful! I use Rinstead Pastilles and they seem to bring the discomfort down a bit.

Cordosyl mouthwash is really good for soothing and healing them. H gets them quite often and says this is the only thing that helps. I also use it because I have a dodgy wisdom tooth coming out and it is brilliant at soothing the inflamed area.

ETA for some reason the original one (redish label) seems to work better than the minty one (blueish label).

20!! Now that must really hurt!

Thanks for all the suggestions: I've been and bought pineapple juice and Corsodyl mouthwash (I remember my Dad using this when I was a child), I would have bought the pastilles too but couldn't find them.

Dh has very helpfully thrown my cooling down teabag in the bin ?

I always use ambersol (sp) i swear by the stuff! If i get an ulcer i'm addicted! It numbs the pain and has some stuff in it to make it better too! (get the kids one in a liquid rather than the adult gel one, i swear the kids one is better!) And apply until it's so numb you can't feel it, when you feel it again reapply! Well thats my method! I've not OD'd yet! (although my OH says i will one day!) x

Hope your ouchy mouth feels better soon x

Anbesol, its flippin marv. I have a bottle of liquid Anbesol in my handbag at the mo as I had a particularly horrible ulcer a few weeks back and a few drops of Anbesol 6 times a day got rid of it in 3 days!

I absolutely swear by placing salt directly onto the ulcer, it hurts but its worth it cos usually the next day its gone. I always do this as I am prone to ulcers, I also find that eating tomato's brings them out.

    Anbesol for me too.

I also use an antiseptic mouthwash (like Listerine) as it seems to help.

The thought of putting anything acidic like pineapple juice on them makies me shudder a bit. Ouch.

I forgot about Anbesol! Used to buy that for teething when my oldest two were little.

Bobbi - I have been eating a lot of tomatoes, but I think that's a coincidence. For me it's being stressed and run down.

Ouch that sounds painful! Possibly more of an allergic reaction I would have thought.

Just wanted to mention what has helped me - I used to get dreadful ulcers, especially when I was run down, to the point where I couldn't talk/laugh at times. I read on the internet to stop using toothpaste with sodium laurethsulphate (SLS) in it, which I did and I now get far, far fewer ulcers and they are much less severe. The only toothpaste I've found so far without SLS is Sensodyne original and mint gel.

I know that doesn't offer immediate relief and you may have tried longer term remedies, but htought it was worth mentioning.

Once when I was out with friends, I was in so much pain with an ulcer that they ordered me a brandy. I swilled it round my mouth and bloody hell, it stung but after that it was total bliss! Possibly a slightly extreme remedy though...

I sear by Adcortyl in orabase - a bizarre paste that feels v strange when you put it on as it sort of solidifies in your mouth, but if you do it overnight it really eases the ulcer and helps massively.

Aha! I remember this stuff for a crop of ulcers I had about 20 years ago, it was wonderful stuff, on prescription from the docs. Is it still prescription only? I agree its weird stuff but by God it got rid of about 5 large ulcers I had between my bottom lip and gum.

Another vote for Corsodyl - it's absolutely vile and disgusting stuff but it definitely does the trick.

Best thing is gengigel and we recommend it to all of our patients. its got a high percentage of hyaluronic acid in and its cooling and healing all in one go.

we keep a massive one for patient use in the surgery too.

Its £5.50 and available in boots. try it and see.
