New York

Hi All

I am going to New York on Saturday for five days and was wondering whether anyone had any recommendations (apart from the obvious places) - maybe eateries/shopping/free stuff to do

We have bought a pass where we can access all the usual spots etc but if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated

If you're still there on weds evening they light up the big tree at rockfeller centre ready for xmas!

Shame you'll just miss Black Friday sales - i imagine they'd be insane though so probably best avoided!

We got married in NYC in June so i'll have a hunt for our "list of things to do" and come back to you.

wrap up warm though - it looks freezing at the mo!

This was recommended to me as a 'non obvious thing', so perhaps you dont know about it. In Chelsea there's the Chelsea high line, it's a disused railway that goes bridge height around the area. But it's now a high walkway thats been decked and is a long garden, was very nice in summer. Different areas had drinking stations, sun loungers, amongst the garden bushes. Except all high up. Can't say how it'll be in winter though, but it'll still be open as it's a walkway above the roads.

And Greenwich village is nice, stopped for a cupcake from Magnolia bakery before wandering to the Friends building. But that is perhaps veering towards the obvious!

We went to The View revolving restaurant and it's lovely. I had probably the best steak of my life in there and of course there are gorgeous views of the city. It's fairly pricey but nice as a treat.

Not sure if the Highline is supposed to be that great in winter

Go Ice Skating at Rockefeller (if you can afford it)

Go to Top of the Rock (Rockefeller) about 30minutes before sunset (you can pre-book), so you see the it in daylight, dusk and stay up there watching all the nights come on in Manhattan (I haven't done this, but I bought it for my best friend who honeymooned in NYC and her husband said it was the best part of their trip)

Go to Brooklyn, visit Grimaldi's for pizza and Janes Carousel on the waterfront (check opening times for winter), find Washington Street/Water street - you can see the ESB framed through one of the arches of the bridge, walk back across Brooklyn Bridge - wrap up warm!

Wander round Greenwich and Soho - visit the Friends building and Ghostbusters firehouse

Have lunch at Katz deli (Harry Met Sally) - it's a bit scary when you go in cos it's really busy, but their Pastrami on Rye is sensational - share unless you have ENORMOUS appetites

    Go see a show

    Natural History Museum

Central Park - it's much bigger than you expect, we've been 3 times and still haven't seen 50% of it.

Greys Papaya hotdogs are lovely and cheap for a quick pitstop

Avoid the "diamond district" -47th street between 5th and 6th - only time I've felt scared in NYC

ENJOY!! as you can tell I'm in love with this city

We did the high line in winter, it was a beautiful sunny, crisp December morning and was a lovely walk.
